Chapter 16: The Reckoning Darius POV The air in the grand council chamber was thick with tension. Heavy wooden beams stretched across the ceiling, their carved runes glowing faintly with ancient power. Darius strode into the room, his boots echoing against the marble floors. The room was full, council members seated in a crescent, their faces shadowed by the dim light of the chandelier. But Darius didn’t care about their gazes. His golden eyes were fixed on one person. Killian. The rival alpha lounged in his chair, looking smug and untouchable, his icy blue eyes gleaming as though he anticipated this confrontation. He always did. “Alpha Darius,” one of the elders began, his voice laced with irritation. “This is a council meeting, not—” “I don’t care what this is supposed to be,” Darius interrupted, his deep voice cutting through the elder's objection. “This concerns all of us. Killian’s actions are a threat to the balance of our packs.” Killian raised a brow, leaning forward slightly. “Darius, it’s not like you to be dramatic. What exactly are you accusing me of?” “You know exactly what this is about.” Darius’s voice dropped, laced with fury. “Aria.” A murmur rippled through the council. Several members exchanged wary glances, while others leaned forward, eager to witness the clash. Killian smirked. “Ah, the ever-enchanting Aria. She does have a way of stirring the pot, doesn’t she?” Darius slammed his hand on the table, the force sending a crack through the wood. “Don’t play coy with me, Killian. You’ve been interfering with my mate.” Killian’s smirk widened, but there was something dark in his expression now. “Your mate, you say? Funny. I don’t recall her bearing your mark.” Darius bristled. “That’s because you’ve been poisoning her mind, keeping her from fulfilling the bond.” “Poisoning her mind?” Killian laughed, a sharp, mocking sound. “You mean she’s making her own choices? How inconvenient for you, Darius.” Before Darius could retort, Elder Malric raised a hand, his voice booming with authority. “Enough! This is not the place to air personal grievances. Alpha Killian, Alpha Darius, your conflict endangers the peace of this council. Explain yourselves properly, or I’ll have both of you removed.” Darius took a breath, forcing himself to calm down. “Killian has been manipulating Aria, sowing doubts about our bond, and—” “Manipulating?” Killian cut in, his tone sharp. “Aria came to me, Darius. She sought answers, truth. Something you were too cowardly to provide.” “That’s a lie!” Darius snarled, his wolf clawing at the surface of his control. “She would never seek you out.” “Wouldn’t she?” Killian’s gaze turned calculating. “She told me about the vision, Darius. The one you’ve been hiding from her.” The chamber fell silent. Darius’s blood ran cold. “You’re lying.” Killian stood, his presence dominating the room. “Am I? You know as well as I do that Aria isn’t just a mate. She’s the key to something much greater. Something you’ve been trying to shield her from.” “Stop this,” Darius growled. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Oh, but I do.” Killian’s voice was a low purr now, dripping with malice. “I know that Aria’s visions aren’t just fragments of some long-forgotten prophecy. They’re warnings. And you’re too afraid to face them.” The council members began whispering among themselves, the weight of Killian’s words sinking in. “You’ve overstepped, Killian,” Darius said, his voice trembling with barely restrained rage. “Aria is my mate. Whatever you think you know, it’s none of your concern.” “But it is my concern,” Killian said, stepping closer. “Because Aria is more than just your mate. She’s the one who will tip the balance between the packs. And if you’re too blind to see it, then maybe she deserves a choice.” Darius moved so fast that even the elders couldn’t stop him. In a flash, he had Killian by the collar, slamming him against the stone wall. The room erupted into chaos, council members shouting for calm, but Darius didn’t hear them. “You will stay away from her,” Darius growled, his fangs elongating. “If you so much as look at her again—” “You think threats will stop me?” Killian hissed, his own wolf surging to the surface. “You’re already losing her, Darius. And when she learns the truth, she’ll see you for the coward you are.” Before the fight could escalate, a sharp crack of magic tore through the air. Both alphas were thrown apart, landing hard on the ground. Elder Malric stood, his staff glowing with power. “That is enough!” Malric bellowed. “You are not pups to be brawling over territory. If you cannot conduct yourselves with dignity, then you are unworthy of the positions you hold.” Darius pushed himself to his feet, his gaze still locked on Killian. “This isn’t over.” Killian smirked, brushing himself off. “It never is.” Malric’s voice turned cold. “The council will convene a private session to discuss your actions, both of you. Until then, you are to stay away from each other. Is that clear?” Neither alpha responded, but the tension in the room was answer enough. As the meeting adjourned, Darius turned to leave, his mind racing. He needed to find Aria, to explain everything before Killian twisted the truth even further. But as he reached the door, one of the younger council members, a woman with piercing green eyes, stopped him. “Darius,” she whispered, glancing around to make sure no one was listening. “There’s something you need to see. It’s about Aria.” Darius frowned. “What is it?” The woman hesitated, then slipped a folded parchment into his hand. “I found this in Killian’s quarters. I thought you should know.” Darius unfolded the parchment, his heart pounding. It was a map, marked with strange symbols he didn’t recognize. But at the center of it, written in bold, unmistakable script, was Aria’s name. And beneath it, a single word that made his blood run cold: Sacrifice. To be continued…
