"Two minutes," I countered, and turned to Begonia. "And I'm not fighting you,"
"Why not?" she sneered.
"You're no match for me," I said calmly.
"Just admit, Rue, you are still as weak as you were when you ran away from the pack. What a shame, the daughter of the greatest warrior to ever live is a f*****g loser!"
Annoyed, I forced a smile through my teeth. "Fine, let's start."
"Don't worry, I'll take it easy on you," she said patronizingly.
"Rue, be gentle," Tate cautioned. I rolled my eyes but nodded. That angered Begonia. She lunged at me furiously, throwing heavy punches. I dodged and evaded her attempts.
"So much for taking it easy," I mocked.
Begonia continued to struggle to land a punch or kick, but she couldn't. Having had enough of her antics, I counterattacked, landing hits on her while considering Tate's advice—being gentle but still enough to cause pain. Begonia was no match for me and couldn't last a minute. Soon, she was on the ground, unmoving.
I hadn't noticed just how silent the field had become. Everyone watched the brief fight in awe. Slow claps erupted until everyone joined in. Beth, Ael, and Tate were looking at me with smug grins, the unspoken words "told you so" written on Tate's face.
Mary and Cindy rushed onto the mat to help their friend. I looked at Mateo and smiled tightly. "Still want to teach me something?"
He shook his head, his eyes wide. I turned to my alphas; their eyebrows were slightly knitted. "Do you still think I need training?"
The following weeks, I attended training like everyone else. I was often late and received glares from Hayes, but I just rolled my eyes. Zylon seemed content to see me. He had tried to talk to me, but I shut it down. Every week, I had a new sparring partner, not just any wolf, but a top warrior from a different unit. I bested them every time. I noticed that at least one or two members of the advisory council had started watching me closely during my sparring sessions. I didn't like that at all.
Ael, Beth, and I were leaving training when Gamma Shane approached me. He smiled and, surprisingly, bowed his head.
"Gamma?"
"Good morning, Ruby. The alphas would like to see you in their office before you go home." I frowned, but something inside me lit up. Were they ready to discuss my transfer from this pack? I had been trying to talk to them about it for two weeks, but they kept saying they had important pack business to attend to. Even Tate couldn't help me with that.
"Okay," I said, bidding farewell to my friends and agreeing to meet them later, then I followed Shane. He walked slightly beside me, glancing at me occasionally.
"What?" I asked, bored.
"Why do you want to leave this pack?" His question took me aback. I wasn't expecting it.
"I just want to," I replied.
"But this is your home. Your father was born here, you were too, and your family and friends are here." There was an edge of sadness in his voice, but maybe I was mistaken. Why would he be sad? He and I were never friends, having spoken to each other no more than three times. The only time he had intervened was when he defended me from Begonia and Mary, who were bullying me. Speaking of them, they looked at me with animosity ever since I beat Begonia.
"I don't want to be here for reasons I can't discuss," I snapped. Shane raised his eyebrows, and then realization dawned on his face. Yes, I was still under command and not allowed to disclose my bond with the alphas. Everyone in the pack knew we were mated, but no one spoke about it openly.
We reached the Alpha office building. It was the first time I had entered the renowned Hawthorne Holding. Inc. It was sleek and modern. Made of glass and white marble.
When we entered the corner office on the top floor, I found the alphas waiting for me. Zylon stood against the tall window, staring out, but stiffened when he sensed my presence. He's dressed in an elegant black suit, white shirt, and black tie. Hayes sat behind the mahogany desk, his expression unreadable as he looked at me, wearing only a black shirt with sleeves rolled to his elbows, no suit, no tie.
Breathe, Rue, breathe. My brother was also there, and I moved to his side. He kissed my temple.
"You called me," I said, breaking the long silence. Zylon turned and offered me a kind, slight smile that made my heart flutter.
"We did," Hayes replied, standing from his seat and approaching me. I took a step back, almost hiding behind my brother.
"Back off," Tate warned in a low voice.
"She's our mate," Zylon said, sounding annoyed—not with me or the mate bond, but at my brother's protective nature.
"Whom you didn't want. Whom you alpha commanded not to speak about the bond, whom you cheated on, causing pain when you were with Begonia and Mary," Tate growled.
"And for that, we are sorry," Zylon murmured, though his eyes remained on Tate.
"Why did you call me here, Alphas? Is it about my transfer request?" I asked.
"No, we called you to discuss the fact that you are a chosen warrior wolf and didn't inform us," Hayes said, his gaze intense.
I met his eyes, noting the golden flecks in them.' Lovely,' I snapped out of my daze.
"That information has nothing to do with you or the alpha administration."
"Oh, but it does. You're a chosen warrior wolf, and we have every right to know," Zylon retorted, his voice quiet but with an undercurrent of venom. Oh s**t, they found out. How did they know?
