Chapter 4

728 Words
The rain had eased by morning, leaving the world rinsed and fresh. Maya stood on the porch of Ethan Cole’s house once again, her bag slung across her shoulder, her palms damp despite the cool air. Her reflection in the glass pane of the door startled her. She had braided her hair neatly, chosen her plainest blouse, pressed her jeans as best she could. She didn’t want to stand out, not here. She just wanted to do her work quietly and well, to fade into the background. But when the door opened, Lily’s delighted squeal shattered that wish. “Miss Rivera!” The little girl flung herself forward, her arms wrapping tightly around Maya’s legs. Maya laughed softly, bending to return the hug. “Good morning, princess.” Lily grinned at the nickname, then tugged her inside. “Come see! Daddy made pancakes, but he doesn’t put enough chocolate chips.” Maya’s gaze flicked up. Ethan stood in the kitchen doorway, a spatula still in his hand, watching the scene with an unreadable expression. He wore a gray Henley and jeans, casual but put-together, and the sight sent an unexpected flutter through her chest. “Good morning,” he said, his voice lower than she remembered. “Morning,” Maya replied, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. He cleared his throat, gesturing toward the kitchen. “There’s breakfast if you want some.” It was awkward, kind, but careful, like he wasn’t sure what boundaries to set. Maya followed Lily to the table, pulling out a chair. The pancakes were slightly uneven, edges a little too crisp, but the effort was clear. “You cook?” she asked lightly, glancing at Ethan as he set a plate in front of his daughter. “When I have to,” he admitted, sliding into the seat across from her. “Though Lily would argue I’m not very good at it.” “You burn the bacon,” Lily announced between mouthfuls, earning a laugh from Maya and a resigned shake of Ethan’s head. The sound of laughter felt strange in Maya’s throat. It had been too long since something so simple made her smile. After breakfast, Ethan showed her around the house. It was tidy enough, but she could see the small signs of a man stretched thin, laundry folded but not put away, toys tucked hastily in corners, papers stacked unevenly on the desk. “You don’t need to worry about the office,” he said quickly when she paused at the doorway. “That’s… mine.” She nodded, not pressing. Everyone had their private spaces. She understood that better than most. By late morning, she had rolled up her sleeves and begun in the kitchen. The steady rhythm of washing dishes, scrubbing counters, and organizing cabinets grounded her, gave her a sense of purpose she hadn’t felt in months. Lily drifted in and out, sometimes asking questions, sometimes just sitting nearby with her crayons. At one point, she handed Maya a crookedly cut paper heart. “For you,” Lily said proudly. Maya took it carefully, as though it were fragile. “Thank you, sweetheart.” She tucked it into her notebook when Lily wasn’t looking. From the living room, Ethan watched them. He told himself it was only because he wanted to make sure this arrangement would work. But the truth was, there was something disarming about the way Maya moved through his home. She didn’t impose, didn’t chatter or pry. She simply… fit. And the way Lily glowed in her presence, it tugged at something in him he hadn’t let himself feel in a long time. Still, he reminded himself, this was just work. She was here to help, nothing more. Nothing more. That evening, after Lily had been tucked into bed, Maya gathered her bag. “Thank you for letting me stay the day,” she said softly at the door. Ethan nodded. “Thank you for… helping. She likes you.” A shadow of something passed through Maya’s eyes. She only offered a small smile in response, dipping her head before stepping into the cool night air. Ethan lingered at the doorway, watching her retreat down the path, her figure outlined by the streetlamp’s glow. For the first time in years, the house behind him didn’t feel quite so heavy with silence.
