Corin POV The healing room was quiet except for Beatrice's steady breathing. I held my hands over her left shoulder, feeling the old injury from years of carrying heavy water buckets. The warmth of my gift flowed through my palms into her muscles. "Does it still hurt when you lift things?" I asked. "Sometimes." She shifted on the table. "Not as bad as before." I focused harder, pushing more energy into the damaged tissue. That's when it hit me. A wave of cold that had nothing to do with healing. My hands trembled. "Corin?" Beatrice sat up. "What's wrong?" "Nothing." I pulled my hands back and turned toward the medicine cabinet. "Just tired." That was a lie. What I'd felt wasn't exhaustion, it was something dark.
