Our Little Princess

Chapter 6 . . . Lina I blinked hard, trying to get a picture of where I was and for a second, I thought I saw four angelic figures hovering over me. There were muffled noises nearby and the scrapes of a chair leg. Ha. Then again, luck and I had always been polar opposites, it turned out to be the four guys who somehow always managed to mess with my peace. “She's waking up.” Someone said, low and cautious. My eyes fluttered open, and the infirmary ceiling welcomed me first. I winced, trying to sit upright, then I saw the four of them, each wearing a different expression. Azrael looked like he was forced to be here, he was the furthest from me. Kaiza leaned against the foot of the bed, with his diamond necklace glinting over his half unbuttoned shirt, while Blake was by the window, his hands in his pocket, staring out like he didn't want to look at me and Darien sat near the bed, his arm crossed tightly over his chest. “Our little princess is up,” Kaiza said causally, with his eyes flickering over me. “Kinda dramatic for your first week.” “What… happened?” I said, trying to adjust myself but my muscle complained immediately. “You passed out.” Darien said flatly. “Collapsed actually,” Kaiza cut in. “You were arguing with Darien. I guess the stress got to you.” “I wasn't arguing.” I frowned. “You weren't arguing.” Kaiza said with a shrug. “Can we not?” Darien said, rising to his feet. “Then why are you here?” I blinked at him, then the others. The silence that followed stretched too long. “Protocol,” Blake said eventually. “We’re supposed to… stay close, like a temporary supervision till someone comes. Whatever.” My chest tightened. I remembered the burning sensation when they marked me. The way the boys had looked at me like something had gone wrong in their bones. “Don't worry, you’re not hurt,” Darien added. “The nurse said your vitals were just unstable, like your body’s out of sync.” “With what?” I muttered, more to myself than anyone else. No one answered. Did I say something out of line? Kaiza sighed and peeled an apple with a small knife he’d probably stolen from the dining hall. “So what’s the deal with you, Haven?” I didn’t respond. At this point, I could say Kai was sent after me to torment me. He then gestured vaguely. “You fall into our training room, get yourself marked by not one but four Alphas, drop to the floor in front of Darien, and now your heartbeat apparently reacts to us. We’re all dying to know… what exactly are you?” I flinched. “I’m just a student.” “No,” Blake said, finally turning around. His eyes were sharp and unreadable. “You’re not.” “Wait, why am I being interrogated? I'm just recovering and equally as clueless as you all.” “Yeah sure.” Kaiza said. Before I could speak, the door opened, and Janna stepped inside. She looked flawless as usual—hair in a slick ponytail, blouse crisp, lips painted a soft mauve. But her eyes? It was tired and on edge. “You’re awake,” she said, too calm. “Yeah,” I muttered. “Unfortunately.” Janna smiled tightly and moved closer to the bed. “I brought your things.” She placed a folded sweater and my small purple shoulder bag on the table. “Thanks.” I said softly, rubbing my hands together. “Yeah sure.” She smiled. I exhaled deeply “So remind me again, you passed out in the hallway?” She said, making herself comfortable on the bed.” “Yup, I think it's my low iron striking again.” I said heavily. “Low iron is such a hassle to deal with. My elder sister battles with one and it's exhausting.” I smiled at her, still wondering if I asked for the last piece of information. Before I could reply, Azrael's expression twisted– darker than before. As if it hadn't been terrifying already. “Tch” He muttered, walking off with his hands shoved in his pocket. “Is he always like that?” I asked, turning to Janna. “For as long as I can remember, but he seems… a little approachable when he's with Kai and his friends.” Pretty sure she had forgotten what ‘approachable’ meant. “He hates crowded places,” Blake chimed in. “He only came because Darien had forced him to.” I turned to Darien, who was busy playing games on his phone. The nurse came in a few minutes later with a little tray in her hands. She placed it on the little counter close to me. “You're up now.” I raised my brows up while staring at her. Was I not supposed to? “Yeah, I'm.” I finally said. “You're low on iron, take these medications for the next one week.” She said, handing me a little white bag. I nodded and took it. “Well, you are good to go. If you have any challenges, do let me know.” She said, walking towards the door. Darien extended his hands towards me, with palm open, signaling me to get up. I slowly stood and picked up the sweater Janna dropped beside me, tugging it on before grabbing my bag. My legs felt weak, but I managed. Darien didn’t say anything, just turned and walked out. Blake followed with a lazy wave, and Kaiza tossed me the apple he'd barely touched. “Eat something,” he said, not looking back. I hesitated before taking a bite. I walked beside Janna down the hall. She talked a little, but I barely listened. When we reached the hallway that split toward the dorms, she gave my arm a gentle squeeze. “I’ll check in later, okay?” “Okay,” I said. She turned left. I turned right. The dorm building was quiet, just like I had liked it. I got to my room and opened the door. The lights were off, and I stepped inside and shut the door behind me. I kicked off my shoes and dropped my bag on the bed. But something tugged at my attention. It wasn’t something new, I just never thought to look —until now.
