unspoken pressure

The next morning brought clouds. Not the gray kind that threatened rain, but the kind that made everything feel heavy. Emilia stared out the dorm window at the overcast sky, watching the bare branches sway. Something about it felt… unsettled. She scrolled through her phone. No new texts from Liam. Nothing unusual. But still, her stomach flipped. Zoey was gone, already off to her morning volunteer shift, and the silence in the room made Emilia feel too alone. Not lonely. Just overly aware. By mid-morning, she walked to the café near the art building. Liam was there, seated by the window with a steaming mug and his sketchbook open. He looked up and smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Hey,” she said, sliding into the seat across from him. “Hey.” He closed the sketchbook quickly. She tilted her head. “You hiding something?” “Just bad shading.” He forced a laugh. “And my messy handwriting.” She didn’t push it. Not yet. They drank in silence for a few minutes. The air between them didn’t feel tense, exactly—but there was a weight to it. “Is everything okay?” Emilia asked. Liam nodded too fast. “Yeah. Just… stuff.” “Your dad again?” He hesitated. “He called last night. Said I either switch back to finance or he stops paying tuition.” Emilia’s heart sank. “What are you going to do?” “I don’t know.” Liam ran a hand through his hair. “I can’t afford school without him. But I can’t go back to pretending to be someone I’m not.” She reached across the table and took his hand. “We’ll figure it out.” His eyes met hers—grateful, but distant. Like he was already trying to fix it alone. --- Later that afternoon, Chelsea posted a photo. A blurry party shot from last night. Liam in the background. A caption that read: "Some boys never change." Within an hour, the whispers had started again. Emilia stared at her phone, heart pounding. She hadn’t seen Liam talking to anyone else last night. He’d been with her. But the doubt crawled in anyway. Not because she didn’t trust him. But because she didn’t trust how much she wanted to. Her phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number. "He always comes back to me eventually. –C" Emilia’s chest tightened. --- That evening, Liam came to her dorm. “I didn’t go near Chelsea,” he said before she could even speak. “She must’ve taken that photo just to stir things up.” “I know,” Emilia said softly. “You don’t sound like you believe me.” “I do. I just… I’ve never had something this good. And it makes me wonder when it’s going to break.” Liam stepped forward. “Then let’s not let it break. Let’s talk. Always.” She nodded. “Even when it’s hard.” “Especially then.” And she knew—this wasn’t just some college fling. This was becoming something bigger. Something terrifying. Something real.
