As I reached home, I threw myself onto the couch, exhausted from training and the discussion we had in the alpha's office. After wallowing for what felt like an eternity, I finally picked myself up and headed for a shower. Once I was ready, I wore my bikini and threw on a cover-up.
When I arrived at the beach, I smiled as the cool air hit my skin. I immediately spotted Ael, Joe, and Beth. Beth was already in her bikini, lounging on a chair while a few guys admired her. Joe and Ael were chatting and smiling; the two seemed very close.
'Huh,' Ria murmured.
'What?' I asked her.
'Nothing,' she sighed.
"Hey, guys!" I waved and ran toward them. We exchanged pleasantries, and I took off the lacy cover-up I was wearing over my red two-piece. A group of guys playing volleyball looked our way, murmuring in appreciation. I settled into the beach chair next to Beth, and Joe handed me a drink.
"Thank you," I smiled, lowering my sunglasses to meet his gaze. "I missed Los Angeles climate,"
"And I needed this," Beth sighed.
"How are things going with you and Vincent Baek?" I asked. Vinny was her boyfriend. She had a faraway look in her eyes, but eventually nodded.
"We're doing okay now. Viny was distant a few weeks ago, but we're fine now, I think," she murmured. I opened my mouth to speak when, suddenly, a volleyball hit her in the face. We gasped and jumped up. A trio of girls in swimsuits giggled in the distance.
"Oops, we're sorry!" one of them said, though she was clearly hiding a smile. They had done it on purpose.
"Sorry for yourself, you b***h” Beth shouted, giving them the finger. I grabbed the ball and deflated it with my claws before throwing it back at them; it struck the slender ginger girl right in the face.
They approached us, clearly ready for a fight, but we smirked, knowing they were no match for us. One of the girls shoved me, and I pushed her back, causing her to fall onto the sand.
"Want to fight?" I asked, leaning closer to meet her gaze.
The brunette lunged at Beth, but in one swift move, she swept her off her feet. The other girl gasped, preparing to jump at us, but the volleyball players ran over to intervene.
"Ladies, hold your pearls!" one of the guys, who had been ogling us, positioned himself between us. The ginger dusted herself off and wrapped her arms around his waist, gazing up at him.
"Babe, they destroyed our ball and insulted us!" she whined. I cringed at her annoying voice.
"Babe?" he said, pulling away from her. "I didn't know we were dating."
Beth and I laughed while the girl turned red with embarrassment. The guy then gave Beth a flirtatious look, but she just sneered at him.
"Do you play volleyball?" one of the boys asked me. He was tall, handsome, and had a lanky physique, but muscular, like Ael. I nodded, and he tossed the ball to me. I caught it, and he flashed a lovely smile. I returned the ball. The girls glared at me, but they didn't faze me.
Joe and Ael returned from wherever they had wandered off. "What happened?" Joe asked.
"We're going to play volleyball," Beth said, striding toward the volleyball net, and the three mean girls followed.
"You're playing against us," one of them declared. We looked at the boys, who shrugged, and we nodded, taking our positions.
"I'm Jason, but you can call me Jay," the handsome guy said, extending his hand to me. I shook it and introduced myself.
Playing volleyball and winning against those snobby girls became the highlight of my day. We spent the rest of the afternoon with Jay and basketball player friends. They even invited us to a bonfire with loud music, drinks, and dancing. Jay and I danced closely together, although a nagging feeling in my stomach tightened with our proximity. I ignored it, convincing myself it was just the beer.
Beth was having a great time, shaking her ass surrounded by a group of people as they clapped and cheered. Ael and Joe chatted with a couple of boys.
"Thank you for inviting us," I told Jay as we strolled along the beach.
"You're fun," he replied.
"Where are those girls you were with?" I asked. "I hope they didn't leave because of us."
He chuckled. "Oh, they weren't with us. They just came over and latched on. I should be thanking you for saving us from them."
We smiled at each other, and everything felt simple... easy. Jay was a basketball player who had been drafted into the NBA at the age of sixteen.
We talked all night, and when we were ready to head home, he walked me to my car, kissed my cheek, and opened the door for me.
"Are you sure you can drive in this state?" he asked again. I rolled my eyes and nodded firmly. The alcohol was slowly wearing off.
"I can handle it. Don't worry," I assured him.
"We're camping nearby. I can arrange tents for you and your friends," he glanced at Ael's Ford Mustang parked behind my car.
"We'll be fine," I insisted.
He nodded and closed the door. I started the engine and drove off, watching him wave at me with a little smile as my Beetle merged onto the main road, followed by Ael's car.
I looked back at Jay through the rearview mirror, but I saw a flash of golden eyes —the same eyes I had seen near my bedroom window a few weeks ago. My heart palpitated in my chest.
'Ria, did you see that?' I asked.
'Yes,'
Maybe we were wrong. I convinced myself and faced the road, but unfortunately for me, something dark hit my windshield with a thud, and I screamed, losing control of the car.
