CHAPTER 3: More to that which meets the eye

569 Words
Marissa wasn’t a suspicious person by nature. But she was observant. And observation, she had learned, often revealed what words tried to hide. It started with small things. Adrian’s phone always face down. His tone slightly distracted. His presence there, but not fully. And then The message. “Tomorrow. Same time.” No name. No context. Just certainty. Marissa stared at the screen for a long moment, her heartbeat steady but heavy. She didn’t confront him. Didn’t ask questions. Instead She put the phone down. And began to think. The next morning, Marissa smiled. She made breakfast. Spoke normally. Played her role perfectly. Because whatever this was She wasn’t going to approach it blindly. After Adrian left, she sat alone at the table, her fingers lightly tracing the edge of her cup. Then she reached for her phone. Dialed a number. “Hi,” she said calmly. “I need to find out something… discreetly.” A pause. “Yes. It’s about my husband.” Her tone didn’t change. Didn’t break. But something in her eyes did. Something quiet. Something dangerous. Because while Adrian thought he was managing a secret Marissa had just decided to Adrian had always trusted patterns. Schedules. Order. Predictability. That was how he controlled everything. But now Something felt off. It wasn’t obvious. Not something he could point to. Just a quiet shift beneath the surface, like a crack forming in glass before it shatters. That afternoon, he walked into his office and paused. Lena’s desk was immaculate, as always. Too immaculate. Her bag sat slightly open. For a moment, he hesitated. Then stepped closer. Inside A metallic case. Compact. Polished. Unfamiliar. His fingers hovered over it “Looking for something?” Her voice came from behind him. Adrian turned sharply. Lena stood at the door, her expression calm but her eyes sharper than usual. “I was just” “Curious?” she finished, stepping inside. She walked past him, closing her bag with quiet precision. “You shouldn’t be.” Something in her tone made him pause. Not defensive. Not nervous. Certain. And that certainty Made the crack inside him widen. Marissa didn’t rush. She waited. Watched. Learned. By the third day, she knew Adrian’s new rhythm better than he did. That night, she followed him. Not too close. Not too far. Just enough. The city lights blurred as she drove, her focus steady, her breathing controlled. Adrian didn’t go to a restaurant. Didn’t meet friends. Didn’t even pretend to go anywhere else. He went straight to the office. And stayed. Marissa parked across the street, her eyes fixed on the building. Minutes passed. Then an hour. Then A second silhouette appeared behind the glass. Close to his. Too close. Marissa’s grip tightened around the steering wheel. But her face Remained calm. Because now She knew. The next morning felt normal. Too normal. Adrian kissed Marissa goodbye, just like always. “See you tonight,” he said. She smiled. “Of course.” Their eyes met for a brief moment. And something unspoken passed between them. He looked away first. Later that day Marissa walked into his office. Unannounced. Uninvited. The receptionist hesitated. “Mrs. Cole, should I” “It’s fine,” Marissa said softly. And then She saw her. Lena Voss. Standing behind the desk. Composed. Still. Watching. The air shifted instantly. Two women. One truth. And no words yet spoken.
