CHAPTER XXXVIII

1560 Words
Back at the Kibich Maximum Security Prison, Agent 2 explained the mission to John and his partner once they met. There was one prisoner said to have enough evidence to expose the whole mission. He posed no threat for as long as he remained in prison but his time was almost over. They could not risk him coming out and presenting the evidence to someone like David and his son. All could be lost. He needed to die. Having been brought up to speed, it was time for John to do his duty and plan on how to get rid of the threat. The two agents had nothing to do with the killing. They were just there to make sure that John did his part. He was to do the killing. When John saw the man he was sent to kill, he had to take a thought. The man happened to be very old. Old enough to pose not a threat to anyone. In fact, he got lucky with each day he woke up. As he was battling with his conscience on whether to kill the old man, David and Peterson had come up with a plan to get to him. The following morning, Peterson did as they had planned and visited John in prison posing as his attorney. Although John expected no visit from any attorney, he still had to meet him. It could have been an agent sent by the Clairvoyant or the Mystery man to deliver a message to them. Indeed, it was true. Peterson was no agent of doom but of light and, had a message for John. They had managed to find his weakness and used it against him. In other words, they were blackmailing him to betray his fellow angels of darkness. They were not sure whether it could work but kept their faith on their knowledge and experience. Shortly after Peterson left the prison, John got a visit from the two agents. They were interested in knowing who Peterson was and what could have brought him to see John. He threw them off with an excuse about lawsuits with his wife. From what he had heard from Peterson, he knew that if the agents had even the slightest clue of what they had talked about, things could not end well for him. Indeed, David and Peterson had their faith at the right place. That was his first move against his colleagues. Peterson had also mentioned to him that Jean had succumbed to the injury. Having been fed all that information, he had too much weighing on him. The agents too had more for him. He was ordered to kill the man by nightfall that day or things could get ugly for him. Having a choice to make as soon as possible, he behaved like someone on hard drugs. Surprises were not over for him. As he sat by himself trying to figure out the best option to take, his would-be victim approached and sat by his side. John’s first move was to check around whether the agents were watching him. Indeed, they stood watch like night guards from different corners of the prison yard. One of them signaled him to go ahead with the talk. This man started by identifying himself to John. Just as John was about to do the same, the man cut him short. “I am Jupita Mars and I have been in here for the last twenty years serving a sentence for a crime I knew nothing about. In two weeks’ time, I will walk out of those gates a free man and honestly, I don’t know what to do once I am out there.” “I am…” Jupita interrupted... “Save your breath. I know who you are son. I also know you are here to kill me because... they say I have something important. I also know they are watching you as we speak detective.” “How do you know all this, yet… you have been here for all those years?” “I know a lot of things... John. I also know that you tried to kill me yesterday but could not do it. Just like I know... you had a visitor today and that’s why they are watching you right now.” “Who did you say you are again? What did you say your name was?” “Jupita Mars.” “What kind of a name is Jupita Mars?” “The kind that shows how far you are from the truth. The truth is Mars... and you are Jupiter. Live long enough and you learn to see things before they happen.” “What truth are you talking about?” “That man that visited you earlier… do you know him?” As John was trying to answer the question, the man stopped him by the show of hand. “Hold it son. You don’t have to answer that. I know you don’t know him. How did I know? Spend enough time within these walls and you learn to see beyond the horizon. You spend so much time doing nothing until… you learn to do something with the nothing. I think you should listen to him and take his offer. It will never end any better for you. It never had to be a choice in the first place.” “I can’t do that. If I do, those agents will have my family killed and I will spend the rest of my life here.” “Son, you killed your family the minute you agreed to be their pawn. The day you went into bed with them, it does not matter for what reasons you did it… hoping there are. That is the day you ended your life. That attorney is just trying to help you save whatever you can salvage when you still can.” “You speak as one who has done it yourself. What were you accused of doing anyway?” “Son, my time is running out. I have not enough left for history lessons. You need to ask the right questions.” “Well, do you have the evidence they say you have? And if so, where is it? May be... if you give it to them, they will spare you.” “Look at me son… what is left of me for them to kill? I died the minute I entered those gates. They will just kill a dead man already. And yes, I have the evidence but neither will I give it to you nor them.” “What good will it do anyone if you are dead?” “Right now… you should worry about your own life and stop eating more than you can chew.” “Why then did you have to speak to me if you will not give me the evidence?” “I just wanted you to do me a favor. In my cell, I have a book and inside the book is the address to my daughter’s residence. I would want you to let her know that I love her so much and I had no other choice.” “I thought you said you are getting out of here soon. You will tell her yourself.” “Are you not to kill me by night fall detective? Anyway, when the attorney comes tomorrow, take the offer. Before I leave, take this.” He handed him a piece of paper written a book ISBN number, “it is the number of the book that has the address to my daughter's place. Keep it safe and never lose it.” “I will not kill you. Tell that to your daughter yourself,” John said looking at the piece of paper in a manner not to attract attention. “I know but… let’s just say… I just have a hunch. And detective… I would keep that safe.” He stood up in preps for leaving, “You know my name…” he looked down at him and took short strides walking away, “…which makes me your friend…” he turned his head around to look at him again, “…and the reason you owe me this favor.” John lifted his eyes off the paper to look at him; “I thought you said Jupita is….” he stopped talking as he saw the man walk away. As weird as that was, he just had a talk with his target and what he heard threw him off his balance. He was certain that the agents would want to know the contents of the piece of paper he was given. Upon returning to his cell, he memorized the number and did away with the paper. Once the agents came asking about it, he had another that he could use to get them off his back. David and Peterson knew one thing for sure. After Peterson had visited John at the prison, it raised so many eyebrows and his family could be in danger. They had been in the army long enough to know it. They traced his family and relocated them to a safer place without his knowledge.
