I didn't even see the first shadow shift before the iron taste of blood reached my nostrils. The crunch of leaves under my boots matched the steady hammering of my heart as it thudded in my chest. This section of the forest was new to me, darker, and covered with vines that, if I stared at them for too long, appeared to move.
