And, with that he led Garner along the rooftops, from building to building. When they came to a ten-foot gap, they leaped this easily, and continued from there. The physical action of such movement was something Garner reveled in. They traveled like that—over rooftops, up fire-escapes, and down pipes and waterspouts, only occasionally moving along the ground, mostly in alleyways. When they crossed streets, they were hardly noticed. It was delightful.

Finally, they arrived at the roof of a building where they sat on the low wall that ran round the perimeter, letting their legs hang over a ten-floor drop to the street below. Garner took a simple pleasure in the enjoyment of such a position; ordinarily he never would have done this, would not have felt safe.
Now, it felt freeing.
