CHAPTER XXVI

Jonas laughed at the joke. They got into the car and headed for the morgue to try finding some answers to the disappearance of the Minister’s body. After a short drive around the city, they arrived and entered the morgue. Indeed, it was just as Ruddick had explained. Nothing was out of place and there was no sign of breakage or violence. That indicated whoever had taken the body must have had easy access to the morgue. The only problem was that, Ruddick was the only one with the keys to the morgue. The other pair of keys was in the custody of Kibich Central Teaching and Referral Hospital (KCTRH). At the time, none of them thought anyone would even get access to the keys from the hospital. The fact was, no one thought about the keys to have been taken. They moved around looking for clues but found none. Even in the security footages, there was nothing at the time the body disappeared. Whoever had taken the Minister’s body was good and must have had enough time to plan or had good connections. With no fruits about the Minister’s afterlife mission, they had only the option of looking around the morgue for any other clues that could help them. Before they left, they had to leave two officers with Ruddick just to be cautious and to make Ruddick feel safe. Jonas gave a suggestion to look at the stores and businesses around the morgue for any surveillance cameras. No matter how good the plan was executed, it could never lack even the slightest of miscalculation. That is what they were looking for and that could channel them to the right direction. They looked around but, so untoward for them, all the stores around the morgue had their cameras tampered with at the time of the incident as well. This made it harder for them to trace. Just as they were about to give up and head back to the precinct, David could not give in that easily. Being a sniper soldier and having experiences behind enemy lines in wars, he knew a thing or two about being invisible and surveillance too. He also knew that a little more patience could mean the difference between life and death. In this case, it could mean cracking the case. Just across the street several meters from the morgue, was a nightclub. He proposed to them to pay the club a visit before they could pack up and go. Upon entering the club and asking to review their security footages, the story was no different from the others only this time, David knew a little more than the others did. He knew such a nightclub could not have all their cameras on one system. The club owners knew more than having all their eggs in the same basket. This would help them whenever an incident came up and or such cases of cameras being messed up with. As it was, David was right and with a little persuasion, the club manager showed them the previous night’s surveillance recording. The camera had managed to capture something but not much because of its distance from the morgue and the fact that it was hidden. They managed to see people take the body and got a license plate for the car used although it was just a partial. The men that took the body were masked and they accessed the morgue without any trouble. Since they were police officers, the license plate being not visible was not something they were worried about. It also meant that they had keys to the morgue hence the easy access. With the license plate, they just had to go back to the precinct and have it enhanced and made visible. Having gotten this, they were at a position to head back to the precinct and work on finding the people behind the Minister’s kidnapping. After the license plate was enhanced and became visible, it was found out to be stolen from an impound lock. The kidnappers were wise enough to use a vehicle that could not be traced back to them. The police put out an APB in the search for the van. After a while, an officer reported the car dumped along an isolated alley.
