Miss Halley

Chapter 9 . . . Lina The next morning came by a breeze. I woke up fifteen minutes late with my hair messy and a strained muscle. It was my damn sleeping position and I still didn't want to change it. I sluggishly got up from bed and went to the mirror to see my reflection. I sure looked like I had exchanged a few blows in my sleep. I turned to Janna's bedside and she had just woken up too. Phew I wasn't the only one late for class. With a heavy sigh, I reluctantly walked to the bathroom to have my bath. I spent about thirty minutes in the showers despite being behind schedule and still contemplating if I should go for classes or not. Because why did I really have to prepare for class? I wished we had online classes here. These people probably wouldn't see my ass till I graduate from this school. Eventually, I got out of the shower and headed to the room. Janna was already prepared and set for the day. And I was still here, wrapped in a towel and water dripping from my body. I missed when I was still excited about school. I walked to the closet and brought out my uniform. I wore a navy blue blazer, a white collared shirt, a strapped tie, and a plain pleated skirt. I took my black bag from the wall hanger, and stuffed it with my essentials before leaving the room. “See you in class.” Janna said, when my hand was right on the door knob. “We are in the same class?” I asked with brows arched. “Yeah, why do you sound surprised?” “I actually haven't seen you in class since I started. And you take a long time before coming back.” “Ohhh, I decided to stay some days back. And as for the other, I have extra classes after school, so after that I usually hang out with my friends before returning.” “Make sense.” I pouted. “See ya.” I smiled and gave the lazy two finger click. I left for the dining room. I turned on my phone and I had just ten minutes left. No way I was skipping breakfast for it. Though it was my fault for waking up late. I shook my head and increased my steps. I finally got to the dining room. It was peaceful and scanty. Well I wasn't expecting it to be flooded with people. There were about 3 people in line and just four people sitting. Guess they weren't ditching their breakfasts too. We were served pancakes and milky coffee. I took one bite and nearly melted. The pancake was warm, soft, and just the right kind of fluffy. The butter slid across the top, and the syrup? Don’t get me started. It was sweet, sticky, and criminally perfect. Waking up for this everyday didn’t seem like a bad idea again. Then I noticed him staring at me like I was doing something strange. I gave him a long side-eye over the rim of my cup. Yes, I’m drinking coffee. Yes, I look good doing it. Mind your business. I stood and dropped my tray off at the counter when I was done. ***** I got to class two minutes late, and luckily our teacher wasn't yet there. The class was buzzing and mixed with laughter, which was only expected. I myself was happy. I walked to my seat, passing Brienna and sat down. She turned to me. “Heyy, what's up?” She said removing her earpiece. “Is it weird that I'm already tired for the day,” I asked, slowly slouching. “Teehee, I bet everyone feels the same way lol.” She said. “I suppose.” Her eyes wavered. “I heard you passed out yesterday, sorry for not checking up on you sooner.” “Yeah it's fine— wait how did you find out?” “I saw you and your guys yesterday.” She smirked. “What guys?” That's when it clicked. She was referring to Darien and the guys. “Ohh—” “Yeahhhh.” She moved her fingers and that's when I noticed a blue ring. It was so pretty and enchanting. I stared at it for a while, before noticing Brienna's facial expression. She frowned and pressed her lips into a thin line. “I love your ring, it's so pretty.” I said, still staring at it. “Thank you. I've had it on for a while now. It's a present from my mom.” She said, adjusting her fingers. “Ohh– that's cool.” The classroom door opened and the room quieted almost immediately. Our Literature teacher, Miss Halley, walked in with her usual no-nonsense expression and her heels clicking like a ticking bomb. “Pardon my lateness, something urgent came up." "Books out. Page 132. Let's begin.” I took out my textbook, flipping lazily while she launched into a dramatic reading of Macbeth, adding so much passion you'd think she starred in the original cast. Beside me, Brienna was scribbling notes like her life depended on it. I glanced at her page. It was meat, color-coded with borderline art. Meanwhile, my notes..... let's not even talk about it. Miss Halley went on for what felt like seven hours. My stomach was already writing its own tragic soliloquy. By the time class ended, students were already stretching and packing like they’d been held hostage. I was halfway out of my seat when Brienna’s friend... I think her name was Gigi? — popped beside us. “Let’s go eat. I’m starving,” she said dramatically, flinging her bag over one shoulder. “Yeah, let’s go,” Brienna said quickly, but I noticed how her smile faltered just a little. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and didn't say anything else. “You coming too?” Gigi asked me, tilting her head. “Sure,” I replied, trying not to sound like I’d rather eat with the janitor. We walked together through the hallway, Gigi talking non-stop about cafeteria drama and some guy who ate six burgers. I swear I could feel Brienna quietly shrinking beside her, nodding, but not really adding much. I just followed, hoping lunch would be quiet, edible, and drama-free. Wishful thinking, I know.
