Chapter 5

655 Words
Addison looked utterly spent as she walked back to her room in a daze. Her face was already wet with tears, which she absentmindedly wiped away. After drying her eyes, Addison took one last look at the bedroom she shared with Steve Roberts and began packing. Steve approached with a meal, speaking softly. "Addison, please don't be mad. Have something to eat first, okay?" Suddenly noticing her suitcase, he felt a flicker of confusion. "Why are you packing up?" Before she could answer, a phone call interrupted them. Steve answered, his voice tense with urgency. "What? Don't worry, I'm coming right now..." Hanging up, he gave Addison an apologetic look. "There's an emergency at work. I have to go. Make sure you eat." With that, he hurried toward the door. Addison had seen "Irene" flash on his screen but said nothing. Watching his disappearing figure, her heart grew numb. Nothing mattered now. When Steve called as she finished packing, Addison hung up without hesitation. Just as she stepped out, a maid rushed over. "Mrs. Roberts, Mr. Roberts just called. He said it's urgent, but couldn't get through to you." "We're done!" With that, Addison moved to walk past her. Steve rushed in. Without a word, he grabbed her hand and started pulling her toward the door. In his haste, he failed to notice the suitcase by Addison's door. Addison struggled fiercely to break free and snapped at him angrily, "Steve, let go of me! Where are you taking me?" Steve stopped and said urgently, "Addison, Professor Johnson invited us to dinner. It's about to begin. We have to hurry." Addison was completely baffled. She'd heard nothing about any dinner invitation from David Johnson, her mentor. But she remembered how much David had helped her during university. He was her lifelong mentor. Now that she was leaving the city permanently, she ought to see him one last time. When Addison entered the private room, she was shocked to find not only David but also Irene seated there. The moment she saw Irene, Addison's blood ran cold. She instantly realized this wasn't really a dinner invitation from David. It was obvious Steve had used her name to arrange a meeting between Irene and David. Yet in that moment, Addison couldn't show her displeasure. Biting back her fury, she plastered on a smile and took her seat. Over dinner, David Johnson looked at Irene with admiration, then turned to Addison with an apologetic expression. "Addison, you're my most outstanding student. But this time, the gold award has to go to Irene. Her academic paper is truly exceptional. I can't play favorites." A surge of unease washed over Addison as she turned to David, saying, "Professor, may I see her paper?" David handed it over. The moment she opened it, her eyes went wide with disbelief. Wasn't this the exact academic paper she had recently submitted? How could it be published under Irene's name? Addison turned to Steve. She knew there was no one else who could have made this happen. Steve noticed her gaze. He lowered his head guiltily and stayed silent. Not wanting to see her hard work stolen by Irene, Addison addressed David. "Professor, this paper isn't..." Before she could finish speaking, Steve spilled hot soup on her. He quickly pulled Addison up from the table, apologizing to David. "Professor, please excuse us. I'll take Addison to change." With that, he hurried her out. Outside, Addison shook off Steve's hand and confronted him. "Steve! How dare you give my paper to Irene!" "Addison, Irene's pregnant and can't overwork. You have so many papers. What does it matter if she gets one?" "It's my work! I'm reporting her!" Steve's voice turned cold. "Be a good girl and stop causing trouble. You know if I want to, your complaint won't go anywhere." Hearing this, Addison felt her entire body go cold, as if falling into an icy void.
