Chapter 14

Skyler’s POV

I’ve never seen anyone eat, I mean inhale, so many pancakes. I even started second guessing if I made enough pancakes. “It’s good to know you like pancakes. I’ll be sure to make more in the future.” I laughed still impressed at the amount of pancakes Kanto ate.

He just laughed. “Sorry werewolves eat a lot. So what are you going to do today?”

“Well the school year is over so I don’t have work. But I started seeing this guy recently and since he’s a werewolf I should probably start getting into better shape if I want to keep up with him.”

“But you’re perfect the way you are.” Kanto said gulping down the last of his pancakes.

“Sir, I may look like I’m in good shape but I’m definitely not. I get winded walking up the stairs sometimes, I’ll probably just go for a run and stuff so I can get stronger. Then I’ll probably go to the store and get more food, because supposedly werewolves eat a lot.” Kanto started to take out his wallet. “Put that away! I’m not taking any of your money especially after you’ve paid for some much food already.”

“But you just said I’m the one eating all your food.” Guilt was written all over his face.

“How about we make a deal? I’ll take up all of your time, you get to eat all of my food. Sound good?” I put my hand out.

Kanto chuckled but still shook my hand “Fine, deal. But you have to tell me why you think you need to get stronger.”

I didn’t want to answer his question, I didn’t want him to think I was helpless. “Well, if I keep seeing you, I have to keep up with super strength and speed so I should probably be the best I can be.” I hoped he would buy that but all he did was raise his eyebrows as if waiting for more. “And. . . I don’t want to be helpless again.” I took a deep breath before continuing. “That night I felt absolutely powerless, if you didn’t show up. . . They’d. . . I’d. . . I’d probably be. . .”

Tears started pushing their way to my eyes. Kanto got up from his chair and kneeled by my side putting both hands on my face. He looked at me with those hazel eyes I’ve grown to be so fond of. “You are not helpless, there were 4 grown men. You managed to hold them off long enough for me to get there. That’s not someone who’s powerless.”

“Still, I don’t want to be in a situation like that again. So I’m going to get stronger.” I forced a smile on my face, I could tell that Kanto’s new smile was also forced. We sat there for a moment in the quiet. Then he closed his eyes and let out a sigh.

“They need me to come into work now.” Kanto said as he got up.

“How do you know?” I just realized, he hasn’t used his phone since he got to my apartment. But has been supposedly communicating with workers.

“Werewolf can communicate with other pack members through our minds within a certain distance, we call it a mind-link.” He straightened up his jacket and ran a hand through his now dry brown hair. “Are you sure you don’t want me to stay?”

The puppy dog eyes Kanto was giving me made it extremely difficult for me to be responsible. “No, you should go to work. You don’t want to get in trouble.”

“I don’t want you to be alone.” Kanto stared at his shoes, this big werewolf was more like a giant puppy.

“I’ll be fine. I’m going to stay in very populated areas when I run and go to the store and I’ll make sure to be back at my apartment before dark.” I went over and wrapped my arms around his waist putting my head on his chest. I was getting used to our 1 foot height difference. He wrapped his arms around me too and bent down a little to put his head on top of mine. I could tell he really didn’t want to let go. “If you’re that worried, you can come back after you finished work.”

“Really?” Kanto did a terrible job at trying to hide his excitement.

I laughed “Yes, now go. The sooner you get to work the sooner you’ll be back.”

He bent down and kissed me “I’m definitely finishing work early.”

“No you are going to work like a good boss who’s a good role model for his employees. You are not ditching work early just because you got a new girlfriend.” I pried him off of me and pushed him towards the door. “Now off you go.”

I opened the door, pulled Kanto down to my height to give him one last kiss then attempted to shove him out the door before we got distracted again. Kanto obviously accepted and left on his own, he’s a giant of all muscle there’s no way I could involuntarily move him. I closed the door behind him and took a moment to process the last 2 days. I was attacked, almost died, rescued, learned about the existence of supernatural beings, supposedly found my soulmate, also had s*x with said soulmate, had a sleepover with him, just shoved him out the door and invited him to come back.

So just typical boy drama stuff, no big deal. I laughed at the craziness that has become my life. At least the school year is done. I almost forgot about my meeting with Mr. Rodriguez on Thursday. At least most of my injuries seem like they’ll be better by then. Oh well can’t freak out about that yet. I have to find my running shoes, I know I haven’t worn them in a while but they have to be around here somewhere. I eventually find my running shoes, switch my clothes to leggings and a tank top, tie my hair back, pick my music and head out for my run. As I leave my apartment building I feel the warm summer sun on my face. I smile to myself and start my jog.

Kanto’s POV

“So I guess everything turned out alright?” Brett asked me the minute I sat down behind my desk. He had a huge grin on his face with pestering eyes.

“She hasn’t rejected me yet so that’s a start.” I smiled back thinking about my day with Skyler yesterday.

“I can tell, you’re in an unusually good mood. Usually you’re a little more grumpy.” I glared at Brett for a moment but he didn’t stop. “Alpha, is that a hickey I see on your neck.”

I glance at the mirror on the shelves to my left but I don’t see anything on my neck. Brett starts laughing even more.

Why did you let that i***t be Beta. Zenith didn’t like being teased either. He was already annoyed that we had to come to the office.

“Why did I ever let you be Beta?” I asked Zenith’s question.

“Ah Alpha, calm down. I’m just happy you finally found your mate. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you happy man.” Brett was sincere in his words, I knew he meant well.

I sighed and went back to business. “So what of the rogue reports.”

Brett’s face went serious. “Well as we said there was a large group of rogues spotted to the north. But they looked more like they were scouting the area instead of their usual of just going for the attack.”

“Are you sure they were rogues?”

“Absolutely, you could smell the group’s stench. But as we got closer to approach them, the ran away. Again, not normal behavior.” Brett was right, rogues usually lose their sense of logical thought so they just go around attacking. Them retreating isn’t normal. Brett continued “We think it might be some of his men.”

“If that’s true, we need to up our border protection. I’ll contact Jack and make sure to increase our patrols and to train more warriors to be guards. If he plans to attack we need to be ready.” That’s when my mind went to Skyler. Now that I have a mate, she’ll be a target. “What about the protection I ordered for Skyler?”

“We sent Colton to watch her.” I growled at Brett’s answer, but he already knew what I was thinking. “Colton is one of the best warriors we have, I know he’s unmated, but he’ll keep her safe and keep her a secret.”

“And no one else knows about Skyler other than you, Jack and Colton, correct?”

“That is correct, Alpha. No one else should know about the future Luna. But I don’t know how long you can keep her a secret, especially if you don’t stay at the pack house at night.” Brett made a good point, I’m almost always at the pack house if I’m in the area. The pack might get suspicious soon, especially since Brett left for work this morning with a bag of my clothes.

There was a knock at the door. “Come in.” I shouted.

Ilianna came in. Ilianna’s black hair was pinned to one side, her face was heavily covered with makeup. She wore a black blazer over a mint green skin tight dress, she also wore black heels that made a clicking noise with every step.

“Welcome back, Mr. Boterea?” She said as seductively as possible. I could hear Brett groan in disgust while Iliana completely ignored him. “The Morrison meeting will be in conference room 2b in 15 minutes. Would you like me to take notes?”

“Yes, thank you. Brett do you have the blueprints for the meeting?”

“They’re in my office, I’ll grab them and meet you in the conference room.” Brett slightly bowed his head at me, gave a glare to Iliana then walked out of my office.

“He seems moodier than ever.” She snickered at the door to my office. “Yesterday without you here was such torture. Urgent business?”

“Yes.” I didn’t want anyone to know about Skyler yet. I trusted Iliana and she was there when I found Skyler but she also was the councils choice for my mate if I didn’t find my mate. I don’t how the council will react to Skyler being human so I have to wait. I got up from my desk, grabbed the Morrison file, my notebook and some pens. I started to walk away from my desk when I was stopped by Iliana.

“Oh wait Kanto, you can’t go to a meeting looking like that.” Before I could argue, Iliana was straightening my tie, then she slowly started to brush off the front of my jacket.

I grabbed both of her hands and growled. “Stop.” I said in my Alpha voice.

“Im sorry Alpha.” She bowed her head and took a step to the side. “I just wanted to make sure you look presentable for the meeting. You are the face of this company.”

She scurried towards the door taking a brief stop in the doorway. “You may want to touch up your hair, it looks a bit tousled.” Then she disappeared from the door frame.

I let out a long sigh. Has she always been this annoying. Zenith growled in my head.

It’s probably because we found our mate. Maybe every she-wolf is annoying now. Or maybe this is what Brett has been talking about.

We need to go back to our mate. It’s been too long. Zenith had no patience.

It’s only been 30 minutes. I tried to reason with my wolf. And you heard her earlier, we have to work a regular day or else we can’t go back over.

Zenith pouted but didn’t say anything more. I ran a hand through my hair and heading out of my office towards the meeting. I really hope the Morrison’s aren’t exceptionally annoying today.

Wishful thinking, after 2 excruciating hours the meeting was finally over. After going back and forth about motion sensors and how long the driveway should be, everything was finally agreed upon.

“Iliana do you mind sending a copy of the notes to everyone that was here?” I said politely because the Morrison’s were still within earshot.

“Of course Mr. Boterea.” Iliana wink at me and went towards the copier room.

I swear I never want to sit in a room with Mr. Morrison or Mrs. Morrison ever again. Brett mind-linked me while forcing a happy face as we headed towards the elevator.

Obviously you haven’t had the pleasure of sitting down with the whole Morrison family. I mind-linked back remembering my first ever meeting with the whole family.

Never in my life have I been so happy to do a site inspection. Brett wasn’t there for that meeting and he will always thank me for it.

“So how are you holding up?” We we’re in the elevator now, and since it was just us, we didn’t need to mind-link anymore.

“What do you mean?”

“How are you holding up without your mate?” He said with a sly smug look on his face.

“I would leave now if I could, but she said I can’t come back until I finish a full day of work.” I was miserable, I missed Skyler, how do people get anything done without their mate?

“Woah, tough Alpha being put in his place by a tiny human. I definitely need to take this woman out for dinner.” Brett chuckled. I growled a warning at him, I couldn’t tell if it was because of the disrespect or because of his trying to take my mate. “Calm down Kanto, she’s all yours.”

The elevator binged when we got to our floor. “Let me know if you need anything, Mr. Boterea.” He walked in the direction of his office while I went to mine. When I got there I closed the doors and slumped in the chair behind my desk for a moment.

I opened the top drawer of my desk can saw a piece of paper folded with my name spelled on the front. I grabbed the paper and began to unfold it, $20 dropped out of the paper and into my lap. There was a note written on the paper, it read:

Thank you for the hot pockets and ice cream. Here’s $20, hopefully that will cover it. If it’s too much give the extra to the security guard who you kept freaking me out about even though I’m guessing he’s your employee Mr. Boterea. I hope to spend more time with you soon, after I know the truth of your position at this business.

That sneaky vixen must have put this in here when I was making the hot pockets on our first date.

Our mate is clever. Can we go see her now? Zenith was making this day even more difficult to bare. Of course I wanted to leave but I knew I had to work. But just because I can’t go back yet doesn’t mean I can’t text her.

-Can I come back yet? I texted and eagerly waited for her reply.

-Hahaha no, the work day just started. If you come over early I’ll be mad, you need to work. She responded not too long after my text.

-This day is unbearable. How am I going to make it until 5?

-You’ll think of a way. She texted. But then quickly followed it up with another text.

-Or you can just think of me as I’m about to get naked and take a long shower. Soaking myself and rubbing soap all over my body.

I instantly felt my pants get tight as I got hard thinking about my beautiful mate in her shower. I needed to leave now.

-Now I’m definitely leaving early.

-If you leave now, you’ll have to sleep at your own place tonight.

I groaned to myself, what is this woman doing to me?

-Fine, I’ll wait. I texted back hating myself for it.

-Good boy, I’ll see you later. She texted back.

I have no clue how I’m supposed to focus now after that text. She’s pure mischief in a 5’6” frame of beauty, which makes her dangerous. Seriously how am I supposed to get stuff done when she is playing evil tricks on my mind. A knock on the door interrupted my thoughts, and my b***r instantly disappeared when Iliana walked into the room.

“Here are a copy of the notes for you, Mr. Boterea.” She handed me the stack of papers but didn’t leave. “Is everything alright Kanto? You seem different, I’m worried about you.”

“I’m fine, but thank you for your concern.” I said with a straight face and serious tone, hoping she would take the hint.

She didn’t, instead she leaned against the desk making sure her cleavage was in full view. I don’t know if that was her intention but Zenith didn’t appreciate it. “We’ve been friends a long time and you know that I just want what’s best for you and the pack. Even the council knows that. So what’s going on?”

“Again, I’m fine but thank you for your concern.” I said again coming off even more frustrated.

“Well, I’m always here to help. With whatever you need help with, Alpha.” She shot a quick look down at my crotch before smiling and turning away, closing the door behind her on her way out making it very clear why she thought I was frustrated. I audibly groaned. Can it be 5 o’clock yet?

This job thing you have is annoying, let’s go back to Skyler. Zenith never cared much for this job, definitely not as much as he cared about being Alpha.

I told you we have to stay here. This day is going to be rough if he keeps pestering me. Can you stop asking to go back, I don’t want to be here either but we have to work.

Fine, but I get to greet Skyler first.

Alright but only for 5 minutes and you have to promise you’ll behave yourself. If it would stop Zenith from asking, I’ll let him take control for a moment.

Deal! I could feel Zenith’s joy, at least now I could try to focus. When I see her I’m going to make her gasp for breath. I’m going to scoop her up and—“

I forced Zenith to the back of my mind, I knew if he started describing everything he wanted to do I know I wouldn’t be able to contain my desire to do the same.

I sighed looking at the clock on the wall. This is going to be a long day.
