The next morning, Maya woke up feeling lighter than she had in months.
For the first time, she didn't dread going to school.
She got dressed, packed her books, and walked downstairs.
“You look happy,” Daniel said.
Maya smiled. “I think I'm finally moving on.”
Daniel nodded. “Good. Just don't forget what you've learned.”
“I won't.”
But neither of them knew that someone was already waiting for her at school.
When Maya entered the classroom, she noticed that everyone was unusually quiet.
Lena rushed toward her.
“Maya, where were you yesterday after you left the principal's office?”
“Why?”
Lena looked nervous.
“Because something happened.”
“What happened?”
Before Lena could answer, David walked over.
“There was another note.”
Maya's smile disappeared.
“What kind of note?”
David handed her a folded piece of paper.
Maya opened it.
Her hands immediately began to shake.
YOU THINK IT'S OVER?
YOU DON'T KNOW THE WHOLE TRUTH.
She looked up.
“Who gave you this?”
“I found it inside your desk,” David replied.
Jason, who had been sitting across the room, stood up.
“Maya, I swear I didn't write that.”
Maya stared at him.
“I didn't say you did.”
Jason looked uncomfortable.
Kevin suddenly walked out of the classroom.
David noticed.
“Where is he going?”
Lena frowned. “That's strange.”
Maya followed them with her eyes.
Something wasn't right.
During lunch, Maya went to the library.
She needed somewhere quiet to think.
As she searched through an old shelf, a book fell to the floor.
Something slipped out from between its pages.
A photograph.
Maya picked it up.
Her heart stopped.
It showed Jason, Kevin…
and someone else.
Someone she knew.
Someone she never expected to see.
Lena.
Maya's breathing became unsteady.
“No…”
She stared at the photograph again.
Why was Lena with them?
And why had she never mentioned it?
Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her.
Maya turned.
Lena stood in the doorway.
Her face went pale when she saw the photograph.
“Maya…”
Maya slowly raised it.
“Tell me the truth.”
Lena didn't answer.
“Were you there that day?”
Lena's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
Maya stepped backward.
“You knew?”
“I wanted to tell you!”
“But you didn't!”
“I was scared!”
Maya's voice broke.
“You were my best friend.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you let me suffer?”
Lena began crying.
“Because I wasn't the one who started it.”
Maya froze.
“What do you mean?”
Lena looked toward the hallway.
“Jason wasn't the one who stole your work.”
Silence.
Maya stared at her.
“Then who did?”
Lena opened her mouth to answer.
Suddenly—
BANG!
The library door slammed shut.
Both girls jumped.
Someone was standing on the other side.
Maya grabbed Lena's hand.
“Who is that?”
No answer.
Then a voice came through the door.
“You should have left the past alone.”
Maya's blood ran cold.
Lena covered her mouth.
The footsteps slowly disappeared.
Maya looked at the photograph in her hand.
She had thought the truth had finally set her free.
Instead, she had discovered something much worse.
The betrayal wasn't over.
It had only just begun.
