Chapter 4__
Luna
The alarm woke me up, and I immediately regretted opening my eyes, thinking about what awaits me today. Maybe it’s better for me to quit. I mean, it’s not too late now, is it? But quitting means I had to give up on my dreams as well, and I didn’t work my butt off just to quit over a minor problem. With a grunt, I dragged myself out of bed and headed towards the washroom.
By the time I was done getting ready, Lia had already left. Her work starts much earlier than mine, that girl might behave like a kid sometimes, but she never takes her job lightly and that’s the kinda spirit I want to have in me. I saw she had made breakfast for me with a note: “ Sorry for causing you problems yesterday. Hope this will make your day."
I have never had someone who really cares about me that deep my whole life, so her taking care of me while she can barely do the laundry on her own makes me feel special. She has a loving parent, looking out for her, unlike me, yet she understands how truly hard it was for me to come this far.
I brace myself for whatever today has in store and leave the apartment. Walking inside the building, I tried my best to ignore the headmaster's office. As I was heading towards my class, I saw freya walking out of the headmaster's office. Before I could do or say something, she linked her arm to mine, dragging along. “Good morning, are you heading to your class?” I just nodded at that. “ I was thinking maybe we could have lunch together. What say? "
“ Yeah, sure,” I said, although I wanted to say no badly. It’s not like I don’t like her, but I just get really uncomfortable around people that I barely know. She smiles at that. Right when I was about to excuse myself, the headmaster came out of his office. My first instinct was to run again, but then I tried keeping my calm this time.
The headmaster turns his head towards us, although why does it feel like he’s looking at me? From the corner of my eye I can sense Freya’s stare boring into me, traveling from headmaster to me continuously. I didn’t want any extra gossip or drama, so I excused myself and headed towards my class.
As soon as I entered the class, I took a long breath. I might be a little young to be considered as a professor, but I have earned that position and I will not let anybody walk on me. I can feel the stare of someone behind my back and when I turn my head I am met with the same eyes that I had encountered before, only this time to be more intense.
I was in the middle of teaching when I heard whispers and giggles from the back of the class and I didn’t even have to look to know who it was. Guess my lesson was funnier than I thought. I crossed my arm at that. “ Something funny? Mind sharing with the whole class, Mr...? ” I said with a hint of irritation in my voice. “We were wondering if you were a professor at this early age then how old were you when you passed your university?” I hear the same voice but this time with a hint of mocking. Nobody dares to say anything or defend the professor.
“Certainly old enough to have some decency in the classroom, regardless of age,” I replied. Another gasp and murmur breaks the classroom. “Let me be clear here in case you all didn't get the memo. I am a professor here, not your friend, and whatever my past is, you are not question it. If you have any questions regarding the subject, I am willing to help, but aside from that, if y’all try to go personal, I can’t promise you the consequences that come after, no matter what background you come from.”
I thought I had made my point clear, but instead of apologizing he smirked, clearly amused by what I said. Nobody dares say anything during the whole class. By the time the bell rang, I was almost out the door when someone bang their hand lightly on my desk. When I lifted my gaze, I met the same weird guy along with his two other weird friends. “Have you got the memo yet”? I ask without lifting my gaze from the papers.
His friends snickered at that, trying not to laugh out loud. “Out,” he said in his deadliest tone. Now it was only him and me. After what felt like an eternity, he broke the silence: “ Three years ago, where were you? " I almost lost my balance from that question. I mean how? What? What’s going on? I tried to keep my face neutral, afraid I might give up.
“You still didn’t get the memo, I see.” I try to brush it off casually. Although he must have sensed my displeasure and leaned forward slightly. I had no intention of leaning towards him, so I just stood there firmly. “ Kian? ” he whispered. “What?” " That’s my name, you seemed confused earlier. " With that he left.
The audacity students these days have is really concerning. But what does he mean by that question? Was it random? Was it intentional? Whatever, I tried not to dwell on that. I can see Professor freya already waiting for me.
Although I was not really that hungry, I didn’t mind accompanying her. The silence in the room is thick enough to cut through. When she sensed my footsteps, she immediately pulled me next to her seat. “I thought you wouldn’t come,” she said softly. “I was about to leave when a student asked for my help regarding the subject, so that took a while,” I said, keeping my excuse to myself. Although she must have sensed my excuse, she didn’t bother questioning it.
“You have got quite a student in your class, Professor Luna. I need you to watch out for those students as their family practically runs this university,” she casually says, taking a bite from her food. “I am sure every action has equal reaction and beside the headmaster seems like a very strict but fair with no partiality kind of person,” I said with no rumors.
She almost choked on her food at that and shifted closer to me to the point where I could catch a whiff of her gentle vanilla perfume. “ You absolutely got the wrong idea about him if you think he is a saint. The headmaster personally gets a cut from their donation, " she whispers at this point. My mind takes me back to yesterday at his sharp words directed at those students who probably came from very wealthy backgrounds.
“ It seems like he’s fair to everyone, but it’s just for the show, so don’t be fooled." This time I didn’t say anything because, deep down, I am aware of how these things work in such places. “Don’t worry, you will get used to them. I had the same thought when I was new here but later learned the harsh reality,” she gently taps my hand, probably having flashbacks.
Just when I thought that was it, she dropped another bomb on me. “ But the biggest shock to me was knowing his intentions on hiring only very few young professors." By this point my patience was running thin, too much information to process at a time. But curiosity got me, so I had to ask“ what do you mean?" Right when she was about to open her mouth, the bell went off, meaning lunchtime was over. “ I will tell you tomorrow at the same time, the same place. " With that, she walked out of the room.
