CHAPTER SIX: His shadows Everywhwere

1078 Words
The streets were quiet as Laura approached her small apartment, the night crisp and carrying a faint scent of exhaust, and Ray....yes, his scent was lingering around her. She thought of the club, music, the tension - and then of him. That dark, commanding presence haunted her thoughts and dreams. She unlocked her door and stepped inside, thinking herself safe. But she wasn't expecting him to push himself in. '' Thought I'd make sure you got home safely,' he said from shadows of her apartment, leaning casually but alert. Laura froze, a mix of surprise and relief washing over her. '' I....I didn't see you come in, '' she stammered, her pulse quickening. ''Im always watching, '' he replied , his tone low, almost a growl. '' especially when you're alone. '' Her heart raced, not just from the sudden presence but from the undeniable heat of him being so close, so a ware of every movement she made. '' you can't -'' she began, but he raised his a finger , stopping her mid -word. '' I can, and i will. Not like this. '' Laura felt her knees weaken. he wasn't just a figure in the club anymore. He was here, in her personal space, and every instinct screamed both danger and safety at the same time. He stepped closer, eyes scanning the room with careful precision that made her pulse thrum in her veins. ''I'll stay until am sure you're safe, '' he said softly, though every inch of him radiated a quiet warning - stay close, stay alert. She wanted to protest and wanted to tell him she could manage herself, but something in his gaze, in the way he seemed to envelop the room in protection, made her stop. for once, she allowed herself to relax slightly, to let someone take care of her - even if only for a few moments. '' You don't understand, '' she whispered, '' I'm not used to this .... attention. '' '' You will, '' he said, almost gently, and the briefest moment, his hardened edges softened . '' And may be ..... you'll like it. Laura's breath caught as he stepped closer, just close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating of him. not touching her, not yet - but close enough that she felt it everywhere. She realised, in that moment, how much danger was outside the club and how she wanted him to stay. Not just for safety .... but because his presence had become intoxicating. The night stretched on, and though he never crossed the line, the chemistry between them was undeniable. She was learning slowly that with him came danger, protection, desire - and her life might shift in ways she wasn't prepared for ........ or even know how to prepare for .... yet couldn't resist. She didn't know how much she could control herself because his presence filled her small apartment, drawing the air thinner. every move he made was precise, protective, and consuming. when he finally turned back to her, shadows cut across his face, and for the moment, she saw something almost human beneath that iron face. I will stay until I am sure you're safe, "he said quietly. The ways he said safe - like it was a promise - and a warning - made chest tighten. She hesitated for while ,thinking that things were moving first - so first that she couldn't think. '' Why do i need your protection - and why are you saying you need to make sure I am safe , '' she asked . He didn't answer. he only took a step closer. '' You should rest, '' he murmured ,his voice softer now. '' You've had enough eyes on you for one night. Don't think too much. Laura tried to laugh, to brush it off, but the exhaustion caught up with her. she moved toward the couch, pulling the blanket over her lap. Ray stood over the window, keeping watch like he was expecting something, which made her more scared of what to expect. The city light painted him in silver and gold , his profile sharp against the glass. Minutes stretched. Then, an hour, neither spoke, but the silence was thick with everything they didn't say. when she finally whispered, ' Do you ever rest? '' he turned his gaze to ward her. '' Not when I'm guarding something, i can't afford to lose. '' Something inside her cracked open. She stood slowly, crossing the room until she was just inches away. '' You talk like I'm something important. '' He didn't blink, '' You are. '' The air plused between them. Neither moved, but every second drew them closer until she could feel his breath ghost against her lips. '' Don't, '' she whispered, eyes dark and searching hers. '' Tell me to stop,'' he murmured. She didn't, she couldn't........, she couldn't tell him to stop, and that scared her even more . The kiss came quiet - soft at first, uncertain, then deepening with the kind of hunger that had waited for too long. his had touched her waist, pulling her closer to him, the touch reverent yet possessive. the world outside vanished When they finally pulled apart, both were breathing hard. his forehead rested against her, and that moment he knew he would do anything to keep her by his side. '' You should sleep,'' he whispered. '' And you? '' she asked. '' I'll be here. '' Laying on bed and looking at the man who everyone is afraid of , the man who says the word and is done .....is in her small apartment now , protecting her. she felt excited and scared of what life ahead , she fell asleep knowing that for once , the shadows around her weren't just danger - they were him. The next morning, sunlight spilled the blinds, painting her small apartment in gold. Laura blinked a wake to find him still there, sitting by the window with the cup of coffee she didn't remember brewing. You don't sleep much, ' she said softly. He looked at her , faint amusement touching his lips. '' Old habits. You learn to stay awake in my world. '' She studied him in the morning light - how the hardness around his eyes seemed less severe, how his voice lost some of its edge. '' And what world is that exactly?''
