Secret Alpha

I phased into a stark black wolf with emerald green eyes. It should have been one of the best nights of my life, i was inheriting my fathers pack, and instead I spent it sulking by the river staring at my own wolffish reflection. My father not only left me but he expected me to defy centuries of werewolf tradition and become the first female alpha in history. Did he not understand how much pressure that was? And what if I found my mate? A male wouldn’t be Luna. Would I be giving up my title to my fated? That’s not what my father would have wanted. I needed to make him proud. The word of my fathers death spread quickly and the alphas answering machine became flooded with condolences and requested meetings. I knew I wouldn’t have much time to grieve but this was just inconsiderate. I called my fathers Beta Kinney in for a chat. Beta Kinney was a kind man with warm brown eyes, a shaved head and contagious smile. He had been my fathers best friend for years. They formed it together. “Alpha Mazikeen” Kinney said respectfully as he entered the room. “Uncle Kinney please just Maze. I need to discuss my plan with you” Kinney smiled warmly and nodded. “I don’t want my coronation to happen immediately.. I want to take over role as alpha while slowly easing our allies into the idea..” I paused to gauge his reaction but he kept a neutral face. “I am newly eighteen and a female. We could lose allies if we force everyone into this. I propose we keep our Alphas identity a secret as we do a trial run to see if they are a good fit. Only you and I will know I am acting as alpha. Everyone will get to see what I’m capable of without the initial judgement of who I am. What I am.” I took a deep breath waiting for his responses “I think this is extremely wise. How long will this trial last?” He tried to remain neutral but I could see the pride in his eyes and I choked back the emotions threatening to escape. “A year. On my nineteenth birthday we will do my coronation and reveal in one big lavish party for our allies” I had some details I wanted to fine tune but I was sure a year would be enough time to convince any possible doubters. “Very well. I will arrange for the alpha floor to be blocked off from any visitors. There is a passage from your current room to there. Your father had it built in case of emergency” he trailed off and I understood why. I nodded signaling his dismissal. As the door clicked I sagged into the seat and started going through the messages making note of who called, who requested meetings and whether these packs were allies, potential allies or just nearby packs. I spent the entire day sifting through these messages, making notes of who to call back and what to say. I had completely lost track of time when I heard a knock at the door. “Maze honey you haven’t eaten..” a quiet but stern voice announced as the door creaked open. My best friend walked in with a sandwich tray. Her chocolate brown hair fell in waves down her back and her golden skin shone even under the meek office light. “Thanks Lisa, I’ve been busy” I gave her a small smile as she placed the tray on the edge of the desk. “Just eat please Maze.. and let me know if you need anything” I saw her give me one last sympathy look before slipping back out and leaving me alone again. I finished up my list and took a bite of the sandwich Lisa left me. In the next year I needed to pick my Beta and Gamma, continue to help this pack prosper and convince several other packs that a woman was fit for the job. Goddess I was in for the fight of my life.
