My phone rang the same second Zalden's cold voice cut through the room. I didn't even glance at him, one look at the caller ID and my chest squeezed so tight that I couldn't breathe.
My hands trembled lightly as I picked up my phone. Tomorrow was the scheduled day for Jamie's surgery. Why was the hospital calling me now?
“Ms. Anderson?” The nurse's shaky voice rang in my ear. I inhaled a deep breath, waiting for her to continue. “I'm sorry but we need you to come to the hospital right away,” she said.
“Is Jamie okay?” I asked in a heartbeat, and I didn't miss the way Zalden's body tensed from the corner of my eyes.
“She needs an emergency surgery and we can't proceed without your consent.”
