Chapter 31

Kanto’s POV

Once we arrived at dinner, I informed Skyler, Brett, Jack, Andrea and Leilani about the Luna announcement ceremony.

“I thought you already announced me as your Luna?” Skyler asked.

“I announced your existence so the pack would know I found my mate. At the Luna announcement ceremony I’ll official introduce you as the future Luna of the pack.” I explained.

“It’s like one big party to introduce you to all the pack members, so they can see you and get to know you.” Leilani further explained.

“Also other high ranking pack members attend too.” Brett said with a mouth full of food.

“Gross B, don’t talk with your mouth full.” Andrea scolded. “But my mate’s right. It’s really just a big party all about you.”

“And who gets to plan this amazingly grand party?” Skyler asked, I could tell she was worried about the answer.

“Usually the future Luna plans it, but I’ll bet my mom has been planning the official Luna ceremony since I turned 18.” Skyler laughed as well as the rest of the table.

“Well if Luna Maribelle can help me, then I have nothing to fear.” Skyler sighed with relief.

“Of course you have nothing to fear. Leilani and I will help too, I know how great you are at planning parties.” Andrea teased.

“Psh.” Skyler crossed her arms and tilted her head up to the ceiling. “Everyone said they had a great time once we replaced my burnt food with delivered pizza.”

I couldn’t help but laugh at the thought of my little mate trying to cook fancy food. Skyler shoved me lightly with a serious expression on her face until she couldn’t hold back her own laughter. Dinner continued on with laughter and good conversation, we talked as if we had been like this all our lives. As dinner came to an end, I knew it was back to business.

Brett, Jack. I mind-linked the two. Meet in my office in 10 minutes.

They both nodded. I turned to Skyler, who gave me a bright smile. “I have a meeting with Brett and Jack after dinner, but I’m all yours after that.”

Skyler nodded. “Alright sounds like a plan.” I kissed her cheek and got up to go to my office. I stopped by a table where Colton and Dustin were sitting. Without talking both of them got up and walked towards the table I was just at. Then I went towards one of the nearby sitting rooms to find the person I was looking for. I walked to the back of the room to see the patio doors wide open, my mother was sitting on the patio swing staring at the garden. This was my mom’s favorite place to relax, especially at this time since it had a great view of the sunset.

“I had a feeling you were looking for me.” My mom said without opening her eyes taking in the last rays of sunlight. “How may I help you?”

“On Wednesday, Skyler is meeting the elder council.” My mom opened her eyes and sat up straight giving me her full attention. “Next Saturday will be the Luna announcement ceremony. I was wondering if you would be able to help Skyler plan for it.”

“Of course I’ll help Skyler with the ceremony.” My mother stood up with a smile, but that smile disappeared. “But is she prepared for the wrath of the elder council. I’ve mentioned before that they won’t take well to her being human.”

“Honestly, I don’t know but when she agreed to go she seemed very determined on standing her ground. I’m afraid it might be too much for her.”

“I believe Skyler will be able to handle it. But I think you need to have a plan in case you need to step in.” I nodded in agreement. “And you definitely need to have something plan for after because you both will need to release some stress.”

I chuckled remembering how pissed Zenith and I were after the last council meeting. “Alright I’ll plan accordingly. Thank you mom. I have to go I have another meeting to attend to.” I hugged my mom then headed upstairs.

Can we go to mate instead. Zenith pleaded as he caught the scent of Skyler in the hallway.

No we have work to do. If we don’t find out who’s behind these attacks, we won’t be able to protect Skyler. Zenith focused in again determined to protect our mate. My office door was already open, meaning Brett and Jack were already in there.

“Alright what did you find.” I said as I sat in my chair behind my desk. When I looked up at them I noticed an additional person there. “Skyler what are you doing here?”

“You said that you were having a meeting with Brett and Jack in your office. And if I’m correct this is about the Steelridge pack or about who shoved me down the stairs or both. So it is a continuation of the other meeting thus I’m here.” Skyler gave me a big toothy grin feeling proud of her logic. “Am I wrong?”

“Ok but only because you need to tell me more about what you know.” I negotiated, Skyler just nodded with that same grin on her face. Brett and Jack were smirking at the short exchange “Alright, what is the update on the phone?”

“I’m afraid I don’t have a lot of good news for you Alpha.” Jack began. “We have a list of potential suspects who could have possibly bought the phone, but the list is quite extensive. We would have more luck working off the other events. Jasmine’s alibi checks out, there were multiple people who spotted her at the time the event would occur and she has receipts from the places she was shopping. Luna can you remember anything else about the person who pushed you down the stairs?”

Skyler looked down. “Sorry but no. All I remember was that she was in great shape, had bleach blonde hair that went down to her shoulder blades and was taller than me. Her voice sounded a bit wobbly and pitchy, which makes me think she faked how she spoke. She was strong though, strong enough for me to go through the railing.” Unfortunately Skyler’s information really didn’t give us much to go on.

“It’s alright Skyler, we’ll find them.” I reassured my mate.

“Oh wait!” Skyler exclaimed. “It was 3:17 when I left the bedroom to look for the game lounge. So maybe we can find out who was unaccounted for from 3:00-4:00pm.”

I looked at Jack who knew what to do.

Our mate is a genius. Zenith and I were both a little shocked at Skyler’s logic skills. Everyone was right, she’s going to run circles around us.

“What about the prisoner downstairs.” I said while firmly grasping onto the ends of my chair.

“He is serving a life sentence at a maximum security prison.” Brett said. “We’ve traced back as far as we could with the information he eventually gave up, but we mostly came up with dead ends. But many of those dead ends are too similar to the dead ends we’ve hit with the Steelridge Pack. So I believe it was them, but we’d need to investigate more.”

“Have you been keeping an eye on the Beta?” I asked.

“Yes, he’s frequented the pawn shop a couple times now. But something odd, is that we never see him leave. We have seen him walk in but never walk out. This is why I haven’t sent anyone into the shop, I think a supernatural being must own it.”

“Good call, I don’t want anyone going in there until I say so. But continue to keep an eye on it. Maybe Varus is there.” I looked over to Skyler who was texting on her phone. “Skyler?”

“Sorry, the night I went out and ran into them I didn’t go alone. My friend Sally was with me and danced with the Beta for some time. I was texting her if she got his number.”

“Alpha, if she got his number…” Jack began.

“We will be able to track it.” I finished. My Luna had a big smile on her face, I did too. I was proud that this woman was my mate. My admiration was cut short though.

Kanto, is Skyler with you? My mother mind-linked me.

Yes she is.

Would she be able to join me. With her ceremony coming up we have many things we need to cover. She explained.

I’ll ask if she wants to join you, but she’s been adamant about being here. As helpful as she has been, I thought it would be important for her to help with the Luna ceremony. Also I think my mom would be able to help her prepare for the council meeting.

“Skyler, that’s a brilliant idea.” I said. “Now, if you don’t mind, Luna Maribelle is looking for you.”

“Are you sure you don’t need anything else from me?” She said concerned.

“No we can handle everything else from here. Also we can talk about the council meeting later.”

At that Skyler smiled before getting up from her chair. She bowed her head slightly towards me before leaving the room.

“Alpha Stephen Porter of the Blue Forest has asked for assistance with a small clan of vampires that have been causing problems in their territory.” I saw Jack tense up at the mention of vampires, Brett gave a quick glance over while trying not to be obvious. “He asked me to lend some of our warriors. I agreed to help them. I want to send 5 warriors that have experience with vampires and 5 that are strong enough to handle themselves even without experience. The warriors with experience should help train the Blue Forest pack warriors so if issues arise in the future, they will be prepare. The other 5 should train as well so we can have more experienced fighters.”

“It’s been a while since we’ve had to deal with vampires.” Brett said to me but I could tell he was trying to be aware of Jack who was silent with rage.

“I know, but we still have warriors who remember how to fight them. Originally I was going to ask Jack to pick the warriors, but if—“

“I can do it Alpha.” Jack grumbled still clearly angry.

“Alright, then I’ll leave that responsibility to you.” I said. “Instruct them to observe the situation fight before engaging, I would prefer to avoid escalating this to a violent fight.” Jack nodded at my request and the room returned to silence.

“Kanto, you know the council is going to give you guys a hard time on Wednesday, right?” Brett said cautiously.

Zenith growled at the thought of how the last meeting went. “I know.”

“I don’t go to many of those meetings anymore.” Jack started, he hasn’t been to one of these meeting in years due to a past disagreement with them. “But you should mention everything that Luna Skyler suggested here. Those were great ideas and will definitely help us take down the Steelridge pack.”

“They are just going to use their prejudice against humans as their reason why she shouldn’t be Luna.” Brett added.

I let out a sigh after thinking for a moment. “Skyler is very capable and can be Luna. I know I can handle this meeting, I just hope she can.”

Wednesday came quicker than I expected. I spent all of Tuesday at the office in the city working on contracts. When I got back home, I was so busy with pack matters I barely got to spend time with my beautiful mate. I woke up with her in my arms and felt at peace. She usually wakes up before me so I’ve come to savior these moments when I can admire her sleeping. I combed my hand through her long dirty blonde hair. I studied the cute trail of freckles across her nose and cheeks. I found myself licking my lips when I looked at her soft, pink and plump lips.

I don’t know how much longer I will be able to hold off from marking little mate. Zenith said with lust but also a hint of concern.

If it were up to me, we would be marked and mated already. I replied honestly. But I don’t want to push her into something she doesn’t want.

Does little mate…not…like us? My big tough wolf was scared. Everything about this was unusual for him, werewolves usually complete the mating ritual within the first 24 hours of meeting. This waiting goes against all of the werewolf instincts and behaviors we’ve learned.

No.The human world doesn’t have mate-bonds, so this situation is weird for Skyler. I tried to reason.

But what if little mate never wants to be mates with us? Zenith asked. I never really considered that possibility. I could feel Zenith tense up as I sat there contemplating. I looked down at my little mate in my arms and smiled.

She’s not going to leave us. I said with more certainty. Remember what she said the other night. If she were going to leave, she wouldn’t have said those thing. Also I can feel it, more than the mate-bond pulling us to her. I can feel true feelings growing between us. The mate bond makes it easy for us to fall in love instantly, even if we’ve never met the person before. That is one of the things I admired about human relationships, they get to truly know someone before committing to each other.

Skyler started to move a in my arms as Zenith calmed down a bit more. She took a deep breath before turning her head up to me. Her eyes were still droopy but she managed to give me a sleepy smile. “Well hello there handsome.”

I chuckled before lifting my head to kiss her forehead. “Good morning my beautiful mate. Sleep well?”

“Mhmm.” She said while snuggling back into my chest. We stayed there snuggled for a bit before Skyler spoke again. “I guess we should get ready for the council meeting.”

“Nah, those old wolves can wait.” I squeezed her tighter.

She managed to push herself off me but I could tell she was reluctant to do so. “No, I can’t give them another reason to hate me.” She got out of the bed and walked towards the closet.

“Hey you’re not limping anymore. How’s your leg?”

“I feel great. My leg is almost completely healed and it’s all thanks to you and your supernatural healing abilities. Human healing rates got nothing on those.” She smiled while flashing her leg at me. She was right you could barely see the cut on her leg, the stitches were already gone. But I didn’t focus on the leg for long. Zenith let out a low growl to signal what was on his mind. “No we can’t fool around, we need to get ready.”

I plopped back down on the bed as Skyler headed into the closet. I took a deep breath to calm myself and Zenith down before going to the bathroom to take a quick shower. When I got out Skyler was in front of the sink trying to put on her makeup with a fogged up mirror.

“You could have used the mirror in the bedroom.”

“True but I liked my view of the shower.” She said without batting an eye. How was I not supposed to react.

I picked her up and pinned her against the wall, planting my lips on her. I pushed my tongue into her mouth. She let out a moan which only made me hungrier for her. I let my hand roam her body, she started to do the same. But before we could go any further she started to push me back.

“You’re getting me wet.” She said, I looked down at her outfit which was now soaked since I didn’t dry off properly.

I took more steps back. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to ruin your clothes.”

“Oh yea, the clothes were getting wet too.” Holy s**t this woman will be the end of me. Zenith wanted to pounce and mate her right against the wall but Skyler scurried away before we could carry on. “It’s ok I wasn’t a big fan of this outfit anyways. You better change if we want go be on time.”

I stood in the bathroom for a moment with a hard-on contemplating what just happened. I hope you’re not worried that she’ll leave anymore. I teased Zenith. He was still in a slight state of shock.

I chuckled before walking to the closet. Skyler gave me a sly smile when she passed me on her way back to the bathroom. I shook my head and refocused on getting ready. I pick out a white button up, long sleeve shirt, a vest and dark navy blue pants. I combed my hair back and a bit to the side.

I was buttoning up the ends of my sleeves when Skyler stepped out of the bathroom. She was wearing a navy blue tight dress, the sleeves flowed off her shoulder loosely. The top part of her dress was more lose but the bottom part clung tightly to her body. As she turned to close the door behind her I saw how low the open back went. Her hair was slightly curly at the bottom and pinned on one side of her head. My mate really could look good in everything and anything.

“Wow you look handsome.” She said doing the same thing I was doing to her which was eyeing her up and down.

“How did I get a mate that’s a genius and breathtaking?” I took a couple steps closer to her.

She shrugged her shoulders. “Maybe you’re just lucky.” She looped her arm around mine. “Shall we?”

I smiled down at her and escorted her out of the room against Zenith’s will. We walked down towards the meeting room arm in arm. Skyler had a smile on her face but her grip got tighter and her breathing got shaky as we got closer. We finally made it to the two wooden doors.

I paused before we went in. I stepped in front of Skyler, leaned down and gave her a kiss. I felt her body relax a bit. “You can do this. And no matter what they say, I choose you. You are my mate and I’m going to love you no matter what.” She closed her eyes and nodded, taking more deep breaths. “You ready?”

When she opened her eyes again, the fear that was there was gone. It was replaced with confidence. “Let’s do this.”

I smiled and resumed my position by her side, a place I never hope to leave. I pushed the doors open ready to face this challenge with my mate by my side.
