I walked up the stairs that lead to the six form college entrance and looked around, it had been more than half a century since I last pretended to be a teen in college and even though a lot of things seem to have changed the dynamic looks the same.
I was told to look after Cassie, so it makes most sense to try to get into the same classes as her, I just hope that she at least picked some interesting classes as there is nothing worse than being stuck in a class where I know all the answers, or where I have lived through the history they are talking about. In the supernatural world, I am not classed as being that old, however compared to humans, I am ancient.
When I got to the registration office, I was told to wait and have a seat. I know I could use my powers to speed this up but the less I use them the better. You never know who may be lurking around. If the past is anything to go by, there are a lot of supernatural beings pretending to be humans in college. I never saw the appeal. College will not teach you anything that actually matters in the outside world.
The actual world is a cruel place and if you do not look after yourself, you are likely to become someone's dinner or at least be taken advantage of. It is everyone for themselves. The only reason I am doing this is because Nick showed me that sometimes friendship is thicker than blood, and he alone considers me his brother, so when I got taken into another dimension, he risked his life to get me out of there, which is how he ended up being my master.
My thoughts got cut short as the reception lady tells me that I can go in and see the headmaster.
After a few minutes, I have made the headmaster believe that he has all the necessary paperwork that he needs to enrol me into college. Sometimes it is so easy to use mind control on people. A slight suggestion here and an imaginary memory there. It is all just temporary, and it will not leave any permanent scars, despite this I felt bad for using this ability sometimes as I do not like to interfere with free will, however in this instant it is for the greater good.
When I got out of the room, I looked down on my class schedule. The headmaster allocated me to all the same classes that Cassie is taking. Most of the classes did not seem too much of a bore, but it would have been great if she had played some sports. Why could Nick not have had a son that enjoys sports? That would have been more fun, besides, I killed at football, not literally, when I played it on my first college experience. Oh well, a mission is a mission; I am not meant to enjoy it.
While I was walking towards my locker, I saw a lot of teenagers walking around in the hallway. Their classes have likely finished, and they were heading towards the cafeteria for lunch. As I went to open my locker, someone bumped into me from behind and slammed me into the locker. I turned around and saw that it was a big, broad, muscly guy, with short ginger hair and a stern facial expression. Most likely someone from the rugby team.
"Watch it new guy." He yelled as he continued to walk like nothing had happened. Despite his build, I know I could easily take him, but he is not worth it, he is only a human after all. Me, I am a demon and if he only knew how effortlessly I could break him, he would not dare treat me like this. But I am not supposed to draw attention to myself, which means not using my powers, not even to teach him a lesson.
The day continued without anything interesting happening. I make it to my new class in the afternoon and take a seat in the back. I realised that Nick never told me what Cassie looked like. Maybe I need to go see him after college to make sure I know who I am supposed to look out for.
Just before the door closed, one of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen walked in. She was slightly taller than the average girl, with a nice build. She had long brown hair, a nice face, icing blue eyes and was wearing a pair of black jeans and a purple top. Her eyes scanned the classroom before she made her way towards the empty space next to me. When she came closer, I got a feel of her energy and realised that this must be Cassie, as the energy was very similar to Nicks.
"Hi, I'm Cassie, you must be new." She tells me as she sits down. All of a sudden, I do not regret taking this assignment, however I do not think Nick would be as happy about my feelings towards his daughter. I looked at Cassie and gave her a smile. "I'm Jax".
I was about to talk to her more when the teacher walked in and demanded everyone's attention. I did not remember much of the lesson as I spent most of the time trying to come up with excuses that I could use to spend more time with Cassie. One day and I have already broken Nick’s instructions not to get involved.
When the class finished, I made an attempt at small talk. Cassie asked me where I lived, and I realised that I have not actually thought things through. I did not even have a house in the area yet. I made up some vague place, explaining that I had only moved here yesterday and do not know the area very well. She offered to show me around and help me get to the next class as she realised that we were in the same one.
Walking around college with Cassie was very informative. A lot of people stopped and said hi, and others looked up from what they were doing. I guess she was one of the popular girls or maybe it was the demon glamour at work. It was hard to tell.
When we got to the new class, Cassie excused herself and went to sit with some of her friends. Some of them were glancing towards me, but it did not bother me much as I knew that if I really wanted to, I could figure out what they were saying, but to be honest it made no difference. My objectives were to keep Cassie safe and as far as I could tell, the other girls were all human. Besides, I would feel bad if I were to eavesdrop on their conversation.
I did not get another chance to talk to Cassie that day and as college finished, I realised that I needed to find myself a place to live, ideally a house that was near to both the college and Cassie's house.
I spent a few hours searching for a place, and eventually I found the perfect house. It was not that big but the land, or should I say forest, that surrounded the house was perfect. It gave me the privacy I needed as well as serving as an outer layer of protection.
After I had moved in, I put a protective spell around the house and garden. When that was done, I transformed myself into a bird and took to the sky. It was time to figure out where Cassie lived, so that I could cast a protective spell on her house too as I did not want anyone to come knocking on her door after sensing her energy.
The house was easy to spot, not by looks as it looked like a typical suburban detached brick house, with a small garden surrounding it. The reason that I could tell that it was the right house was because of Cassie's energy. As I am bound to Nick, I know his energy signature very well and as Cassie is a part of Nick, it was easy for me to detect hers. Maybe that was the reason Nick asked me to do this, as he knew I would be able to sense her energy.
