Detectives Jean and John got out of their vehicle and walked a detective’s walk, looking around for clues and a possible starting point, towards the house. Jean did not leave behind the newspaper article. She carried it with her. She knew that, one of the questions Jessica would ask was how they had found out about the house.
They got to the door and knocked as usual. Jessica opened the door for them to get inside although she was not willing. She first had to hear what they had to say while they stood outside the door. The very first question was to know why they had visited her home.
“Hello ma’am. My name is Detective Jean Roberts and… this is my partner Detective John Walter. Are you Jessica Smith?”
“And what is this all about? Why are you looking for Jessica Smith?”
“Ma’am, it’s nothing bad. She is not in trouble or anything. We just need her help,” Detective John assured.
“Why would you want Jessica’s help?” Jessica asked.
“Here ma’am. I think this might interest you. (She gave Jessica the newspaper article.) It has something to do with this.”
Jessica looked at the article and immediately, she sensed that things were already moving faster than any whirlwind ever recorded. The apocalypse had taken off. She decided to let them in to hear what they needed from her.
“So, what kind of help do you need Detectives?”
“We understand that someone gifted used to live in this house years ago,” Detective Jean started.
“Of course that’s what the article is all about.”
“We know that she is not here to help us but we just figured out that maybe, you could have some answers to the questions we have.”
“Sorry detectives, I don’t think I can help you. I just bought a house and I know nothing about the woman in the article in relation to all this she talked about.”
“It’s okay ma’am. We understand this might be strange to you as well, so, we just need your permission to check around the house for anything related to all this,” detective John explained.
“As much as I might give you the consent, believe me, it will do you no good. I have lived here for the past ten years and I have found nothing out of place,”
“Ma’am, we are detectives and trained to see what others may not see. Our work is to make simple clues have meaning,” Jean added.
“You may be trained but there is no detective good enough to beat my ten years around the house. I have my eyes around the compound for ten years to miss something that you hope to find now.”
“We really need your help ma’am. The city is in trouble and a few clues might just help us save it,” John pleaded.
“Let’s hear the questions and maybe I will help if I have the answers.” Jessica offered at last.
“Have you been watching the television lately Mrs.….” asked Detective Jean.
“Mrs. David… and yes… I have been watching the television. What about the television?”
“Have you seen the series of murders that are happening around the city?”
“Yes I have but these things happen all the time. It is a city and with all kinds of people. Some want no good for others. What has changed about this time?”
“I am afraid Mrs. David but this time; the bodies are a little different from a normal murder victim.”
“How different are they and what does this have to do with me, the house or this woman’s capabilities Detectives?” she asked pointing at the newspaper article.
“Normally, a body would have blood and not used in the place of a canvas.”
“What do you mean by that Detective?”
“She means we think there is something out there hunting and carving on people and that is very bloodthirsty,” said Detective John.
“This woman’s powers were to tell the future and she is dead. How do you expect the house or me to help you with this?”
“One of the woman’s visions was about something to do with the end of the world, right?” Jean suggested.
”Yes, she did talk about something like that and the proof is right here… (pointing at the article) but, how does this relate to the killings in the city?”
“Well, Mrs. David, something is killing people in a very inhumane way around the city. We have no animals around this place on the loose and... that can do this kind of damage. What else could be killing people in such a manner and draining them off of blood!” Jean exclaimed in wonder.
“The world is changing detective. People are getting stranger by the day. I may not have powers but... I bet anything is possible. You may have-not the animals you know about roaming the city but I can surely tell you there is an animal out there and it might not be the kind of animal you would expect it to be.”
I do not understand what you are saying, Mrs. David. Pardon me but are you trying to say that someone out there might be actually killing people and sucking their blood?” asked detective John.
“What I am saying detectives is that there is a rumor that the world is about to end. This rumor must have a source and people react to situations differently.”
“What is this difference that can make someone literary slaughter another and drain their blood?” asked detective Jean.
“Do you go to church detective Jean?”
“Of course I do.”
“Do you believe in God and His existence?”
“Of course I do believe in God although… I am not sure of the degree but… why these questions?”
“Because Detective… if you believe in God… it means there is also Satan. What you know and still ignoring is that, just like you have faith and believe in God, there are those that believe in the devil too.”
“And this means what? Slaughter people and suck their blood?” asked detective John mockingly.
”…No detective, as a sacrifice. They say that doing good deeds to others will eventually take you to heaven… right? Well, it is also true that doing the worst evil will get people to hell. Believe me; some people want to go to hell as badly as you wish heaven. What could be a greater evil than killing people as a sacrifice?”
“I agree with Mrs. David. In school, we have some boys that will do anything just to prove they are bad asses. If boys can do that then it means others can kill for sacrifice to their master,” supposed Kate in support of Jessica.
“Ma’am, now that you have us think that this could be a person in deep faith, where can we find this person?” asked detective John.
“Is that not what you are paid to do detective? To detect… right? Well, I suggest you go detect. You have what you came for and I think it’s time for you to leave.”
“All right ma’am, we shall go but could we please have a word with your son just for a few seconds?” requested Jean.
“You do not give up detective, do you now?”
‘As you said, I am a detective and a good one. I do not give up easily. Not until I have what I want,” replied Jean.
“I love your spirit detective. I am sorry but… my son is not here. They went away with his father. They have pressing matters they are addressing.”
“Okay ma’am, thank you for your time. We shall be leaving now but, just in case he comes back, give me a call or send him to our precinct. He can really help us on this one.”
“He is just a youth detective. I do not think he can be of much help to you. I told you everything we know,”
“Well, he may be a youth but a gifted one. That gift must mean something… right?” Jean asked.
“I have no answer to that question detective. I wish I could answer you but I can’t.”
“Very well then, have a nice day ma’am,” detective John appreciated as they left the house.
