Chapter Two – Under the Moonlight

377 Words
That night, sleep refused to come. Stacy lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling as the pale glow of the moon filtered through her window. The room was quiet, yet her heart was loud, beating with memories she had tried so hard to forget. Andrew was back. She turned to her side, pulling the blanket closer, but it did nothing to calm her thoughts. Her mind drifted back to a time when the moon had meant something different, when it had been a witness to her happiest moments. She remembered that night. The cool breeze. The quiet laughter. The way the moonlight had wrapped around them like a secret meant only for two hearts. Andrew had stood beside her then, not confident and distant like today, but gentle and real. “I like the night,” he had said softly. “It feels honest.” She had smiled, not knowing how deeply those words would later haunt her. A soft knock pulled Stacy out of her thoughts. “Stacy?” Lydia’s voice came from the door. “Are you awake?” Stacy sat up slowly. “Yeah.” Lydia entered the room and sat beside her. “I knew it,” she said quietly. “Seeing him today shook you.” Stacy hesitated, then nodded. “I thought I was over it,” she whispered. “But seeing him felt like reopening a wound I never let heal.” Lydia reached for her hand. “You do not have to face this alone.” Stacy looked toward the window again. The moon was brighter now, hanging high in the sky, just like it had that night. “I loved him,” she admitted softly. “And he left without saying goodbye.” Silence filled the room, heavy but comforting. Elsewhere, Andrew stood by his window, staring at the same moon. His shades were gone, his confidence stripped away by the quiet of the night. The memories hit him just as hard. Stacy’s smile. Her laughter. Her trust. “I should have stayed,” he murmured to himself. The moon watched them both, two hearts separated by distance, time, and unspoken truths. And as the night grew deeper, one thing became clear. Their story was not over.
