A New Beginning
Ethan awoke with a violent jolt, his body trembling, drenched in sweat. His chest heaved as he struggled to take in his surroundings, his mind scrambling to make sense of the world around him. The last thing he remembered was the cold, sterile lights of the hospital room, followed by the screech of metal, the impact, and then—nothing.
But now, he found himself in a grand, ornate room, decorated with symbols of an ancient empire. His hands were clad in fine silk, holding a scroll with elegant script he couldn’t yet understand. Panic flooded him, his heart racing as he struggled to stand, realizing that something—someone—wasn't right.
The reflection in the mirror was foreign. He was looking at a man he didn’t recognize. This was no longer the face of Ethan, the man who had died. Instead, he was in the body of Xie Yi, a man who, in this world, was known as a traitor—the one who betrayed Liang Xuan, the empire’s greatest general.
"Impossible," Ethan whispered to himself. His voice was shaky, foreign, but it was his—his thoughts, his memories, his soul—but this...this was not his life.
Thoughts raced through his mind: How could this be happening? How could I be inside a man who did such terrible things? What am I supposed to do now?
The echoes of Xie Yi’s betrayal in the empire, the pain of his actions that led to Liang Xuan’s fall, and the knowledge that he would eventually face punishment for those deeds filled Ethan with dread. But his resolve strengthened quickly. I can’t let this happen. I can change this. I will fix it.
His mind sharpened. He needed to understand more about the empire, the political struggles, the people, and—most importantly—Liang Xuan.
The door creaked open, and a man dressed in formal robes stepped inside. Ethan’s eyes narrowed as he recognized the figure: Wei Jun, his loyal servant. Ethan couldn’t help but wonder, was he also loyal to Xie Yi, or would he see him as the traitor he was?
“Wei Jun, where are we? What is this place?” Ethan demanded, his voice more forceful than he intended, though it came out sounding like a stranger’s.
Wei Jun bowed low, his expression unreadable. “Master Xie Yi, we are in your chambers. We are at the imperial capital, within the palace. It’s time to meet with the Prime Minister.”
Ethan blinked, the weight of the words pressing on him. He could feel the familiar authority in his tone, as though this was the way Xie Yi spoke to his servant. But it was all wrong. I’m not Xie Yi, not really. I need to fix this. I need to prove that I’m not him.
He clenched his fists, determination rising. No matter what, I’ll redeem myself.
A Dangerous Venture
Ethan paced in his chambers, his mind racing. The walls felt suffocating. He had made the decision: he needed to confront Liang Xuan. He had to prove that he was not the man who betrayed the greatest general of the empire, the man who had caused the downfall of everything Liang Xuan stood for.
The problem? Liang Xuan had been living in a military camp, far from the capital, near the empire’s borders. And Ethan, or rather, Xie Yi, had betrayed him. His presence, in the eyes of the general, would only be a symbol of his past sins, an unhealable wound. Ethan knew that he had no chance of gaining Liang Xuan's trust without first making a bold move.
"I need to meet him. Alone," Ethan muttered to himself.
Wei Jun entered the room, his usual composed expression in place. “Master Xie Yi, what is your command?”
Ethan turned to face him, his gaze sharp. “I need to leave the palace immediately. I must go to the camp where General Liang Xuan is stationed.”
Wei Jun’s eyebrows furrowed in concern. “The camp? Master, surely you know that this is not a simple journey. It is dangerous. Many would recognize you there, and your past actions—”
“I am not the man I was before,” Ethan interrupted firmly. “I have to show him. I must see him. Please, help me, Wei Jun.”
Wei Jun hesitated for a moment, but then nodded. “Very well, Master Xie Yi. If you insist, I will ensure your departure goes unnoticed. But you must be careful. If anyone finds out you have left the palace, the consequences will be dire.”
Ethan was already gathering his things. A black cloak, a disguise to obscure his identity. His heart pounded in his chest as he prepared to leave. This was the first step toward redemption—and it would either prove his sincerity or mark his end.
---
Under the cover of night, Ethan quietly slipped out of the palace gates, disguised as a common traveler. His heart raced as the cool night air bit at his skin. His disguise—simple clothing and a hooded cloak—was enough to keep the palace guards from questioning him. But he knew the real danger lay ahead: the military camp where Liang Xuan stayed.
It wasn’t long before Ethan reached the edge of the camp, his breath caught in his throat as he caught sight of the towering walls and the military tents. Soldiers marched in perfect formation, and the air was thick with the tension of impending conflict. It felt like stepping into a different world—one where power, loyalty, and betrayal were all on the line.
Ethan had no idea how he would even get to see Liang Xuan, but he knew he couldn’t fail. He couldn’t allow his past mistakes to dictate the future.
As he ventured deeper into the camp, he caught sight of a familiar figure. Zhao Ping, Liang Xuan’s right-hand man, stood near a tent, his expression cold and calculating as he spoke with a few soldiers. Ethan froze, unsure of how to proceed. Zhao Ping’s loyalty to Liang Xuan was unmatched, and if he recognized him as the traitor Xie Yi, his fate would be sealed.
But Ethan had already committed to this. His mind raced for a plan, and then, as if the gods themselves had guided him, he spotted an opportunity. A messenger, holding a letter, was making his way toward the general’s tent. Ethan quickly approached him, his steps swift and calculated.
“Excuse me, I need to deliver this to General Liang Xuan. It is of great importance,” Ethan said, trying to sound authoritative.
The messenger glanced at him skeptically but then nodded. “Fine, just don’t delay.”
Ethan took the letter from the messenger’s hands and walked quickly toward the tent, hoping that his ruse would be enough to pass through unnoticed. His heart pounded in his chest, his mind racing with thoughts of how much he was risking. But he had no choice.
The tent flaps parted, and before Ethan could announce himself, he was met with the cold, piercing gaze of Liang Xuan.
For a moment, time seemed to freeze.
Liang Xuan stood tall, his armor gleaming faintly in the low light of the camp. His eyes, sharp and calculating, locked onto Ethan. He said nothing at first, simply studying the stranger in front of him.
Ethan swallowed hard, taking a step forward. “General Liang Xuan,” he said in a low voice. “I... I need to speak with you.”
Liang Xuan’s gaze flickered to the letter in Ethan’s hand, but he said nothing, allowing Ethan to continue.
“I know who you think I am, but I am not the man who betrayed you. I swear it. I’ve come to prove my loyalty. I beg you, give me a chance.”
