Chapter 9: Subtle Security Measures and Growing Curiosity

1319 Words
The days after the incident at the café left Sarah shaken, though she tried not to show it. Her ex-husband’s sudden appearance had rattled her, but what unsettled her more was Ethan’s quiet but commanding intervention. He hadn’t been aggressive, hadn’t raised his voice—just calm, controlled authority. She wasn’t used to men like that. She wasn’t used to feeling safe. Despite the lingering tension in her chest, life at the café moved forward. Customers came and went, Chloe’s pink hair was as vibrant as ever as she worked the espresso machine, and Leo handled the register with his usual easygoing charm. On the surface, everything was normal. But Sarah could feel a weight—one she hadn’t realized was there before. The air around her felt a little thicker, the little things standing out more than usual. But then she started noticing changes. It began with the lights. One evening, as she locked up the café, she turned toward the parking lot and noticed how different it looked. Where before there had been dark patches and long shadows stretching across the pavement, there was now bright, clear lighting. It illuminated the entire lot, leaving no place for anyone to hide. She stood there for a moment, staring at the lights, an unsettling thought creeping in: That wasn’t there before. She frowned, glancing around, but there was no one in sight. Maybe Kenji had requested it. But if he had, wouldn’t he have mentioned it to her? He wasn’t one to make decisions without consulting her, especially when it came to the café. She’d always handled the little things like that. It didn’t add up. The next morning, as she arrived to open the shop, she saw a man on a ladder near the entrance, adjusting a security camera. The sight of it, combined with the new lights, sent a jolt of unease through her. "Morning," she greeted cautiously, trying to mask the flicker of suspicion in her voice. The man glanced down, offering a polite nod. "Just finishing some upgrades. Should be all set in a few minutes." "Upgrades?" Sarah repeated, trying to keep her tone neutral. She folded her arms, eyes narrowing slightly as she watched him tighten a screw on the camera. "New cameras, better angles. Just a routine security check," he explained with a smile that seemed too polite. Sarah hesitated, watching him for a beat longer. She hadn’t requested any upgrades. So why were they being done? Maybe Kenji had—he had been worried about her after the incident with her ex. But again, why wouldn’t he tell her? And why was this being done without any prior discussion? "Okay…" she muttered under her breath, still not entirely convinced, and walked inside, the small knot of suspicion tightening in her stomach. The morning rush was in full swing by the time she made her way behind the counter. Chloe was working her usual magic with the espresso machine, her pink hair tied up in a messy bun, and Leo was at the register, chatting with a regular. "Hey, boss," Chloe called out, her eyes bright. "Want your usual?" "Please," Sarah replied distractedly, still thinking about the security changes. As Chloe got to work on Sarah’s coffee, Sarah stepped away from the counter to watch the café for a moment. The bustle of the place was comforting, but the changes around her were gnawing at her. "So, uh… about the whole ex-husband thing," Chloe began, glancing up from the steaming milk. "How are you holding up?" Sarah sighed, leaning against the counter as she rubbed her forehead. "I’m fine." Chloe set the milk aside, her expression softening. "Are you, though?" Sarah hesitated, her mind running in a dozen directions. "No. But I will be." Chloe nodded knowingly, her smile tinged with sympathy. "You know, I saw Dr. Vance looking like he was ready to intervene even before Kenji got here. He’s got that whole quiet protector vibe going on." Sarah glanced at the door as if expecting Ethan to walk in at any moment. "Yeah," she murmured. "He does." Later that afternoon, needing some space from the constant hum of the café, Sarah stepped outside to get some fresh air. The cool breeze was a welcome relief, but as she crossed the threshold, she noticed something that made her pause. Mr. Ramos, the owner of the convenience store next door, was standing outside his shop. He wasn’t just watching the street—he was scanning it, his eyes darting across the area as if searching for something. She’d known Mr. Ramos for years. He was friendly, usually up for a chat, and never seemed to pay much attention to the traffic in front of his store. But today? He was more vigilant than usual. "Hey, Mr. Ramos," Sarah greeted, walking over to him with a small smile. He turned to her, his friendly expression immediately returning. "Sarah! How’s the café?" "Busy as always," she said, but then her curiosity got the better of her. "Have you noticed any new security updates around here?" Mr. Ramos nodded, scratching his chin. "Oh, yeah. The building owner’s been making a few changes. Said it was just routine maintenance, but it’s good, right? Keeps things safer." Sarah’s eyebrows lifted. "The building owner?" she asked, her voice casual but her mind racing. "I’ve never met him," Mr. Ramos continued, scratching his neck as he glanced down the street. "Someone from his management team came by, but I think he’s been around. Seems like he keeps a close eye on things, though." Sarah hummed thoughtfully. Someone from his team? That didn’t add up either. The building owner had never been around before, at least not in a way that she would’ve noticed. This felt different—felt deliberate. She excused herself and went back inside. Ethan was sitting at his usual corner table, a medical journal open in front of him, but his attention was on her as soon as she walked in. "You’ve been stopping by a lot lately," she said as she pulled up a chair across from him. He glanced up, the corners of his mouth tilting into a small smile. "The coffee’s good." Sarah raised an eyebrow. "Right. That’s the only reason." Ethan set his journal down. "Something on your mind?" She leaned back in her chair, folding her arms. "You wouldn’t happen to know anything about the sudden security upgrades around here, would you?" He didn’t flinch, didn’t look guilty—he simply met her gaze, and after a beat, replied, "Routine maintenance. The building owner likes to keep things in order." "Uh-huh." Sarah studied him, her suspicion still lingering. "And does the building owner always personally ensure tenant safety?" Ethan held her gaze steadily, and for a fleeting moment, she thought she saw something in his eyes—something unreadable. Then, with a subtle tilt of his head, he said, "It’s good business to keep tenants secure. And after what happened the other day, it seemed like the right time for a few improvements." Sarah exhaled slowly. So he wasn’t denying it. "You’re full of surprises, Dr. Vance," she murmured. Ethan took a slow sip of his coffee, the faintest smile curving his lips. "I try." As she made her way back to the counter, Chloe nudged her with a playful smirk. "Sooo… what’s going on with you and Dr. Tall, Dark, and Mysterious?" Sarah shot her a look. "Nothing." Chloe raised an eyebrow. "Right. Because most men just secretly upgrade security systems for the women they have no interest in." Sarah rolled her eyes, though a flutter of discomfort stirred in her stomach. She hated that Chloe had a point. Still, she wasn’t about to go down that road—not yet. Too much baggage. Too many complications. And yet… She found herself glancing toward Ethan again. Her stomach flipped. And wondering.
