Chapter 5

Kanto’s POV

You’re an i***t if you think this is going to work. You should just take our mate home and mark her already. Zenith growled in my head, he clearly isn’t the romantic type. I just rolled my eyes and tried to push him to the back of my mind. I needed to focus on the fine details in order to make my plan succeed.

“Kanto, can you slow down a bit? I’m not wearing my running clothes.” I was so focused on my plan that I didn’t notice how fast I was walking. I instantly stopped and felt guilty for basically dragging Skyler behind me. Skyler took a moment to try to catch her breath, it’s tough keeping a fast pace with a werewolf but somehow she managed to do it. I could still feel the electricity of pleasure shooting through where my hand was holding hers. I wanted more, Zenith wanted more. Before I knew it, with my free hand I was moving some of Skyler’s loose strands of hair behind her ear. I don’t know if it was from the running or if it was from this action but Skyler’s face was red. Her eyes were wide with surprise and I could tell she was holding her breath. I could also feel Zenith trying to push himself to the surface.

She better get used to us touching her because I definitely want to touch our mate more.

Zenith, can you calm down? If you keep acting like this, we are going to do something too fast and it might scare her off. We need to take things slowly, she’s a human and doesn’t know about werewolves or the supernatural. We need to give her time. I could feel Zenith grumble, it’s hard trying to reason with a horny wolf, especially one that has waiting 10 years for his mate.

You’re going to mess it up with your slow and steady approach. Just let me out for a bit and I’ll make her ours. Zenith was still trying to push forward but he knew I was right.

Come on Zen, after 15 years, don’t you trust me? I could feel Zenith sigh and eye-roll before putting a wall up and retreating to the back of my mind. It was a joke about the trust thing but it still hurt that after being together since I was 13 he didn’t have any faith in me. I let out a sigh and went back to focusing on Skyler.

“Are you feeling better?” I bent down a bit so I could be closer to her eye level. I’m about a whole foot taller than her, I don’t want her to strain her neck just to look at me. Goddess she’s so cute.

“Yea I’ll be alright, just didn’t expect to move so fast. It’s hard to run in a dress and ballet flats.” She gave me a sweet smile that relieved some of my guilt. “Um Kanto?”

“Yea?”

“Where are we going?”

I try my best to duplicate the evil look I saw Skyler give me earlier “I can’t tell you, it’s a surprise.” I wiggle my eyebrows up to lighten the mods a bit more.

She lets out a small giggle, making me relax even more. “Well Mr. Surprise, just remember that we just met a couple hours ago and you are asking me to blindly follow you late at night.” Skyler raised her eyebrows up and looked up at me with a knowing smirk. I knew she was just trying to joke around with me but she did make a valid point.

“Ah but we aren’t strangers anymore. We’ve had a great conversation the whole way to the pizza place. I think I can trust you.” Skyler let out a sigh and shook her head while rolling her eyes. Her smirk turned back into a full smile. “Besides I promise I won’t murder you until after the third date.”

“After the third date? Wow you have a lot of patience. Maybe you should have became the teacher.” We both stared at each other for a second before breaking into laughter. It’s a good thing it’s late, anyone who saw us or heard us would think we were psycho.

“Shall we continue?” I let go of Skyler’s hand to offer it to her again. She hesitated for a second.

See you already ruined it, weirdo. Zenith mumbled but before I could tell him off Skyler grabbed my hand again. Sparks of pleasure shot through my arm. That was enough to quiet Zenith for a bit.

“So I know you’re a teacher and why you became a teacher. What else should I know about you?” I wanted to ask her what she meant about her mom but I didn’t want to return to such a depressing topic, I wanted to keep seeing her smile.

“Hmmm, I don’t know. Teaching takes up a big chunk of my time. On the weekends I try to go hiking but with the end of the school year it’s been a bit tricky to go.”

“Where do you like to go hiking?” The city may be large but the farther away you go the more wooded the area gets.

“I like to go to the forest up northeast of the city, they have some good trails and the forest are just so beautiful that I always find myself there when I hike.” Another coincidence that confused me on why Skyler and I haven’t met yet. My pack’s lands are about an hour or more away from the city in that direction. I pass through that forest every time I go to and from the city. I could tell by Skyler’s expression that she really did enjoy hiking out there, she felt the same way that I do about the forest. Werewolves feel deeply connected to nature so we try to live in heavily forested areas. Some of the wolves in my pack never leave the pack lands because they hate the city. I would stay in that forest for the rest of my life if I could, but as Alpha and CEO of Boterea & Buildings, I can’t afford that luxury.

“I hope to get back into hiking now that school is over, but I have to finish up the festival first.” I could hear the excitement in her voice as she talked about her summer plans. “Maybe if you like hiking, you can come with me sometime?”

Thank the Moon Goddess for wolf hearing, she said that last part so softly I almost didn’t hear it. “I would love to go hiking with you.” Skyler’s face turned red again, obviously she hoped I didn’t hear that last part but she smiled back at me, making me think she was happy I did.

“What about you, what do you like to do in your free time?” Skyler gave me a big smile as she asked the question.

I’d like to do you in my free time, little mate. Zenith tried to push his way forward again. He seriously needs to calm down, he’s right but he needs to tone it down. Especially when we are in public.

Skyler scrunched her eyebrows at me as if she saw something weird on my face. “Hey is there something wrong with your eyes? I swear they changed colors.”

Damn it Zenith, you need to calm the f**k down. I yelled at him in my mind and blocked him from my mind.

“Uh, no nothing is wrong. Maybe it just the street lights or the bad lighting.” I really hope she buys that.

“Yea it must be the lights. Sorry you must think I’m crazy now.” Skyler face look sad as she removed her hand from mine to run it through her hair. I felt bad because my eyes most likely did change colors but I can’t tell her why yet.

“Hey, I don’t think your crazy. It’s not a big deal.” I tried to console her but I feel so guilty for not telling her the truth. We walked for a bit more and I could see the glow of our first stop. “You didn’t answer my other question though, what do you like to do when you aren’t working?”

“Hey look we made it to our first stop.”

Skyler shifted her gaze from me to the neon sign about the store. “A convenience store?”

“What’s your opinion on Hot Pockets?”

“Hot Pockets are pizza burritos. I used to eat them a lot in college, they were a delicious quick bite to eat. But I haven’t eaten one since those days.”

“Good. You go pick 2 flavors of ice cream while I get the Hot Pockets.”

Skyler stood there with squinty eyes and suspicion written all over her face.

“I promised not to murder you until after our third date, trust me just a little.” This broke Skyler’s face into a smile. She nodded her head and we walked into the small store.

I let go of her hand so she could go get the ice cream but the minute I did I instantly regretted it. I’ve never felt this way about anyone before, I wanted to go back to my mate and wrap her in my arms. Wow, big, bad Alpha wolf, one of the most powerful and feared leaders in the country and here you are falling head over heels for a woman you meet a couple hours ago. 24 hours ago I was making fun of Brett for how he behaved with his mate, I get him now.

I grabbed 2 boxes of Hot Pockets before going to find Skyler. I walked to the isle she was in following the scent of papayas and strawberries, her scent alone was enough to drive me wild. I spotted her but before walking to her I took a moment to take in my gorgeous mate. Her floral dress was still flowing from her waist down. My gaze continued up and caught some strands of her dirty blonde hair coming out of her long braid, but somehow it was still beautiful. I noticed her right arm was crossed under her breasts with her left elbow resting on the right wrist. I hate to admit that my gaze was stuck there for a moment as her dress perfectly fit to her upper body and her breast above her right arm was pulling my attention. I shook my head and followed her left arm up to where her thumb was under her chin and her other 4 fingers were resting on her lips. I never knew I could be so jealous of fingers before.

I was about to start moving down the isle towards her when I saw her cheeks turn red. She shifted both hands to the sides of her face, closed her eyes and let out a deep sigh. Then she shook her head as if to remove whatever thought that formed there. I wonder what she could be thinking about? But then I caught a slightly different scent from her and that started to make Zenith go crazy again. Was she aroused?

Little mate is definitely thinking about us right now. Zenith said way too confidently. I had to take a moment to calm myself and my cocky wolf before I walked up to Skyler. I made my footsteps loud so she wouldn’t be startled, but she still shuttered a little when I spoke to her again.

“Hey, did you pick 2 flavors?”

Her face got a little red again before she cleared her throat. “Um, yeah, I mean almost.” I don’t know what thoughts she had before but I definitely caught her off guard by coming down this isle. “I’m stuck between chocolate chip cookie dough, mint cookie or Neapolitan ice cream. Which ones would you like?”

“I like all 3, we could get all 3 if you want?”

“Oh no I don’t think I could handle Hot Pockets and 3 different ice creams. How about just cookie dough and mint cookie?”

“Works for me.” She smiled at me before she opened the freezer door. The cool air felt nice, it definitely help cool down Zenith for a brief moment. “Ready?”

Skyler nodded and headed to the cashier. She put the ice cream on the counter and started to rummage through her bag.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m getting my wallet so I can pay for the ice cream.” She said in a as-matter-of-fact way.

I let out a loud, deep, sarcastic laugh at her saying that. “No I’m paying for the ice cream and the Hot Pockets.”

I could tell she was ready to argue but I swiped my card before she could. I received a glare for that, which made me laugh again. The cashier just rolled his eyes at me before letting his gaze fall on Skyler. A creepy smile came across his face and he was staring at her for too long. No one stares at my mate but me. I let out a low growl to shock him back to work. “The microwave is by the slushy machine if you need it.” He forced out as he looked at me and I stared down at him.

“Thank you!” Skyler said in a chipper voice as she grabbed the bag of our food and heading towards where the cashier said.

“Nope, we are microwaving the food somewhere else.” I grabbed the bag from her hand and replaced it with my hand. I quickly walked her out of the store but not before I shot one last look of warning at the cashier.

“Then how are we going to eat the Hot Pockets?” She stopped out front of the store. The same suspicious look that Skyler has before we entered the store was back.

“We have another stop to make, but don’t worry it’s only a couple blocks away.”

“…ok…” She said slowly and slowly began to walk in the direction my arm was pulling her. Then another look came across her face, one that seemed more sly. “Again, you still haven’t answered my question. What do you do in your free time?”

I chuckled at my mate’s memory and her thinking I was trying to avoid the question. “I usually don’t have much free time. But if I do get the chance I like to go for runs or go swimming.” I usually do these things in my wolf form and let Zenith take control but she doesn’t need to know that yet.

“Ah another outdoor activities person. That’s good to know. Do you prefer cats or dogs?”

“Excuse me ma’am. I do believe it is my turn to ask a question.” I said trying to sound offended. “But since you’re so beautiful, I’ll let it slide.”

This made Skyler’s face turn bright red again and her eyes go wide. I gave her a victorious smile before answering her question. “I’m more of a dog person.” For obvious reasons. “What about you?”

“I like them both, but I prefer dogs.”

We kept going back and forth asking each other the more generic questions as we walked. I did want to ask some more personal questions but I didn’t want to push it too early.

I guess Skyler wasn’t paying attention to our route because she looked shocked when we were close to our destination. “We are about to be at the school, where are we going?”

I guess I couldn’t keep it a secret anymore. “We are going to the Boterea building so you can see the city skyline for yourself.”

Skyler stopped walking which pulled me back a little. “Are you crazy?!? We can’t go there at this time of night! You’ll get fired!”

“It’s not a big deal. Besides I thought you wanted to see the view?” I gave her a small pout of disappointment to coax her into going.

“I do but I don’t want to get arrested for trespassing.” She let go of my hand to cross her arms, I knew she wasn’t joking this time.

“Hey, it’s going to be fine. I’m a pretty high ranking position at the business so it’ll be ok.” I went up to her and took my hand to move some strands of hair away from her face.

“Are you sure you won’t get in trouble?”

I smiled knowing her curiosity about the view was winning her over.

“Yes, we’ll be fine. Besides the CEO and I are pretty close, so it won’t be an issue.”

I offered my hand to her again, she hesitated but still took it in hers. “Ok but if I get arrested and fired from my job for this, I’ll be coming after you.”

I got close to her and whispered in her ear “Good. I want you to always be coming for me.”

It didn’t take long for her cheeks to go red again and her jaw drop. I was really enjoying making her blush, I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it. She didn’t wait for me to start walking and pulled me in the direction of the building. She didn’t lose steam either, she marched me to the building in silence still with red appearing on the tops of her ears. She went up to the door and gave it a tug, but it was locked. But before she could start trying to talk her way out of it I got my keys out and unlocked the door.

“After you, beautiful.” I gestured for her to enter first with a slight bow.

“You are a troublemaker, Kanto.”

She doesn’t even know the trouble we want to get into with her. I wanted to argue with Zenith but he was right.
