CHAPTER 4: The Room That Never Existed

923 Words
The key rested in Alessia’s palm. Small. Old. Almost meaningless. Yet somehow, it felt heavier than anything she had ever held. Because it was not just a key. It was a message from a father who had disappeared. A father she had spent years trying to understand. A father whose final secret had led her back to the man she once loved. “The room your father told everyone never existed.” The old man’s words echoed in her mind. Alessia looked toward the upper floors of Grand Hotel Vittoria. The hotel had always been famous for its beauty. The elegant halls. The breathtaking views. The luxurious rooms overlooking Lake Como. But now she wondered what else had been hidden behind those walls. “Who are you?” Lorenzo’s voice brought her attention back. The elderly man looked at him. “My name is Enzo Bellini.” Alessia noticed Lorenzo’s expression change. “Bellini?” The man nodded. “My family served both the Contis and Morettis for many years.” Another connection. Another hidden thread. It was becoming impossible to believe these families had ever truly been strangers. “You worked for my father?” Alessia stepped closer. Enzo looked at her with sadness. “Yes.” “Then why didn’t you tell me anything?” The question carried years of pain. The old man lowered his eyes. “Because your father asked me not to.” Alessia’s expression hardened. “Everyone keeps saying that.” Her voice trembled. “Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.” A pause. “But nobody asked me if I wanted to be protected.” Lorenzo looked at her. He understood. Because he had spent his entire life surrounded by people making decisions for him. His father. The company. The family name. Everyone had believed they knew what was best. Enzo sighed. “Your father was afraid.” “Of what?” “The truth.” Alessia frowned. “What truth?” The old man looked around the hotel. “The truth that could destroy both families.” Before Alessia could ask another question, Enzo handed her a small envelope. “This was also from your father.” She stared at it. “Another letter?” “No.” Enzo shook his head. “A warning.” She opened it. Inside was a single sentence. The room is not where the secret is hidden. The room is where the person who knows the secret is hiding. A chill moved through her. “What does that mean?” Nobody answered. Because they all understood. The room wasn’t just a place. It was connected to someone. Someone who knew the truth. Lorenzo looked toward the upper floors. “How many rooms does this hotel have?” Enzo answered quietly. “Two hundred and fourteen.” “That doesn’t help.” The old man looked at him. “Two hundred and fifteen.” A silence followed. “One room was removed from the official records.” That evening, Lorenzo accessed the hotel’s original architectural plans. Alessia stood beside him as they examined the documents. “There.” She pointed. A small space between two rooms. “That shouldn’t be there.” Lorenzo looked closer. “A hidden room.” Exactly. They searched the fourth floor. Behind an old painting, they found the entrance. A small keyhole. Alessia’s hand tightened around the key. She inserted it. It fit. The lock turned. The door opened slowly. Dust filled the air. The room was untouched. Not abandoned. Preserved. As if someone had left yesterday and expected to return. Inside was a desk. A bookshelf. A small table. And dozens of documents. Lorenzo walked toward them. “This is impossible.” Alessia looked at him. “What?” He picked up an old file. “The Moretti family records.” She stared. “What are they doing here?” He opened another. “Conti family records.” Her heart sank. The room contained both families’ secrets. Then Alessia saw something on the desk. A photograph. She picked it up. This time, she recognized everyone. Her father. Lorenzo’s father. Her mother. And one more person. A younger version of someone she knew. Someone still alive. “Lorenzo.” Something in her voice made him turn. He walked toward her. When he saw the photograph, his expression changed. “Who is that?” Alessia pointed. The person standing beside their parents. The person holding the original hotel documents. The person who appeared to know everything from the beginning. Lorenzo whispered the name. “No.” Alessia looked at him. “You know him?” His face became pale. “Everyone in my family knows him.” “Who is he?” Lorenzo stared at the photograph. “The man who taught me everything about this hotel.” A pause. “The man my father trusted more than anyone.” Alessia waited. Then Lorenzo said: “Marco Rinaldi.” The same man who had recommended her for the restoration project. The same man who had helped them access the archives. The same man who had acted like he was searching for the truth alongside them. A message appeared on Lorenzo’s phone. Unknown number. One sentence. Stop looking where your fathers hid the truth. A second message arrived. Start looking at the people who inherited it. Alessia looked at Lorenzo. For the first time, they both understood. The past was not finished haunting them. It was alive. And it had been standing beside them all along.
