CHAPTER SIX

When we arrived at the store, we all got down. Nathan opened his truck and brought out a duffel bag, I looked at him wondering what he was doing with it. He opened the bag and took out a large hoodie, quickly he put it on and used the hood to cover his hair, then he retrieved a pair of glasses from his pocket and used them to shield his eyes. I gave him a confused look," What are you doing". "The stores full of people that can recognize me", he shrugged, dropping the bag back in the trunk. He had a point, but he was going to look strange in the store either way if he dressed like that. "You do know it's like 100 degrees right?", I questioned looking him up and down. "People are going to find it weird that you're wearing a hoodie and shades considering how hot it is", I explained folding my hands. He rolled his eyes, "Better they find me weird than figuring out who I am", he said as he brushed past me heading to the glass door of the store. Anna quickly followed him so she could walk side by side with him, I rolled my eyes and caught up with them. We walked through the aisle, looking for all the recipes we were going to eat. Nathan suggested splitting us up so we could get the shopping done faster. Anna was in charge of the pastry ingredients while I and Nathan were in charge of the main meals, much to Anna's dismay. She wanted to be paired up with Nathan, but he chose me for some reason. I had gone halfway through my list no thanks to Nathan. All he did was press his phone, I didn't even see the point of his company as he didn't even try to help find anything. "Are you going to help or what?", I asked, frustrated. "Or what", he stated, giving me a wink before going back to whatever he was doing on his phone. I angrily snatched his phone and turned it off. He looked up at me with surprise and held out his hand, gesturing for me to give his phone back. I smiled and kept it in my back pocket. "Do you think keeping it there is going to stop me from getting it back?", He smirked. "You wouldn't dare", I countered. "Look, I'll give it back to you when we're done here." "Fine", he said grudgingly. "We don't need chocolate chips, Nathan", I said as he grabbed them. "What? I love chocolate chips and I think you should add them", he whined. "If we keep on adding everything you like, we're going to go over budget", I sighed. "Well, it's a good thing I have my credit card", he said with a cheeky smile while waving his black card. Oh Lord, can this day be over. I rolled my eyes for the umpteenth time. "What's next on the list?", I inquired as I pushed the stroller. Nathan decided to be in charge of the list. "Soy sauce", he replied. I collected three bottles and turned to him, "What else?" "We're done", he smiled crunching the piece of paper and throwing it in the bin. "Really?", I asked surprised. "Yep, we make a good team don't we?", He asked wiggling his brows. I rolled my eyes as we went to the cashier. "Your eyes are going to be stuck like that if you continue rolling them so often", he commented jokingly. "Sure it will", I humored. We paid for what we bought and headed to the exit. I texted Anna, asking her if she was done with her list. "I'm hungry, let's go eat", Nathan stated out of the blue. "What? No, let's just drive to the villa and eat there", I suggested. "Come on, that's a long way from here.", He replied as he opened the trunk and began to place all we bought inside. Anna replied to my message letting me know that, there was a long queue and that she was going to take a while. "s**t", I muttered as I texted her back saying, we'll wait for her. "What?", Nathan asked as he shut the trunk. "Anna's going to take a while, apparently there's a long queue", I said to him. "You see, the universe wants us to have lunch together", he beamed. "Okay okay, let's go eat", I gave in. We walked back into the store to eat. I had no idea where we were going but I assumed he had somewhere in mind. "So where are we eating?", I questioned "Sinatra", he stated. "I heard their food is excellent, I've always wanted to try it out". Yeah, it's excellent and expensive. Sinatra was one of the best French restaurants in Las Vegas. I used to check them out on the internet back in New York because of their dishes and pastries. "It's too pricey", I said, shaking my head. "Why don't we go to Mac Donald's", I suggested. "I don't eat Mac Donald", he replied with a look of disgust. "Look, don't worry about the price, I asked you to eat so I'm paying". "Well who am I to say no to free food?", I joked. "Lead the way". We climbed a staircase and at the top, we saw a sign that read 'Sinatra' pointing to the left. On reaching the entrance, a doorman opened the door, letting us pass through. "Wait here, I'll get us a table", I said. There were a lot of people and the last thing we wanted was for people to notice him. He gave a thankful smile as I walked to the receptionist. The receptionist was a blonde girl and she seemed to be around my age. She was typing on a laptop when I approached her. "Hey, I'd like to get a table for three", I stated. "Do you have a reservation", she questioned, her eyes still focused on the laptop screen. "Eh, nope, but I wouldn't mind paying extra to get the table". I replied. By 'I', I meant Nathan, because there was no way I could afford this. "No reservation, no table", she said looking up from the screen with a tight-lipped smile, obviously fake. "Please we really need this", I added desperately. "Geez lady, I don't make the rules. Come back with a reservation", she snarled. She went back to typing signaling that she was done with the conversation. Rude, I thought as I walked back to Nathan. "Any luck", he asked. I shook my head and he started walking towards the receptionist. Confused, I followed him wondering what he was going to do. "Hello love, I'd like to get a table for three", he said as he rested his hand on the table. The blonde receptionist continued typing, without looking up, "Under what reservation?" "Actually, I don't have a reservation". "We have rules no reservation no-", she paused as she looked up and saw Nathan's face. Nathan gave her a charming smile as she stared at him. "Y-you're Na-tthan Lockwood", she stuttered, opening her mouth wide. "Close your mouth or you'd catch flies", I muttered to myself. Nathan rested on the table, leaning forward he asked " Is there something you can do for us?" The receptionist looked star-struck to the point that her face was getting red, "I could try", she squeaked. She could try? I practically begged her and she wasn't willing to. "My friend and I would appreciate it", he commented squeezing her hand and winking. We waited for five minutes and were given one of the best tables in the restaurant thanks to Nathan's seductive ways. I guess he was helpful in some way. "So tell me about yourself NFL superstar", I let out as we ate. " What do you want to know?", he implored. "How did you become a big shot in less than five years?", I wondered. He smiled, "Wrong, that's what people believe but I didn't get into football just four years ago. I was there for a while but no one noticed me". " Really?" "Yeah, I was a football adviser", he answered running his hand through his hair. "Wow, that's impressive", I commented. "So why did you go into the field". "Well, my mom didn't want me to be a footballer because my dad tore his ACL while on the field. So she kinda banned it in the house, but I guess you can't stop someone's passion. I decided to play because it's my dream", he explained with a thoughtful look. I was impressed, hearing him say that made me feel there was more to him than the press and social media let on. "That's amazing Nathan", I said with a serious look. "So are you cool with your mom?", I inquired. "Yeah, at first she wasn't okay with it but then she warmed up to the idea". I would kill for a mother like his. Unfortunately, my mom could never be happy for me. "How about you? How did you know that baking was your thing?", He inquired. "Baking wasn't always my thing. I studied law in college". "What?", He asked amazed. "How did you go from law to being a baker". "I guess law wasn't something I wanted to do, it was more of my parents wanting me to study that course.", I started. "Things happened, and I found my passion, I found what made me happy and I couldn't have made a better decision", I explained. Nathan nodded his head in understanding, "that's cool". "Are the rents cool with it?", He asked. "Nope, they think I'm a failure but I don't care, as long as I'm happy". He held my hand and gave a small squeeze," they're so wrong about you. I'm sure they'll soon realize that.". We were both smiling and staring at each other when we heard someone drop something on the table. "Hey guys, that queue was terrible", Anna groaned collapsing on the empty chair. She noticed our hands were locked and looked between the two of us, " What did I miss?" "Nothing", Nathan and I responded at the same time, quickly withdrawing our hands. The drive back to the villa was somewhat uncomfortable due to our moment if I could call it that. Either way today was not as terrible as I thought it would be. Spending time with Nathan showed me there was more to him than I thought. He certainly wasn't as bad as I pictured him to be.
