Chapter 12: Choosing Sides Darius POV The air felt suffocating, the tension between Killian and Darius nearly crackling like static electricity. You stood between them, an unwilling participant in their battle of wills. Killian’s eyes burned with controlled determination, while Darius’s gaze held the raw desperation of a man haunted by his past. “Aria, you know I wouldn’t betray you,” Darius said, his voice cracking with an emotion that made your chest tighten. “You have to believe me. Everything I did, I did to save you.” Killian scoffed, stepping forward. “Save her? That’s rich coming from the man who let her die. You talk about love and protection, but where were you when it mattered?” The accusation hit Darius like a blow, but he didn’t back down. His voice hardened. “You don’t know what I went through. What we went through. Don’t act like you understand.” “Enough!” you snapped, your voice echoing through the room. Both men turned to you, their arguments frozen mid-breath. “This isn’t helping. Neither of you is helping.” You took a step back, needing space from their suffocating presence. Your mind was a storm of conflicting emotions, each pulling you in a different direction. Darius. Your mate. The one who was meant to be your other half. But memories of your death at his hands haunted you, shadowing every word he spoke, every look he gave you. Killian. Your supposed protector. The one who offered you a way out, a path to safety. Yet his secrets gnawed at you, leaving a bitter taste of doubt. You sank into a chair, your head in your hands. “I need time. I need to think.” Darius stepped closer, his voice softer now. “Aria, you don’t have to decide anything right now. Just... let me prove myself to you. Let me show you the truth.” Killian’s jaw tightened, and you could feel the anger rolling off him in waves. “You can’t trust him, Aria. He’s manipulating you. Again.” You lifted your head, staring at Killian. “And you? You’ve been hiding things from me too. Why should I trust you any more than him?” Killian flinched, his expression faltering for a moment before hardening again. “Because I’ve done nothing but protect you. Everything I’ve kept from you was for your own safety.” “That’s not your decision to make,” you said quietly. The silence that followed was heavy, each of you trapped in your own thoughts. Then a knock at the door broke the tension. One of Killian’s warriors stepped inside, his expression grim. “Alpha, we’ve spotted rogue activity near the western border. Veyron’s wolves.” Killian straightened, his entire demeanor shifting into that of the Alpha. “How many?” “Too many for a simple patrol,” the warrior replied. “It looks like an ambush waiting to happen.” Killian nodded, already moving toward the door. “Prepare the warriors. We’ll meet them head-on.” Darius moved to follow, but Killian turned, his expression cold. “This isn’t your fight.” “Veyron is my enemy too,” Darius said. “I’m not standing by while he tears everything apart.” Killian didn’t respond, but he didn’t stop Darius from following. You hesitated, the weight of your decision pressing down on you. If you went with them, you’d be walking straight into danger. But if you stayed behind, you’d be left to wonder what could have been. “Aria,” Killian said, his voice softer now. “Stay here. It’s safer.” “No,” you said firmly. “I’m coming with you.” Neither man looked pleased, but neither argued. --- The western border was a desolate stretch of forest, the trees bare and skeletal against the overcast sky. The scent of rogues was strong, mingling with the metallic tang of impending violence. Killian’s warriors moved in silence, their movements precise and coordinated. Darius stayed close to you, his presence a mixture of comfort and tension. Then, the first attack came. A rogue lunged from the shadows, its eyes gleaming with madness. Killian met it head-on, his claws slicing through fur and flesh. Chaos erupted around you as more rogues emerged, their snarls filling the air. You fought alongside the others, your wolf surging forward with a strength you hadn’t felt in years. But even as you defended yourself, your mind was elsewhere, replaying Veyron’s words. “You’re the linchpin.” Why you? Why did he need you to destroy the mate bond? A rogue broke through your defenses, its jaws snapping dangerously close to your throat. You froze, panic rooting you in place. “Aria!” Darius was there in an instant, ripping the rogue away and throwing it to the ground. His eyes met yours, filled with an emotion you couldn’t name. “I won’t lose you again,” he said, his voice raw. Before you could respond, a piercing howl cut through the air. The fighting stopped, every wolf turning toward the source of the sound. Veyron stood on a ridge, his presence commanding and terrifying. Beside him was a figure you didn’t recognize—a woman with an aura as dark as his own. “Aria,” Veyron called, his voice carrying easily over the distance. “It’s time to choose. Your place is with me, not these fools who can’t protect you.” Your heart pounded as all eyes turned to you. Veyron’s words hung in the air, a challenge you couldn’t ignore. “What does he mean?” Killian demanded, his voice sharp. Darius’s expression darkened. “Aria, don’t listen to him. He’s manipulating you.” But your gaze was locked on Veyron, a cold dread settling in your chest. His words weren’t just a threat—they were a promise. And deep down, you knew he wasn’t going to stop until you were his.
