CHAPTER 13“Lost?” Spotty said, after a stunned silence. “All we have to do is get out there and—” “We’ve lost,” Matt repeated flatly. “We’ve got plenty of time to beat Kurt!” “But we can’t.” “Wake up, Matt. Remember, this is Saturday. Kurt couldn’t have gone to the cave yesterday, and he had to get a lot of sleep last night for the state meet today. And that’ll take all of today. We can go out to the cave, have a survey finished and our claim filed by late this afternoon.” Matt shook his head. “Kurt’s won. Nothing we can do.” “You talk like a guy on the wrong side of the happy-farm fence,” Spotty yelled. “Why?” “We can’t win, so the reason doesn’t matter.” “Reason matters more than anything,” Spotty said. “Some guys are born to win,” Matt said. “The rest of us are born to lose.”
