Chapter 4

724 Words
Shortly after returning home, Steve called. Addison meant to hang up, but accidentally answered instead. "Addison, I only took her to the hospital because I was afraid something might happen to her and affect you. Don't read too much into it. As for that painting, don't worry. I'll handle it." Addison hung up the phone and threw all the photos and mementos she had cherished over the years with Steve into the fire, letting them burn to ashes. Steve walked in, followed by Irene. He noticed the fire basin in the courtyard and turned to Addison, puzzled. "Addison, what are you burning?" She didn't look up, answering flatly, "Nothing. Just some useless things." Steve stared at the raging flames, feeling a vague sense of unease. But seeing Addison's calm demeanor, he dismissed it as overthinking. "Addison, Irene wants to learn artifact restoration techniques from you. Since she's your colleague, I didn't refuse and brought her home." Hearing this, Addison snapped her head up to glare at Steve. She was stunned. First, Steve had foisted Irene into her office, and now he was bringing her home with such a sanctimonious excuse! "I don't want to see her. If she stays, I'm leaving!" Addison had already been itching to leave. She grabbed her bag and made for the door. Steve grabbed her arm, rushing to explain. "Addison, back then, it was we who sent Irene to prison and ruined her future. Now she's finally found a job and just wants to learn from you. Why do you insist on pushing her to the brink? You can't act like this." His words left Addison reeling. She never imagined Steve would say something so shameless. Back then, it was he who insisted on sending Irene to prison. Now, it was still him, defending Irene and blaming her. Irene stepped forward, her voice trembling as she addressed Addison. "Addison, I admire you so much. Why do you hate me like this? All I want is to learn from you... Is that wrong?" As she spoke, she grew agitated, clutching her stomach. Steve watched her anxiously. "Addison! We can't force her into a corner!" Addison turned around, her heart dead inside, eyes bloodshot as she fought back tears and glared at Steve. "Steve! It's you who's pushing me to the brink!" She unlocked her phone and shoved Irene's account in his face. "Tell me, what is this?" Steve went pale as he stared at the screen. After a long silence, he finally spoke. "Addison, don't blame me. I just want a child." Those words hurt more than anything else. "Steve, do you know why I can't have children? It's because I was poisoned while restoring your family relic for you! And now you betray me because of this?" Steve clung desperately to Addison, fearing she would leave. "Addison, once Irene gives birth, I'll send her away. The baby will be ours, and you'll be the mother. Wouldn't that be okay?" Hearing this, Irene clenched her dress tightly, remaining silent. She thought, 'Plenty of time. If I can secure the child today, then someday, I will marry into the Roberts family.' Having collected herself, Irene walked up to Addison and spoke with false generosity, "Addison, I'm not trying to take anything from you. Since you can't have children, we can't deny Steve a child either. After the baby is born, I'll leave forever and won't disturb your lives." Addison couldn't bear to listen any longer. It made her sick. She forcefully broke free from Steve's embrace, her voice cold and final. "Steve, since you've chosen her, then we..." Before she could finish, Steve panicked and seized her arm in panic. "It's just a child. It won't affect your position as Mrs. Roberts. Addison, wouldn't you love to hear a child call you Mother?" Addison let out a bitter laugh, her gaze filled with sorrow as she looked at him. "Steve, what if I say I don't agree?" Seeing the determination in her eyes, his heart ached, yet he couldn't bear to give up the child either. "Addison, you must realize that you can never have a child in this lifetime. This is how it's going to be. Once the baby is here, I know you'll love it." These words stabbed through Addison's heart like a dagger, leaving it raw and bleeding.
