Chapter 6: The DNA test

380 Words
Damian’s office was cold than a morgue. He didn’t look up when I walked in. “ Close the door, Aria.” My hands shook. Leo’s medical bill was crumbled in my pocket. $87,000. Due in 58 hours. “I need help,” l said. “Leo’s —“ “DNA.” Damian slammed a folder on his desk. “ I want his DNA. Now.” My blood froze. “What?” He finally looked at me. Those gray eyes. Leo’s eyes. “I’ll pay his bills. If he’s not…” He didn’t finish. He didn’t have to . “ You think am lying?”my voice cracked . “You think I trapped you ?” “ I think you’re a waitress who vanished after one night.” His jaw clenched. “ With my son.” So. He said. I stepped closer. “ Fine. Test him. But you don’t touch Leo . You don’t care him. You meet him as his… as a friend .” Damian laughed. It wasn’t kind. “You don’t get to make rules. Not anymore.” He pulled out a cotton swab. “ Open your son’s mouth for me. Or I will send my lawyers to do it.” The door burst open. Leo stood there. Pale. Wheezing. IV stand dragging behind him. “Mom?” Damian went completely still. Leo looked at Damian. Then at me. Then back at Damian. His little face crumpled. “You… you look like me.” The room went silent. Damian dropped the swab. For the first time, NYC’s coldest billionaire looked terrified. “Mom,” Leo whispered, tugging my hand. “ Is he my dad?” I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t lie. Couldn’t speak. Damian’s phone buzzed on the desk. He glanced at it. His face went white. It was the hospital. “Mrs. Cross?” The nurse’s voice was shaky . “Your son’s donor match just fell through. We need $87,000 by tomorrow morning or we take him off the transplant list.” Damian stared at Leo . Then at me. Then at the phone. He picked up the swab again. His hand was shaking. “ After the test,” he said, voice like ice . “ If his mine , l own him. And you.”
