Addison had just returned home when her phone buzzed with a notification from Irene. The accompanying photo showed a massive ruby necklace.
Irene: [You always try to buy me off with these gaudy baubles when I'm upset. Fine, I'll forgive you this time.]
The comments section was flooded with vitriol, but Irene paid no attention, busy deleting criticisms and flaunting her relationship instead.
A: [You shameless homewrecker, why don't you die!]
Irene fired back: [In love, the one who isn't loved is the real outsider.]
Those words made Addison's heart lurch violently.
It was true. Steve didn't love her anymore. Once again, she'd been cast aside.
Addison had grown up depending solely on her grandmother. After her grandmother's death, she was sent to an orphanage. Years later, she was adopted, only to be abandoned again when her adoptive parents had their own child.
Her entire life had been marked by abandonment, and now even Steve, who'd once loved her most, had changed his heart.
With shaking hands, Addison retrieved a document from the safe.
It was a divorce agreement and property transfer contract, bearing Steve's signature and thumbprint.
He'd given her this agreement when they married to reassure her.
"Addison, don't worry. If I ever wrong you, sign this, and we'll divorce. All my assets will go to you. I'll leave with nothing. But that day will never come. We'll grow old together."
Addison rubbed her wedding ring absently, staring at the agreement as his promises echoed in her mind.
In the end, everything had changed. In the end, her trust had been betrayed.
Tears brimming in her eyes, she choked back a sob as she signed and sent the documents to her lawyer.
The instant she finished signing, Steve came rushing home.
He swept her into a tight embrace, murmuring apologetically, "Addison, we agreed I'd pick you up after work. When the housekeeper said you'd come home alone, I dropped everything and rushed back. But I was in such a hurry that I left your gift at the office. I'll give it to you tomorrow, alright?"
Addison's blood ran cold as she spotted the smudged lipstick on his collar.
If she hadn't found that account, and she hadn't learned the truth, she'd still be clueless, deceived by his lies.
'Left the gift at the office? What a lame excuse. More likely, he'd taken it to appease Irene instead.'
When Addison didn't press further, Steve relaxed with a smile.
"Addison, let's eat. I had the chef prepare your favorites."
At dinner, Steve absentmindedly served her while glued to his phone.
Occasionally, he'd glance up with an apologetic look, offering a half-hearted explanation. "I've been tied up with a major project lately. I need to stay on top of it."
Addison remained silent, but Steve completely missed the distress in her expression.
Staring at the sumptuous feast before her, Addison couldn't bring herself to eat. She lowered her head to check her phone. Irene had indeed posted again.
Irene: [Those who curse me are just jealous! Just watch—one call from me, and he'll drop everything to come running.]
Sure enough, the next second, Steve's phone rang.
"Hello? What? I'll be right there!"
After hanging up, he grabbed his coat and hurried toward the door.
"Addison, I'm sorry. There's an emergency at the company. I have to handle it personally. I can finish dinner with you."
No sooner had he spoken than the villa suddenly lost power, plunging everything into darkness.
Addison had suffered from claustrophobia since childhood and was terrified of the dark.
Every hair on her body stood up as she trembled slightly. Terrified beyond words, she called out to Steve in a shaky voice.
"Steve, I'm scared!"
Steve glanced at Addison in the darkness, then at his phone, before finally making up his mind to head out.
"Don't be afraid, Addison. I'll go find the property management. The power will be back soon." With that, he pushed open the door and stepped out into the darkness.
The sound of the slamming door echoed in the darkness as Addison sank into despair.
