In the Captain’s office, first, Jean thought to let the Captain in on who Jonas and David were and why they had brought them to the precinct. He had a different idea; save it to the end of the briefing. They did not have enough time to talk about it in length but just a mention.
The Captain had not called her for a heads up but, because he had received a call from the Eastern side of the city. Police on patrol had found a dead body. There was another murder in need for their attention and they needed to follow up on it as soon as they were informed. A dead body was the last thing they needed lying lifeless on the streets, exposed more than it already had been.
“Yes Captain. How may I be of assistance?”
“It is not me you should be worried about detective. We just got a call from the Eastern side of the city reporting a dead body found dumped in an abandoned warehouse. This demon you articulate much about just killed another man and drained his blood.”
“Things are not getting any better, are they now? It seems they are getting worse. Let me get my partner and proceed to check it out.”
“Okay detective, and… I do not have to remind you to be careful... do I now? If the demon you talk about is out there, it must be aware you are after it and it might not be happy about it. Make sure you are not the next victim we find carved and dead on the streets and without blood.”
“I will… we will be careful sir. We always are.”
“You better be. I have no speech good enough for your father in case you end up dead. You know the kind of man he is and can be upon such happening.”
“I sure know sir. I have spent more than twenty years in his house. I know him very well. He does not like people hurting me or hearing me in trouble or danger. I became detective against his wish after my brother’s mysterious death, remember?”
“Okay detective… you can now go. You have a murder case to solve. Find out whether this one gets us any closer. We need the murders solved and the killer, or, demon arrested. By the way, you can now mention about the new quittances you brought in with you?”
“They are David Smith and Jonas Smith, father and son.”
“Do I need to know why you have father and son in my precinct?”
“Actually sir, they happen to be related to Jessica Smith. David is her husband while…” Meake interrupted to complete the sentence.
“Oh… the Smiths… I see. Jonas Smith is the son. And, who is this Rebecca Maya you talked about and how does any of that help to at least chain this demon that’s killing people?”
“The woman we notified you of going to see earlier…?”
“Oh yes, about that, how did it go? I thought she was Jessica Smith. Who is Rebecca Maya?”
“Well sir, as I have mentioned earlier, Jonas is Jessica’s son and David, the old one, is…”
“…the husband, my memory still serves me well enough detective. I also happen to know the husband, just not in relation to Jessica. I have seen him around and… our paths may have crossed in the past.”
“Forgive my curiosity but, how exactly do you know him sir?”
“Well… the Department of Security and that of Defense are not as big as you may think once you are in such a position as myself. You get to know the major players; anybody and everybody who turns out to be different from the rest.”
“How different is he and how is he a major player?”
“Story for another day detective. Care to mention about this Rebecca Maya and why the two gentlemen are here?”
“Well, the son, Jonas, has a powerful gift beyond which his great grandmother Rebecca Maya had, the woman in the article. He envisions only not but also said to have more up his sleeve. Moreover, of course, the father could not be left behind knowing his history and all. He is also trying to right previous wrongs by making up for the lost father-time to his son. I figured we might need all the help we can get. You should also know; as far as they are concerned, they are suspects.”
“Why suspects, did you find anything on them?”
“Actually, no sir but… do you remember those engravings on the body we found last week? Jonas had them written in his journal. He also had my portrait drawn in the journal. He claims to have seen me in one of his visions despite us having not met before.”
“How is that possible? Tell me he doesn’t claim to see the engravings in his so-called visions as well.”
“Actually sir, he does claim so.”
“Are you suspecting he might have something to do with the murders? Like being the killer for instance. How do you even assent to all this in being in his dreams or whatever he calls them?”
“Of course not sir, he is too innocent to be a killer. I know a killer when I see one. About me being in his dreams… I am yet to find out. They are the reasons I brought them along. I really need answers to these questions.”
“And you thought bringing them here would help and have answers closer to you… huh?”
“This might sound totally unprofessional but sir, we really need all the help we can get. It seemed like the best way to get them to help us. I also had to keep the young man close to me and away from anybody that might want to hurt him. If he sees what he says he sees and from what I have already witnessed, he is definitely a target or will be one very soon.”
“What is it that you have seen detective, other than the engravings and your portrait of course?”
“To properly answer your questions, I might need to borrow his journal on your behalf. I think it will answer some of those questions and be interesting for you to go through. All is in there including some bits about Rebecca Maya. I have to go Captain; this mention seems to becoming more than just that. I will need a favor from you though.”
“Just mention detective. What is this favor that you need?”
“I would like to take them with me to the crime scene. Maybe, they might help us identify what we could be missing to solve these homicides.”
“I trust you detective and as long as it helps us solve this case, then it’s a go for me. Furthermore, I need time to go through the journal that you should remember to borrow on my behalf. I cannot do it with them around destructing me. My curiosity and temptation levels to question Jonas are at peak.”
“Just take them with you and get out of my air. And detective… bring me good news this time.”
“We will do our level best sir that I promise.”
Detective Jean left the Captain’s office and went down to meet John and the rest of her team. They had to go to inspect the crime scene with the hope to solve the murder. David and Jonas did not know Jean’s plan and neither did John know about it. It was only her and now the captain that knew the main reason she had brought Jonas and his father to the precinct.
She had to keep it that way until otherwise. All she needed to do was make it look like the captain had ordered David and Jonas taken along to the crime scene.
She picked up her side arm and badge and headed to the interrogation room to get the rest. After opening the interrogation room door, immediately, John realized something was up. From the look on Jean’s face, John concluded of a possibility of another murder in the city and they needed to investigate the scene and at least try to solve it.
“What’s wrong Jean? Is it another murder? Who is it this time and how bad is it?” asked Detective John.
“It’s a male, mid 30s… found dead in an abandoned warehouse on the Eastern side of the city.”
“It’s getting worse by the day huh?”
“I wish I could say otherwise. You hear that Jonas, your killer has just killed another innocent man,” Jean told Jonas.
“He is not my killer and I do not know anything about the murder. I am just gifted…that’s all,” Jonas responded.
“As he said, he is no killer but, if there is another body in the city, we might help you solve it. Maybe, we will help you arrest this murderer and leave my son alone,” said David.
“As it seems soldier, you don’t have any other choice. You better pray we get enough for a lead and; find something for us when we take you along with us,” replied Detective Jean.
They all got into a Toyota Axio, one of the police cruisers specified for the detectives, and left for the scene. Meanwhile, the captain had the journal to keep him busy. Although he was not sure of what they were dealing with, he surely saw things in there that made him think otherwise. Everything Jean had told him concerning the world about to end had started to become clear to him. All he hoped for at the time was; they would capture the murderer and put an end to the murders.
