Chapter 6: Cracks and Conversations

1160 Words
The week after the accidental date, Sarah’s head was a mix of caffeine overload and nerves. The Saturday brunch rush had felt surreal, like something out of a half-remembered dream. Dr. Vance—no, Ethan, she corrected herself, the name now tinged with the familiarity of that unintentional camaraderie—had thrown her into a world that seemed oddly… soft. A world where walls, even the strongest ones she’d built for years, started to feel less necessary. When he’d offered to help behind the counter, Sarah’s instincts had screamed at her to say no, to assert her boundaries, to maintain the professional distance she had carefully cultivated. But she didn’t. She’d let him. And it had been… nice. Surreal. But nice. He wasn’t just some doctor now—he was Ethan, someone who’d offered kindness without expecting anything in return. And for once, it wasn’t overwhelming. It was... comforting. And then, of course, there was Leo, who was now convinced that Ethan wasn’t just a friendly neighbor, but the hero of every colorful, crayon-drenched world Leo could imagine. Each day, his drawings grew more elaborate, each one more fantastical than the last. Rex was always there, of course, wielding his mighty plastic sword to fend off enemies or save princesses (who always looked suspiciously like Sarah). The other day, Leo had rushed up to Sarah with a new masterpiece, thrusting it in front of her. “Look, Mommy! Dr. Ethan is saving the whole town! And Rex is helping!” he beamed, proud as could be. Sarah took the drawing with a forced smile, her heart twisting. It wasn’t just the depiction of Ethan rescuing her in some childlike, fantastical way—it was the fact that Leo believed it. He believed in this warm, steady, capable figure who’d come into their lives so unexpectedly. She had no idea how she felt about it. About him. She’d tried to keep things simple, professional, but there were cracks now. Little ones, at first. Just enough to notice. One morning, when the café was quieter, Ethan walked in, dressed in his usual understated manner—perfectly pressed slacks, the deep navy blue of his sweater seeming to make his eyes stand out more. He nodded at her as he approached, giving her that small, soft smile that always made her stomach flip, even if she hated to admit it. “Manager Walker,” he greeted with a tilt of his head. “How’s the coffee today? No croissant catastrophes, I hope?” Sarah forced a small chuckle, her hands slightly trembling as she set down the coffee cup she was preparing. “Nothing that a little espresso can’t fix,” she replied lightly, though she was aware of how her voice wavered ever so slightly. Ethan’s gaze softened. “Good to hear,” he said, his eyes lingering on her for a moment longer than necessary, his usual composed demeanor just slightly giving way to something warmer, more personal. Just as Sarah opened her mouth to speak, Chloe walked in, her usual cheer and pink hair bouncing with every step. She gave Sarah a knowing look, then greeted Ethan with her trademark flair. “Well, well, look who’s gracing us with his presence! The hero of the hour.” Ethan chuckled, running a hand through his hair. “I suppose I’m in good company then,” he replied, offering a small grin that made Sarah feel even more disoriented. “You know,” Chloe continued, not missing a beat, “Leo’s got quite the collection of artwork for you. You’re practically famous around here.” Ethan raised an eyebrow, his expression amused. “I can’t say I mind the fame.” Sarah couldn’t help but smile at the exchange, though a strange, almost bashful feeling crept up her neck. She hadn’t expected the dynamic between Ethan and Leo to become so… comfortable, so fast. And yet, here they were, laughing together, sharing in something that wasn’t forced or awkward—it was just… easy. But it wasn’t easy for Sarah. She could feel the walls she’d so carefully built inching lower, one layer at a time. The reality was starting to settle in: she was seeing him more. She was wanting to see him more. And for someone like Sarah, that was dangerous territory. A couple of minutes passed before Ethan cleared his throat, glancing back at Sarah. “Actually,” he began, his voice quieter now, “I was wondering if you’d have some time this afternoon. There’s a new exhibit downtown—a photography show I thought you might enjoy. It’s... not too far from here.” The way he asked—casual, yet with an almost thoughtful hesitation—made Sarah’s heart stutter in her chest. He was asking her out. Not in a grand, sweeping gesture. Not in a way that felt overbearing or too forward. Just an invitation. A quiet suggestion. But Sarah hesitated. She knew where this could lead. Where it would lead, if she wasn’t careful. “I… I don’t know, Ethan,” she found herself saying, the words slipping out before she could stop them. “I’m not sure I have time today.” Ethan didn’t press. He just nodded, his expression unreadable. “Of course,” he replied, his tone gentle. “Maybe another time.” For a moment, they just stood there, the quiet between them stretching a little longer than either of them expected. Sarah could feel the weight of the moment, her thoughts racing, her breath a little too shallow. Then, just as quickly as it had appeared, the moment passed. Chloe had already turned her attention back to a new customer, and Ethan gave Sarah a small, understanding smile before turning toward the door. “Take care, Manager Walker,” he said, his voice soft but warm, like a promise. As the door closed behind him, Sarah exhaled a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. The rush of feelings—confusion, longing, fear—swirled inside her, threatening to overtake her in a way she wasn’t prepared for. Leo, who had been quietly watching the interaction from his corner of the café, looked up at her with his big, innocent eyes. “Mommy,” he said, his voice thoughtful, “Dr. Ethan likes you a lot. He’s nice.” Sarah managed a smile, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “I know, sweetheart,” she murmured, her heart tightening. But the truth was, she wasn’t sure what to do with all the nice things Ethan was offering her. She wasn’t sure how to handle the feelings he was stirring inside her, or what it would mean for her and Leo. She wasn’t even sure she was ready to find out. For now, all she could do was keep moving forward. One step at a time. And hope she wasn’t walking into something that would change everything.
