CHAPTER VII

Jonas was still enjoying every moment with his girlfriend. It was time to find out her reaction towards gifted people. Jonas had the right test for that. As usual, Jonas was not the speedy type of person. That meant that, before he could ask her, she did manage to ask him hers first.

“Jonas, you know I love you, right?”

“Of course I know you love me and I love you too. Why do you say this Kate? What‘s up? What do you have in mind?”

“Nothing, it’s just that… I wanted to ask you something and, please tell me the truth.”

“Okay, go ahead and ask. If I have the answer, I will surely give you.”

“I know that those boys chasing you around do not make you perform poorly in class. I know you well. There is something more besides the bullies. After all, these days they are getting tired of it. What is really bothering you?”

“Well Kate, I will not lie to you. The truth is I did not like this school at all. In fact, I never liked being here at all. All I ever wanted was to be out of this neighborhood and go. With this in my mind, I could not get it together.”

“Is that it? That’s your reason for not doing well in class?”

“Pretty much yes but I promise you… I will change. After all, I just have what it takes for me to like the neighborhood and the school.”

“What could that be that you did not have before?”

“I did not have you as my girlfriend and close to me. Whenever we are together I forget my problems and my head can think clearly.”

“But we have been together for some time since I made you drive me around.”

“Yes but still I was not sure you could be my real girlfriend. That took the best part of me.”

“Okay, I get you but promise me that all will change. If not for anything else, just do it for me.”

“I promise I will.”

Jonas could not just go right ahead to ask about superhuman powers after a discussion that personal to both. It could trigger her to suspect something. Kate was a smart girl and she could read between the lines fast. Doing this could have her quickly conclude he was talking about himself. To solve this, he brought up a dissimilar topic of discussion that drew their minds off their life into other things. After a few minutes, he thought it was the right time to ask her about it.

“Kate, have you ever thought of how life would be like if we had superhuman abilities?”

“Why would I even think about that? I am good the way I am, we all are good this way. Why are you interested anyway?”

“No, it’s just a thought, nothing much. Just that, I see it in the movies people using the abilities and it looks cool.”

“They do look cool in the movies but, you very well know that, that cannot happen in reality. Why bother to even think about it?”

“Just curious, that’s all. Could you still love me if I happened to have powers? Could you love me as a superhuman?”

“Of course I could love you any time anywhere and for whomever you are, even a superhuman. Because… I know those things only happen in the movies and… you cannot be one.”

“I am serious Kate. I would like your sincere answer.”

“Why are you so much concerned anyway? Is there something you are not telling me, Jonas?”

“It’s nothing. Just let it go. I do believe you and I know you love me.”

“No Jonas, we will not let it go. You have to tell me why you asked that question. I have been around you for some time now and I am a woman. We understand others faster than you men do. Given the time we have spent together, I know you do not just do things without there being a reason for your actions. Tell me the truth or I will go right now.”

“It’s nothing, Kate. Believe me. That is the truth.”

“No Jonas… that is not the truth. In fact, I could see it in your face that you had something bothering you the whole time except when we kissed. That was the only time your mind was free. Now you have to tell me what it has to do with superhuman.”

Indeed, Jonas was right that Kate was a very wise girl. She was onto him and was not willing to back off until she heard what she wanted. One thing she was sure about was that, when Jonas told her about him failing because he did not like the place, there was some truth in it but not the whole truth. Now that she had a chance to get it out of him, she had to do her best to do so.

“You see those abilities I was asking about… I think I might have them.”

“What did you just say?” she queried looking at him as if she had seen a ghost.

“I think I have a unique gift. I might be superhuman.”

“Of course you do. You love me and, we love each other. Love makes us superhuman.”

“Yeah, I know but, far from that. I mean real powers.”

“Since when did you know this, or, how do you know this?”

“You see those dreams I have been telling you I have… they are not dreams. They are visions of what will happen if I don’t help to stop it.”

“You mean the ones about the end of days? How are you even going to do that?”

“…with the use of this gift that I have and, I believe something will come up as well.”

“How do you know you have a gift? Is it by dreaming and thinking of your dreams as visions?”

“Now you sound just like my father. He reacted just the same way.”

“Well, forgive me my love but… unlike you who think have powers, I am a human and this is how I react to my boyfriend telling me he is superhuman. Can you show me what you say so that I can believe you?”

“One day I woke up and started preparing myself to go to school. I took a shower and went on to dress up. As I was brushing my teeth in the bathroom, I started imagining things. The more I thought about it, the more real they became. Strange visions that felt so real. As if that was not strange enough, when I spat the foam in the sink to gurgle some water, the tap just turned and water started running.

I was very scared. I could not believe what was happening. As if that was not all, I felt very strong like someone possessed. When I leaned on the sink to take a good look at myself, the sink shattered. That is how I realized I was not just a normal person. I got so afraid but, I have never experienced it in that manner again.”

“What a story, but… I need to see it to believe it Jonas. Show me these powers. Do something.”

“About that, I do not control when these flashes come. They just happen and, since that day, I have never seen things move by themselves around me again. May be it was a message.”

“Wow, that’s quite a story but, how do you expect me to believe it?”

“I guess you just have to take my word for it. Don’t you love me?”

“Yes, I do love you Jonas but, I have to make sure that my boyfriend is not going nuts.”

At that moment, Jonas knew that the only way Kate would believe him was to show her his abilities. He was not sure how he would do it but he knew he had to think of something and fast. He tried anything just to try to trigger the flashes or the super strength but nothing happened. He even tried movements with his eyes, hands and legs but nothing. In fact, even if it did work, there was no way for her to see the visions as well. She was not very happy about it. In fact, she was worried. Finally, she yelled at him to stop.

“You know Jonas; I really love you so much. My advice is… you need to see a doctor very soon. I do not want to get married to a mad man. Your father was right. You really need help.”

“Honey, believe me, I have special abilities. It is only that I do not really know how I can make you see them but I can feel it. Please believe me.”

“See Jonas, I do not blame you. Let me lay the blame on those stupid boys in school for now. Allow me to ask you a question though. If you were in my shoes and I said what you just said, would you believe me? Tell me Jonas… would you?”

Jonas had no answer to that question. Deep down, he knew it would sound very weird to him too. He just kept quiet looking at her without anything to say.

“Exactly as I thought Jonas; you see, even you yourself know that what you are doing is wrong. I think it’s time I went back home before you get that madness into my head too.”

“Please do not go honey, just believe me. Come back. Do not leave me here alone.”

“Let me go Jonas, and please, go see a doctor and apologize to your father. He was right; you are sick.”

Jonas had nothing to say and just watched her start the car and drive away. That hit him so hard that he started blaming God for giving him a stressful life and yelling he never wanted the powers.

He yelled and yelled but I think… God was busy at the time because, He did not seem to hear or honor Jonas’ request. After realizing that God was not going to hear his yells, he had no other choice but to take his bike and ride in the direction it was facing not knowing where he wanted to go.

It is true that sometimes when people cannot help or be there for you, nature always does it the best and known to provide answers and solutions when no one else can. He rode to some woods to have some time alone, seek answers as well as kill enough time such that he would meet his parents away.

After he spent enough of this lone time, it was time to go back home. He had sworn never to talk to anyone else again about any of the matters in relation to his powers and the end of days.

As he rode home, I also thought it would be best if I take a break too. Nevertheless, I do commit to get you the rest of the story.
