HAILEY
“Your sister must marry him. That was my father's reply to the haunting proposal we got yesterday.”
I paced back and forth in my room, wondering why my father would accept such a proposal.
I don't seem to get why he would accept handing over my sister to a random guy.
Yes. He's rich. He's the richest billionaire in the country.
And we're also not poor. At least we could afford basic things.
Is he that desperate to get rich? I wondered.
He didn't even give my sister, Bexley, a listening ear. He didn't care to know about her past with him. How he shattered her heart into pieces.
Now, he has accepted the proposal even though my sister was vehemently against it and tomorrow is the supposed wedding.
Maybe he's more interested in the money and benefits that come as the father-in-law of the richest man in the country or there's more to it.
I have to do something. Bexley can't be married off like that just because my father wants it.
I thought of going to meet her in her room. Though my heart was clouded with uncertainty, I was sure we would figure something out.
I knocked on her door with expectations to meet her crying like she'd been doing since yesterday.
Instead, she was packing her clothes in her suitcase.
“Bexley. What are you doing?”
I tried to stop her but whenever she'd made up her mind, no one could stop her.
“You also want me to get married to him? I thought you understood my pain.”
I tried to talk but I bit my tongue instead.
She zipped up the suitcase and sighed.
“I'll travel out of this country and hide myself for some time till this whole thing will cool off.”
A part of me was in support of her travelling out. That's the only option left.
“My flight is ready. I'll be going in an hour.”
“Can I at least go with you to the airport?”
She nodded and a faint smile tugged at my lips.
I went forward to engulf her in a tight hug which lasted for a minute.
“Everything will be fine.” I assured, savoring the little moment with her.
___
A long silence fell between us. I sat beside her in the back seat as the drive to the airport continued.
We had managed to sneak out of the house to avoid any suspicion from our father.
“We should be there in about fifteen minutes.”
The husky voice of the driver came.
A tear slipped out of my eye and Bexley's hand moved to wipe it.
“It's okay. It's not like I'll be going forever.” She rolled her eyes and a small smile formed on my lips.
Then screeches.
The sound of tyres rubbing against the asphalt.
“On your knees!” Someone shouted from outside and panic shot through me.
Gunshots echoed in my ear as my hands began shaking. Bexley was already sweating as the car’s door was forcefully opened.
I fell on my knees with my eyes closed. Quietly wishing this wasn't true.
The gunshot we heard now, went straight to the driver's skull. I managed to see as I raised my head up.
We were dragged outside of the car to a nearby corner by the men as the grasses rustles with the rough drag.
“Pl…ease..” I pleaded. My voice, shaky.
Bexley held unto me as tears flowed out of her eyes.
“We are not here for your bland pleads. We're here for her.”
One of the men replied me and my heartbeat increased.
For my sister? Bexley? What business could she possibly have with them?
“Spare me please!” Bexley shook.
A cold metal was placed on my neck and I went still, my cries became soft muffles.
“If you keep shouting, then I'll have to blow your head off.”
Then, silence followed. The kind of silence that causes your heart to pound in fear.
I shut my eyes tightly, silently wishing they were gone.
But deep down, I know they can't be done. We can't be ambushed for nothing.
The next thing I heard was muffles from Bexley. I knelt helplessly as hot tears ran down my cheeks.
I could hear her struggling to break free from the unknown people.
The rough handling. The screams for help. The cries.
Then I felt the movement of a sharp pointed object on my neck.
That was the last thing I heard before everything blacked out.
____
Car horns. Bird chirping and the soft golden rays of the morning sun woke me up.
I struggled to comprehend where I was. My body laid stiff on the ground for what seemed like an hour. My eyes opened fully.
I closed it again. “This shouldn't be what I'm thinking.”
I sat up fully and I looked around. I'm on the f*****g grass beside the roadside, not on my bed. My head screamed.
“What am I doing here? Where am I?”
I stood up and checked myself out. There were no wounds, no bruises. Nothing. Confusion set in me. I could vividly remember myself in my father's house. In my room. How did I get here?
Cars were moving non-stop. People were passing by and here I am, in the middle of nowhere.
My confusion was interrupted by the dinging of my phone. I fished it out. The screen was broken and I could barely see anything.
“Where the hell are you and Bexley?” My father's yell came. More confusion.
Bexley was in her room as far as I can remember.
“Come home now.” He yelled and hung up. I stood on that spot. My legs rooted to the ground as confusion hit me harder.
What could have happened? My father has never yelled at me? Why now? What changed?
The questions hung in my throat, unanswered as I saw two men in black suits walking towards me.
They looked like security guards.
They finally reached me and I saw them bow.
I stood confused yet again. Did they mistook me for someone influential?
“N…no. You might have been mistaken.” I muttered at them.
“We are not mistaken Mrs Kingston. We're at the right place. We've been searching all over the city for you.”
Mrs Kingston? Now I'm sure they've mistaken me for someone else.
Because who the heck is Mrs Kingston?
Though, a part of me loved this whole thing. Being bowed to. Being addressed as Mrs. Being rich and having bodyguards.
“I'm Miss Redd. You're clearly at the wrong place.”
“Mr Redd is your father.” One of the guards said and my hand flew to my mouth in surprise.
“How did he know my father?” I blinked.
“You know him? You know where he lives? Please take me home.”
I pouted.
The first bodyguard whispered something to the other. I watched in confusion as they did.
I tried to eavesdrop but I couldn't hear anything.
“Ma'am. We'll explain to you on the way. Come with us.”
They led the way as I dragged my legs behind them. I was determined to know how he knew my father and where he lives.
Little did I know I was Mrs Kingston and today is my wedding.
