Chapter3

I forced myself to keep a straight face, masking the whirlwind of emotions raging inside me as Johnson drove us away from the hotel. The sting of betrayal burned hotter with every passing second, and my mind raced through memories of the life I’d shared with Jake a life that now felt like a cruel joke. “Madam?” Johnson’s voice broke through my haze. His concerned eyes met mine through the rearview mirror. “I’ll be fine,” I said firmly, though the tremor in my voice betrayed me. As the car pulled into the driveway of my home, I stepped out and entered the house that had once felt warm and inviting but now seemed cold and empty. I couldn’t allow myself to wallow in the pain there was work to do. Jake had taken too much from me, but I wasn’t about to let him take my dignity. The next morning, I stood in the kitchen nursing a cup of coffee when my phone buzzed on the counter. I glanced at the screen, surprised to see an unknown number calling. “Hello?” “Lara,” a familiar voice rasped. I froze. It was Jake. “Why are you calling me?” I asked icily, already irritated. “Because I made a mistake,” he said, his tone desperate. “Lara, I messed up, and I can’t let you go. Please, let’s talk face to face.” I laughed bitterly. “Jake, you weren’t thinking about mistakes when you were in bed with Ellie, were you?” His silence told me all I needed to know. “I’ll be sending someone to retrieve the signed divorce papers,” I said coolly, ending the call before he could respond. But deep down, I couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that this wasn’t the last I’d hear from him. As I stared at the phone in my hand, my mind spiraled into chaos. Lara was slipping away, and for the first time, I realized how much I needed her. Ellie stirred beside me, running her fingers along my arm. Her touch repulsed me now. “Jake, come back to bed,” she purred. I stood abruptly, grabbing my clothes. “Get out,” I snapped. Her expression shifted to one of disbelief. “What? Jake ” “I said, get out!” My voice thundered, making her flinch. She gathered her things and stormed out, but her parting words left a bitter taste in my mouth. “You’ll regret this, Jake. Trust me.” As the door slammed shut behind her, I sat on the edge of the bed, running a hand through my hair. For years, I’d taken Lara for granted, and now she was gone. But I wasn’t going to let her go without a fight. Two weeks passed, and I threw myself into work, determined to rebuild my life without Jake. But just as I started to find some semblance of peace, an unexpected visitor arrived at my office. Jake stood in the doorway, looking disheveled and guilt-ridden. “What are you doing here?” I demanded, keeping my tone cold. He stepped inside, closing the door behind him. “Lara, please. Just hear me out.” “I have nothing to say to you,” I replied, rising from my seat. “Lara, I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness,” he said, his voice breaking. “But I’m begging you to give me another chance. I’ll do whatever it takes.” Before I could respond, my assistant knocked on the door, interrupting us. “Mrs. Anderson, there’s someone here to see you.” “Send them away,” I said, annoyed. But when the door opened, my heart stopped. It was Ellie. She strode into the room, a smug smile on her face. “What the hell are you doing here?” Jake growled. Ellie ignored him, her gaze fixed on me. “I thought you’d like to know, Lara, that Jake and I have more in common than you think.” I folded my arms. “Spit it out, Ellie. I don’t have all day.” She placed a hand on her stomach, her smile widening. “I’m pregnant.” A stunned silence filled the room. My vision blurred, and my chest tightened as Jake looked at her in horror. But something about her demeanor felt off, and I couldn’t help but question if this was just another ploy to hurt me. The revelation opened a new chapter of chaos, and as the days went on, the truth behind Ellie’s claim began to unravel alongside Jake’s desperate attempts to win me back. Little did I know, another storm was brewing, one that would shake the foundations of everything I thought I knew about my marriage and the people around me. Ellie’s words hung in the air like a heavy fog. Pregnant? My stomach churned at the thought. Jake’s face was a mixture of confusion and dread, but I wasn’t about to let either of them see how much her claim affected me. “You’re lying,” I said coldly, forcing my voice to remain steady. Ellie smirked, her hand still resting on her stomach. “Oh, I assure you, I’m not. But if you don’t believe me, I’ll be happy to prove it. A doctor’s appointment, perhaps?” Jake stepped forward, his voice low and threatening. “Ellie, if this is some kind of sick game, I swear ” “Oh, Jake,” she interrupted, her tone mockingly sweet. “You really think I’d make something like this up?” I looked between them, my patience wearing thin. “I don’t care,” I said sharply, cutting off whatever excuse Jake was about to utter. “This is your mess to clean up, Jake. Congratulations on your new life.” Grabbing my bag, I strode past them both, my heart pounding. I wouldn’t give either of them the satisfaction of seeing me crumble. But as I stepped into my car, I couldn’t ignore the storm brewing inside me. Ellie’s announcement was a grenade, and the fallout was immediate. As Lara disappeared down the hallway, I turned to Ellie, fury boiling over. “What are you trying to pull here?” Ellie raised an eyebrow, feigning innocence. “What? You think I’d trap you? Come on, Jake, you’re better than that.” “Don’t play games with me, Ellie. If you’re lying ” She smirked, stepping closer. “You’ll what? Leave me? You already did, Jake. But now you don’t have a choice.” I clenched my fists, my mind racing. I needed to get to the bottom of this, and fast. Lara was slipping further away, and this situation was only making things worse. I thought I could escape the chaos by burying myself in work, but Jake was relentless. Over the next few days, he bombarded me with calls, texts, and even flowers cheap attempts to win me back. Then came the unexpected: a handwritten note slipped under my office door. Lara, I’m not giving up on us. Meet me tonight at the place where it all began. – Jake The place where it all began? He meant the little bistro where we’d had our first date. I crumpled the note and tossed it in the trash. I wasn’t going to let him manipulate me anymore. But as the day went on, my curiosity gnawed at me. Did I really want closure? Or was a part of me still holding on to what we’d once had? By the time the clock struck seven, I found myself standing outside the bistro, my emotions warring inside me. Jake was already there, sitting at the table by the window. His eyes lit up when he saw me, but I kept my expression neutral as I walked in and sat across from him. “What do you want, Jake?” I asked, cutting straight to the point. He leaned forward, his eyes filled with sincerity. “Lara, I know I’ve made mistakes terrible ones but I need you to know how much I regret losing you.” I scoffed. “You didn’t lose me, Jake. You threw me away.” His jaw tightened, and for a moment, he looked genuinely pained. “I know. And I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you if you let me.” Before I could respond, the sound of the bistro door opening drew my attention. My blood ran cold as Ellie walked in, her eyes locking on Jake and me. “What the hell is she doing here?” I demanded, standing up. Ellie smiled sweetly, holding up a piece of paper. “Oh, don’t mind me. I just thought you’d like to see this.” She placed the paper on the table, and my heart sank as I read the headline: “Billionaire Hotelier Jake Anderson Sued for Breach of Contract by Pregnant Mistress” “What is this?” Jake growled, snatching the paper. Ellie shrugged. “Just making sure the world knows the truth, Jake. You’re not the saint you’re pretending to be.” The room spun as the implications of Ellie’s actions sank in. She wasn’t just trying to destroy Jake she was dragging me down with him. But something didn’t add up. Why was Ellie so determined to ruin Jake? What was she really after? I didn’t have the answers yet, but one thing was certain: this wasn’t over.
