CHAPTER 11: INTENSITY

The security room smelled faintly of dust and burnt coffee while Damien stood still. The glow from the surveillance monitors reflected in his eyes as footage looped across multiple screens, entrance, lobby, hallway, elevator. Nothing obvious which only made it worse. Nathan leaned against the console, arms folded, watching the same footage with quieter focus. “Play it again,” Damien said. The guard hesitated for half a second before rewinding. The timestamp rolled back. 11:42 PM. The hallway appeared. Empty and still then , a flicker. Nathan leaned forward slightly. “Pause.” The screen froze there and barely noticeable. A shadow crossing the far edge of the frame—too quick, too deliberate to be random. Damien’s jaw tightened. “Zoom.” The image sharpened slightly, but not enough.
