And, with that he led Garner along the rooftops, from building to building. When they came to a ten-foot gap, they leaped this easily, and continued from there. The physical action of such movement was something Garner reveled in. They traveled like that—over rooftops, up fire-escapes, and down pipes and waterspouts, only occasionally moving along the ground, mostly in alleyways. When they crossed streets, they were hardly noticed. It was delightful. * * * * Finally, they arrived at the roof of a building where they sat on the low wall that ran round the perimeter, letting their legs hang over a ten-floor drop to the street below. Garner took a simple pleasure in the enjoyment of such a position; ordinarily he never would have done this, would not have felt safe. Now, it felt freeing.
