Eira had felt it all day—a faint pulse of energy that thrummed beneath her skin, like an electric current just waiting to spark. Ever since her strange conversation with Finn, something had shifted inside her. There was a pressure building, and it made her anxious, restless, as though something was about to happen but she didn’t know when.
By evening, the academy was quiet, the usual hum of activity having faded as students retreated to their dorms. But Eira couldn’t sleep. Not tonight. There were too many questions swirling in her mind, too many pieces of a puzzle that she couldn’t yet put together.
She lay in her bed, staring up at the dark ceiling, her thoughts racing. The memory of her conversation with Finn echoed in her mind. "You’re not powerless... There’s something inside you." His words had left her shaken, and now, more than ever, she felt like she was standing on the edge of something unknown.
But what?
A soft knock at the door startled her out of her thoughts. Eira sat up, her heart racing. Who would be coming to her dorm this late?
She slipped out of bed, her feet silent against the cool floor as she crossed the room. When she opened the door, she was greeted by the sight of Seren, her face pale and tense.
"We need to talk," Seren whispered urgently.
Eira nodded, stepping aside to let her friend in. Seren looked more agitated than usual, her amber eyes sharp with worry.
"What’s wrong?" Eira asked, closing the door behind her.
Seren turned to face her, her expression serious. "There’s something going on, Eira. I’ve been hearing things. Kids talking. Rumors about what’s happening to the students who disappear."
Eira felt a chill run down her spine. "What do you mean?"
"I heard a group of kids talking earlier," Seren explained, lowering her voice. "They were saying that Lucan didn’t just disappear. He was taken. And it’s not just him—there are others. Kids who’ve been sent to... some kind of facility under the academy. They’re experimenting on them, pushing their powers to the limit."
Eira’s heart pounded in her chest. She had suspected as much ever since Finn had told her about the academy’s hidden agenda, but hearing it confirmed like this made it all too real.
"Experiments..." Eira’s voice trailed off. "What are they trying to do?"
Seren shook her head. "I don’t know. But I think it has something to do with those stones."
Eira froze. The stones. She had seen them in her dreams—glowing, pulsing with energy. Finn had never mentioned the stones to her, but she had felt their presence, deep inside the dark recesses of her mind.
"What stones?" Eira asked, her voice barely a whisper.
"I don’t know exactly," Seren admitted, her eyes narrowing. "But some kids say there are stones buried deep beneath the academy. Stones that came from... the apocalypse. They’re using them to test the limits of the kids’ powers. To see what happens when they push them too far."
Eira’s breath caught in her throat. The apocalypse. The very event that had torn the world apart and left it in ruins. Was that where the powers had come from? Was that why the academy was so desperate to unlock whatever it was hiding?
"What do we do?" Eira asked, her voice trembling.
Seren hesitated, her expression torn. "I don’t know. But I think we need to find out what’s really going on. We need to get inside that facility and see for ourselves."
Eira’s stomach twisted with fear. The idea of sneaking into the heart of the academy’s secret experiments made her feel sick, but at the same time, she knew that Seren was right. They couldn’t just sit by and do nothing. Not when their friends—kids like Lucan—were being used as pawns in some twisted game.
"We could get caught," Eira warned. "If they find us, they’ll—"
"I know," Seren interrupted, her voice firm. "But we can’t keep living in the dark, Eira. We need to know the truth."
Eira nodded, though her heart still pounded with anxiety. She couldn’t deny it anymore—there was something bigger happening here, and somehow, she was connected to it. The only question was how far she was willing to go to find out the answers.

Later That Night:
The halls of the academy were eerily silent as Eira and Seren made their way through the shadows. They moved quickly, their footsteps barely making a sound on the polished floors as they approached the restricted wing of the building—the area where the laboratory was rumored to be hidden.
Eira’s pulse quickened with every step. Her senses were heightened, the faint thrumming energy inside her growing stronger the closer they got to the lab. She didn’t know why, but something about this place made her feel like she was on the verge of unlocking something—something she wasn’t ready to face.
Seren led the way, her movements quick and confident. She had always been the brave one, the one who didn’t hesitate to act when it came to standing up for what was right. Eira admired that about her, but tonight, she wasn’t sure if they were being brave or reckless.
As they reached the end of the hallway, Seren stopped, glancing around to make sure no one was watching. The door in front of them was marked with a red sign: Authorized Personnel Only.
"This is it," Seren whispered. "The lab’s supposed to be down there."
Eira swallowed hard, her mouth dry with nerves. "Are you sure about this?"
Seren glanced at her, her expression serious. "We need to know what they’re doing to the kids, Eira. If we don’t, we could be next."
Eira took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. Seren was right. They couldn’t let fear stop them now. They had to find out the truth.
Together, they slipped through the door and into the dark corridor beyond.

The Lab:
The further they went, the colder the air became. The sterile scent of antiseptic filled Eira’s nose, and the faint hum of machinery echoed through the narrow hallways. It felt like they were descending into the heart of something twisted, something hidden and dangerous.
As they approached the main lab, they saw it—a room encased in glass, with metal tables, machines, and monitors lining the walls. And in the center of it all, a figure lay strapped to one of the tables.
Lucan.
Eira’s heart lurched in her chest as she saw him, his body motionless, his eyes closed. Electrodes were attached to his head, wires snaking down to the machines that pulsed faintly beside him.
"Oh my God," Seren whispered, her voice shaking. "They’re... experimenting on him."
Eira could barely breathe. The sight of Lucan, one of the most powerful students at the academy, lying there like a test subject made her feel sick to her stomach.
But it wasn’t just Lucan.
In the rooms surrounding the main lab, other children were strapped to similar tables, their faces pale, their bodies trembling as the machines hummed and pulsed with energy. They were being tested, pushed to their limits—just like Finn had warned her.
Eira felt a surge of anger rise up inside her. How could the academy do this? How could they treat these kids like lab rats, like they were nothing more than experiments to be prodded and poked until they broke?
"We need to get him out of here," Eira whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "We can’t leave him like this."
Seren nodded, her face pale with fear but determined. "We need to figure out how to shut it all down."
But before they could move, the sound of footsteps echoed down the corridor.
"Someone’s coming," Seren whispered urgently, her eyes wide with panic. "We need to hide!"
Without thinking, Eira grabbed Seren’s arm and pulled her toward the nearest door, slipping inside just as the footsteps grew louder. They crouched down behind a row of shelves, their hearts pounding as they listened.
The door to the lab opened with a soft hiss, and two figures stepped inside. Eira held her breath, her pulse racing as she peered through the crack between the shelves.
It was Finn—and one of the lead scientists.
