Zara's Pov
No, it can't be. It shouldn't be.
How the hell do these two always find a way back into my life?
My body felt cold. I didn't know what to expect or what to do. What if this all goes wrong? What if they expose me?
I was not yet over the pain, the betrayal, the heartbreak. I wasn't ready to face them. I never wanted to have to face them.
It was Williams that first recovered and he went to give Amelia a peck in the cheeks, exchanging pleasantries.
“What are you doing here, Zara?” Quincy asked, her voice loud and sharp but when she saw how all eyes were on her, she changed her glare into a smile as she laughed awkwardly. “I didn't know I'd meet you here, sis,” she added, walking up to me and giving me a hug.
“You two know each other?” Samuel asked and Quincy nodded, stating that we're sisters.
“Waw, what a small world. Who would have thought both my grandsons would be marrying into the same family,” Michaels said, chuckling.
“What?!” Williams and Quincy's voices echoed.
“Yes, she's Samuel’s fiance.”
“No way!” Williams exclaimed. He looked shocked… almost angry.
“How's that even possible?” He continued. “You were dating my cousin when you were dating me, Zara?”
Oh s**t!
Why did he have to go there? Why did he have to bring that up?
“I… I think I need to use the restroom.” That was all I could say. That was the only excuse I could think of.
The tension in the room was thick. All eyes were on me, including Samuel who seemed rather perplexed. I didn't plan for this to happen. Heck, I couldn't even defend myself.
How was I supposed to explain that I wasn't actually dating Samuel? How was I supposed to tell them that it was only an already signed contract that bound me and Samuel together?
It would cost Samuel his fortune.
But how could I tell them that I was marrying Samuel after meeting him in a day without sounding stupid?
I made to move out but Quincy immediately blocked me.
“You should answer the question, sis. Were you two-timing Williams with his cousin? How could you?” Quincy asked, her voice breaking in the end like she wanted to cry.
It took everything in me not to hit her.
“Okay…okay, calm down. I think there's a misunderstanding here,” Samuel cut in, pulling me closer to him by the waist protectively and Williams scowled.
“Waw! I thought you were just a boring dumbo but I didn't know you were actually a w***e. And here I was feeling guilty that I picked the actual heir to the Daniels Group.” He scoffed.
“I spent those years with your smelly nothing of a self to actually get close to my dear Quincy and create a stronger dynasty for Davis Group and when I succeeded, you wanted to make me feel guilty and… and I almost did. If only I knew you were some loose w***e, b***h!”
My mouth opened, I was short of words at all he was saying. I'd given him three years of my life, three years of faithfulness and loyalty, love and devotion but he simply saw me as a means to an end?
Boring. Dumb. Smelly. Nothing. w***e. b***h.
All these names coming from the mouth of the man I once loved. Was he always this way?
Why didn't I see it? Why didn't I place the dots together when it was frankly obvious? Why did I fool myself into believing he actually liked me?
It stung, it actually did. And I bowed my head, sadness running through my spine. A fresh feeling of heartbreak brewing.
Why did I feel this way? Why did I feel worthless and pathetic?
I didn't do anything wrong. I didn't hurt him or my sister. All I ever did was love them but this is what I get?
If only wishes were horses, I'd show Williams a taste of what he's done to me. If wishes were horses, I'd make him pay for deceiving me when his sole aim was to be with my evil sister.
And Quincy, I just wish I could expose her for who she really was; a deceitful, cunning, cruel witch whose main aim is to see me crumble.
Indeed, if wishes were horses.
“Zara, must you always disgrace the Daniels’ name wherever you go? Yes, I know I messed up but I saw you as an example I wanted to emulate. I didn't know you were just a harlot!”
“Enough!” Grandpa's voice echoed. I flinched.
This was it. I was going to be kicked out of this house just like that. I was going to lose the three hundred thousand dollar deal. I was going to lose everything again and leave with shame and a fresh wound.
Again, Quincy has done it.
“Zara,” Michaels called lowly. “What do you have to say for yourself?”
I looked up at Samuel's eyes which held pity.
We had a deal to never reveal our agreement otherwise I could be sued and if this deal doesn't pull through, I could just leave with a sum of five thousand dollars for my time.
So, I'm caught up between revealing the honest truth and getting sued or just walking away in shame.
But I knew I had to answer Michaels, so I turned to face him, my side, facing Madame Amelia.
“I… I…” I stuttered, short of words.
This is it. I'll agree to cheating so as not to cost Samuel his inheritance.
“Actually, I was in a secret…”
“Wait!” Amelia exclaimed, looking at me like a gold bar she lost that she had finally found. “It… it can't be,” she said pointing at my neck.
“Uhnnn… what…”
“You! You…” She blinked, still pointed at my neck. “That birthmark on your neck… It… How…”
“What is it Amelia? Are you alright?”
“She… she's my missing daughter,” Amelia dropped.
The room went quiet for what felt like hours, everyone's expression displaying shock. Mine, squeezed into confusion.
Williams burst into laughter, followed by Quincy who chuckled. “You almost got me there, ma'am. I didn't know you were also funny,” Williams said, amidst laughter.
Quincy laughed and added, “Waw, I almost bought it.”
But Madam Amelia wasn't laughing. Instead, she was looking at them like they were crazy. And when they saw her face that morphed into seriousness, Williams said, “Oh. You're serious?!”
“Of course I'm serious.”
She was? This has actually got to be a joke because how? How can this be possible?
“We went on a trip to an amusement park and I lost my baby. My cute little smart baby. And since then, we've searched all over the world but we couldn't find her,” she added, her eyes teary and I almost joined her in tears. It was a sad story but that doesn't prove that I'm her child.
Does it?
Quincy scoffed, folding her arms before she said, “That doesn't prove anything. How are you so sure she's your lost child? Besides, there's no way my parents adopted imp would be the daughter of the richest woman on earth.”
“Amelia, are you sure about this?” Michaels asked softly.
“I am as sure as I know my name, Michaels. When I had my child, she came out with that strange birthmark behind her ears.” Amelia looked at me with that same longing she had when she first saw me and continued. “Now I know why I felt drawn towards you.”
“But… how…” I stuttered, confused.
Then I remembered when the reverend sister in the orphanage told me how she found me around an amusement park, crying, looking for my parents.
But I had no memory of that day. So I was confused. However, I believed it.
“Exactly, how are you sure she's the one?” Williams asked.
“I had my team do a figure drawing and then an age progression after my dear husband died. I promised him, I'd find you… And now, I have,” she said with tears filled eyes.
She walked up to me and gave me a hug, crying profusely and repeatedly saying, “My baby, My baby.”
I stood frozen, unsure of what to do. The information was too much for me to handle and then she dropped the next life changing statement.
“You're my child, Zara Millers. The heir to the Millers Group.”
