Oh s**t. Hayes's anger radiated from him in waves, a palpable tension that filled the air like an electric charge.
He lunged at Henry, a blur of fury and muscle. He punched him a few times, but Henry reflexively pushed him away.
The two alphas glared at each other, low growls emanating from their throats as they circled one another like predators sizing up their prey. "Stop it!" I interjected, stepping between them. My heart was pounding as I glared at Hayes. His jaw was tight, and his fists were clenched like stones at his sides.
"Why the hell are you attacking my guest?" I demanded, trying to keep my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through me.
"He was kissing you!" Hayes growled, his eyes blazing with jealousy. "So?" I shot back defiantly, crossing my arms tightly across my chest. "He's not allowed to kiss you because you don't belong to him. You belong to us!" he yelled, his voice ringing out with authority that drew the attention of a few curious servants nearby.
It didn't matter to him that they were watching. He declared our bond as mates. I know the topic of tomorrow morning's rumor. The gossipers will have a field day.
"I'm not yours. You didn't want me, and now I don't want you," I replied, surprising myself with my calm tone. My gaze flicked to Zylon, who stood silently yet watchfully off to the side.
The pointed glare I shot in his direction made him flinch. Hayes opened his mouth, possibly to argue, but the words died on his lips as I maintained my unwavering stare.
Guests began trickling out of the house, drawn by the commotion. Hayes let out a frustrated sigh, his growl reverberating before he turned abruptly to leave. Zylon held my gaze for a long moment. I held his gaze, refusing to back down. He whispered something to his gamma, and they walked away together, their figures retreating into the gathering shadows.
Henry stepped forward, gently reaching for my hand. I leaned into him, my heart still racing. He placed a reassuring hand on my back and guided me away from the prying eyes of the gossiping crowd and into the dimly lit garden. It smelled like flowers.
Tears welled in my eyes, and I turned to him, burying my face into his chest as the sobs overtook me. The tears flowed freely, an outpouring of emotions I hated to feel. They had no right to draw this response from me after everything they had done.
Henry rubbed comforting circles on my back, his voice a soothing murmur, "I'm sorry they hurt you."
Later that night, he took me home and tucked me in, only leaving once I succumbed to a deep, dreamless sleep.
The next day, whispers of my supposed cheating on two alphas spread through the pack like wildfire. It was absurd!
At dinner with my family, I could sense their eyes on me—sharp, probing, waiting for an explanation.
"I'm not dating them. I don't even like Hayes," I insisted, rolling my eyes and shoving a forkful of mashed potatoes into my mouth.
"Then why were two alphas fighting? And you were standing between them," my mom pressed, her brow furrowing with concern.
My grandmother scrutinized me with a piercing gaze while my grandfather carried on, seemingly indifferent.
In deep thought, Tate idly moved food around his plate before asking, "Are you mated to him?" His voice was slow and urgent. My breath caught in my throat as silence engulfed the table. "Rue, did he not want you?" The weight of his words hit me, heavy and deadly.
I didn't respond. My silence was the answer. Tate's eyes softened for a fleeting moment, then he slammed his palms on the table and stood up. "I'm going to kill him!" he roared, storming out through the door before anyone could intervene to prevent him from committing an act of treason. "I'll help you!" Granny shouted, rushing after him. I facepalmed, wishing I had stayed in my room instead of coming downstairs for dinner.
"I'll stop them," Grandpa sighed, shaking his head as he followed suit, muttering. I turned my attention back to my mom, struggling to hold back tears. "Please don't cry, Mom. I'm fine," I assured her, wrapping my arms around her shoulders.
I was fine... I thought, though uncertainty gnawed at me.
"You didn't deserve that, my girl." Her voice was thick with emotion. Those bastards made my mom cry. They would pay for this.
Later, after Mom had gone to bed, Tate and my grandparents entered the living room. I stood up. Tate pulled me into his strong arms.
"They admitted what happened to you. I'm sorry they did that, Sis," he said, his anger barely contained.
I missed training the next day. I didn't care if the alphas were furious. I had decided—I was leaving the pack for good.
'If they let you,' my wolf countered.
'They have to! They can't keep me here when I don't want to be,' I shouted in frustration.
'They want you to stay and be Luna. Rue, they'll do whatever they can,' she explained, excitement bubbling in her tone.
'I don't want to be Luna! I won't forgive them for what they did to me, Ria,' I declared firmly. My wolf sighed, retreating to the shadows of my mind. Why was she so quick to forget that they had cast me aside? If they wanted me back, it would only be because of my glow-up, not for who I was. I'm going to their alphas and demand the transfer. My phone pinged. It was a message from Henry. He wanted to collect a date debt owed to him. I smiled and texted back.
