Crossing Paths with a Powerful Figure

712 Words
In the hotel suite, the lights were dim and tinged with an ambiguous warmth. Wen Man stumbled into a passionate embrace with a handsome stranger. Earlier that evening, her ex-boyfriend, Gu Changqing, had announced his engagement. Overwhelmed by heartbreak, she drowned herself in alcohol at a bar. Seduced by booze and the allure of male charm, Wen Man followed this man to his room. If Gu Changqing could so easily discard their four-year relationship for the daughter of a wealthy family, then she was entitled to indulge herself too. Just as things were about to escalate… Wen Man leaned against the man’s shoulder, losing herself in the moment, murmuring the name like a kitten: “Gu Changqing!” All intimacy came to an abrupt halt. A soft click sounded, and the lights brightened… The harsh light revealed the man’s face. Huo Shaoting, the top lawyer in the country, known as the "King of Hell" in legal circles. His assets were countless, making him the epitome of an urban elite. But what mattered most was his other significant identity—he was Gu Changqing’s brother-in-law, the cheating scumbag who broke her heart. Wen Man sobered up instantly. She closed her eyes briefly, inwardly cursing herself: Damn it! She almost slept with the brother of her former rival! Huo Shaoting released her. Leaning against the wall, he lit a cigarette and scrutinized her from head to toe, his expression amused. “How interesting… Miss Wen.” He flicked the ash off his cigarette casually, his tone teasing but nonchalant. “What were you thinking when you kissed me? Did you want to sleep with me just to spite Gu Changqing?” Clearly, Huo Shaoting recognized her. There was no way for Wen Man to pretend otherwise. Huo Shaoting was far too famous; claiming ignorance would have been absurd, even if she truly hadn’t realized who he was earlier due to her drunken state. She knew better than to offend such a powerful figure, so all she could do was bow her head and apologize. “I’m sorry, Mr. Huo. I drank too much.” Huo Shaoting didn’t press the matter. After finishing his cigarette, he straightened up and tossed her his coat. “Put this on. I’ll take you home.” Without being overly polite, Wen Man accepted it with a soft thank-you. Huo Shaoting drove a Bentley Continental. Neither of them spoke during the ride. Occasionally, Wen Man stole glances at him. His profile was flawless, his features sharply defined. The shirt he wore bore no visible brand logo, yet it exuded luxury. Wen Man guessed that a man like him wouldn’t lack female companionship. When they arrived, Huo Shaoting turned slightly toward her. His gaze lingered on her long, pale legs before he reached into the glove compartment and handed her a business card. The implications behind such actions were clear enough without needing further explanation. Wen Man never expected him to still want anything to do with her after her identity was revealed. While Huo Shaoting was undeniably charming, and a fling with him might be exciting, the mere thought of his connection to Gu Changqing made her scalp tingle. After hesitating for a moment, she declined. “Mr. Huo, I think it’s best if we don’t stay in touch.” Huo Shaoting didn’t seem particularly bothered. Though Wen Man was beautiful, he wasn’t the type to force himself on anyone. He took back the card and nodded gracefully, saying, “You’re right. Someone like you is better suited to being a virtuous woman.” Wen Man felt a twinge of embarrassment, but Huo Shaoting remained gentlemanly, stepping out of the car to open the door for her, acting as though nothing had happened between them. The golden Bentley slowly drove away. A gust of night wind swept past, sending chills through Wen Man’s body. Only then did she realize she’d forgotten to return his coat. As she hesitated whether to chase after him, her phone rang. It was Aunt Ruan from home, her voice urgent and trembling with tears. “Wen Man, hurry back! Something terrible has happened at home!” Wen Man asked anxiously, but Aunt Ruan couldn’t explain clearly over the phone, only urging her to return quickly.
