In the summer, Adam knew, the nearby Serpentine would play host to crystal blue waters. He could picture the scores of students sitting on the lush greenery that surrounded the lake, soaking up the sun that would beat down on them from a virtually cloudless sky. Today, the waters looked grey, cold and uninviting. The trees that lined the track around the Serpentine seemed frail and slight; far removed from the full, bright spray that typified the Royal Park in midsummer. They stopped by one of the benches that lined the walkway, watching other couples slip by, wrapped in thick winter coats and buried in woollen hats.
