CHAPTER XXVIII

941 Words
Moments later, news from the officers sent out to get the Minister’s mistress reached the detective. The mistress was nowhere to be found. She was not in her apartment. According to her neighbors, she had not been seen in the past couple of days. Things got more complicated. The only person that could prove the Minister’s wife story was missing and no one knew how to find her. As bad as that seemed, it was not yet time to give up the case. It was not the end of the trail. After a while of silence, the Minister’s wife asked the detective to open the documents that she had been sent showing her husband and the mistress together. Detective Jean opened them without knowing what the Minister’s wife was looking for. She asked detective Jean to check the dates on the pictures as well as on the envelop they were in. According to the statements from her neighbors, it happened to be the very same dates, a couple of days earlier, which the lady was said to have stopped going to her apartment. This was not good news at all to the ears of the Detectives and her team. They knew this could only mean one thing; it was just a matter of time and they would find her dead body in the streets. At this point, there was nothing to prove that the Minister did not have an affair with the woman and the authenticity of the picture of him and her. The Minister’s wife, after hearing that the mistress was nowhere to be found suspected that the Minister’s affair could be fraud. Swindle that she fell for and landed herself in trouble. To her surprise, when she got hold of her husband’s financial documents, she found something different from what the other documents she had were saying. Her husband had left everything he owned to her. She was the next of kin to his wealth. If only she knew that before she did what she had done. It was time it dawned on her; someone wanted her out of the way by taking the fall for her husband’s murder. At the time, there was no way to prove that she did not kill her husband. On top of the documents about the affair, she had her husband’s body stolen from the morgue and cut off some parts to gain access to his private account. Although there was a possibility of her not having killed her husband, it could not be admissible in court. Too bad for her, it was not about what she knew or thought but what she could prove in court. The detective and her crew might also have had the same idea that she was innocent but the evidence at hand put her right behind bars. The Minister’s wife had to go to prison but Jean promised her to find out more about the case and find anything that could exonerate her. Detective John got a call. As usual, it was from the Mystery man. He was interested in knowing whether things were going according to plan and the progress at the precinct. Unfortunately, the fail-safe was meant to throw the detective off course but it somehow pointed her to the right direction. To this day, they had no clue that something fishy was going on within the government. Thanks to the so-called fail-safe, Jean had a clue that something was cooking. The serikali (government) she knew was becoming more of a sirikali (top secret) that she had to investigate. The Clairvoyant’s plan to lure detective Jean away was not working. Something else had to be done and fast. At the speed and resources at her disposal, it was just a matter of time and she would uncover the truth. The bodies on the streets and the death of the Minister did not lead the detective away. On the contrary, she was getting closer to the truth and to piecing the puzzles together. That was not something the Clairvoyant and his people would want happening. It had come time for them to take yet another overall action on the situation. Something had to be done and done fast to slow the detective’s investigation. Detective Jean was determined to solve the case at all cost. She was like a dog with a bone. At first, it was difficult but got easier with the Minister’s death and the wife being framed for it. The fact that he was a man of the people made it clear to her. Something was going on within the government and, she was eager to find out what it was. A woman associated with the Minister and termed as his mistress was missing. That was the perfect point for her to start her investigation from. Her disappearance had more to it than just disappearing. The detective believed that if she found the mistress, whether dead or alive, she could find the truth about whatever that was going on. She had also started to develop an instinct that their lives would be in danger if she got closer to the truth. From that point, they had a new mission to find out more about the missing woman. If they were to get any closer to solving the case fully and understanding the whole situation, they had to find the woman. All they could hope for was that the woman was still alive and could answer some of the questions they had in mind. Upon their decision, John had to make a call and fast. He had to notify his Mystery man of the development.
