Chapter 6

525 Words
Addison's heart had sunk to its lowest point. Without another word, she turned to leave. Just then, David and Irene appeared. Irene looked at Addison ahead and feigned hesitation before speaking to David. "Professor, I'm sorry. My winning the gold medal has upset Addison." David Johnson believed her, his eyes filled with pity as he gazed at Addison. After all, she was his most prized student. He then approached Addison and spoke softly. "Addison, come to my place later. I have a gift for you. Sarah, my wife, is ill. You should see her." Unable to refuse, Addison followed David home with the others. Upon entering, David warmly served tea while Sarah sat dazed and silent in the corner. Addison looked at the woman with concern and asked, "Professor, Mrs. Johnson, she..." David shook his head and sighed. "Sarah has Alzheimer's. Most of the time, she isn't lucid." With that, he waved his hand and stood up. "Enough of this. Addison, Irene, come with me. Let me show you my newly invented restoration technique." Addison and Irene followed him to the study, where he demonstrated his innovation. Later, David excused himself to fetch a painting he wanted to give Addison. Alone in the study, Irene dropped her facade and sneered at Addison. "Addison, bet you never expected this. I stole your man and your gold medal." Suddenly, Sarah wandered in, still disoriented, mumbling as if searching for something. Seeing her confused state, Irene leaned close to Addison's ear and hissed, "I won't just take your academic standing and your place as Mrs. Roberts. I'll ruin you! I'll make sure you go to prison and suffer the way I did!" With that, she violently shoved Sarah, who struck her head against the table corner, blood pooling as she collapsed unconscious. Horrified, Addison rushed to check on her. Irene screamed first, drawing Steve and David, who arrived moments later. While Addison phoned for an ambulance, David knelt by his wife and cried out in anguish. "Sarah! What happened?" Irene pointed at Addison and exclaimed through tears, "Professor, Mrs. Johnson accidentally bumped into Addison, who got angry and pushed her. Addison must resent you for giving me the gold award!" Addison refused to let Irene keep lying about her. Furious, she fired back, "Professor, please believe me! It was Irene who pushed Mrs. Johnson. She's setting me up!" Overcome with grief, David hesitated, unsure whom to trust. Just then, the ambulance arrived and rushed Sarah to the hospital. Everyone waited anxiously outside the operating room. When the surgery finally ended, Sarah survived but was left permanently vegetative. Gazing at his unconscious wife on the hospital bed, David's face filled with sorrow and fury. He vowed to call the police, get to the truth, and send the real culprit to prison. At that moment, Steve, who had remained silent all this while, suddenly spoke up. "Professor, I'm sorry. It was Addison's fault. On her behalf, I apologize!" As soon as he spoke, the police stormed in. They marched up to Addison and said sternly, "Ms. Moore, you've been accused of intentional murder. You need to come with us now."
