The girl was beautiful and she had an enchanting scent that carried on the fall breeze. It was a beautiful day and it almost reminded me of my homeland. I sipped my coffee and watched the girl preen.
She was a vain little thing and that was attractive in a mate. Frowning, something about calling her mate seemed wrong though. My grandmother said that I would find my mate in the United States and she gave me a location in Pennsylvania.
I may have finally found her, yet my fox was being particular. He liked her smell but he scented that it wasn’t truly her scent that was confusing me. Sighing again I watched her and the older woman who looked like her.
I could see the faint shimmer of her aura and it looked like there was something missing. Chewing my lip I scrolled through my phone; she was some small-time model but she had a huge following on social media.
I could feel her eyes on me, I winked at her and she blushed. I could enjoy a well-dressed woman and she was definitely well-dressed. I decided I needed to explore why she smelled like my mate.
My fox kept yelling at me that it was the wrong girl, but my nose was telling me that the fox didn’t know what he was talking about. I hated the fact that I was just going to be some sort of weird stalker but I didn’t want to approach her yet.
I followed her around for what felt like hours following her from store to store I was hungry and wanted to grab a late lunch. I tapped into what Tonya liked to call my Jedi mind powers, I sent a gentle subliminal message for her to go to Barley Creek.
I left her to pay for her purchases and ran a hand through my hair, maybe the fox was right and she wasn’t my mate. Marie struck me as very high maintenance and even though I loved my designer labels as well, I preferred to relax in the woods in flannels and jeans.
Or even naked, I loved to feel the wind on my skin and the sun beating down on me. I was restless among all this concrete and glass. I felt the pull toward the mountains and when I was done here, I was going to let my fox run and hunt.
The pub made my skin crawl and my fox nervous, we both hated crowded noisy places and even though it was early in the day it was crowded and noisy. The food smelled wonderful though.
I sat at the bar and ordered a whisky neat, I knew she would show up and I wanted to be the first thing she saw when she walked in the door. I could smell her before she even walked in. The scent was stronger but it still did not seem to be hers.
I tried not to snicker when she nearly tripped over the threshold when she saw me. I knew she found me attractive, it was obvious in the way her eyes trailed me and the way her smell changed to that of arousal.
I took another sip of my drink and decided it was time to make my move, whisky in hand I swaggered over and she tried to pick her tongue off the floor, I loved when I had that effect on women.
Time to lay on the brogue her mom was nudging her and she composed herself. I had to be careful with the charm because it could start fights and cause women to fall on my feet.
“Ladies, I’m visiting the area and I am kind of lonely would ye like to join me for lunch?” I could see the spell settle over her. They were going to be putty in my hands. She nearly swooned when I started talking.
“Why thank you, I am Marie Blackwell and this is my mother, Florence. A pleasure to meet you, mister?” She extended her hand and the giddy anticipation I was waiting for a spark of recognition that would come with meeting my mate.
I grabbed her hand and waited for the spark, I tried not to let the disappointment show on my face but I was utterly confused. She smelled like my mate but there was no recognition and I could see she was disappointed as well.
Odd, she didn’t seem like a shifter, maybe she just hoped that we were compatible. I wouldn’t mind a romp in the hay with her but my fox was fickle and he knew that we were close and if she scented another woman on us, she would hate us.
“Gideon O’Connor the pleasure is all mine.” I turned to the hostess and asked her for a table. Lust swirled around her and I could tell she wanted to see what I was packing under my suit. Jealousy flared behind me and I glanced at Marie.
She had her eyes narrowed as the hostess led us to a back booth. We ordered drinks and appetizers. I raised an eyebrow as the older woman was scrutinizing me. She seemed to know I was something more than human.
How odd, there was something off about her as well but I could not put my finger on it. We continued to sit there and talk. The drinks were flowing and I had to admit my head was feeling a little foggy from all the drinks.
I saw Marie grab her phone and I realized we had been drinking for the past hour and a half. Her eyes were glazed and she was giggly, her mom was even more sharp-eyed and staring at me.
“Do ye need a ride home beautiful? I could have my driver take us.” I knew if I stuck with her, I might actually find my mate. Her mother was on high alert now, which was odd, I had no ill intentions toward them but she was acting as if I were the enemy.
“That isn’t necessary Mr. O’Connor, we can hire someone to pick us up.” I raised an eyebrow at the woman, she suddenly shifted into mama bear mode. How odd. Marie seemed to be just as confused as I was.
“Tis not a problem to be the knight that saves two beautiful women.” I texted my driver to let him know that I was ready to leave.
“That would be wonderful Gideon.” She fluttered her lashes at me again and I helped her and her mother out of the booth. The sky had darkened and the wind had picked up. I scented the air and the hairs on the back of my neck prickled.
Something was amiss and I wasn’t sure what it was though but I am beginning to think that giving Marie Blackwell a ride home was a bad idea.
