Episode 12: The Shadow Gate
The roar beneath the palace grew louder.
Abigail stood at the entrance of the Moon Crypt with Cameroon, Lydia, Marcus, Daniel, Ethan, and Adrian.
A massive black gate stood before them.
Silver chains wrapped around it from top to bottom, each chain covered in ancient symbols.
Abigail stared at it.
"He's behind that gate."
Adrian nodded.
"Your father."
Cameroon studied the symbols.
"How do we open it?"
Adrian shook his head.
"We don't."
Marcus frowned.
"Then why did we come all the way down here?"
"Because the gate can only be opened by the Moon's heir."
Everyone looked at Abigail.
She stepped forward.
Lydia immediately grabbed her arm.
"Are you sure?"
"No."
Marcus smiled nervously.
"Excellent. That's exactly what I wanted to hear."
Abigail placed her hand against the gate.
The silver symbols suddenly began glowing.
A voice echoed from behind it.
"Abigail."
She froze.
It was the same voice from the vision.
"Father?"
"Do not open the gate."
Abigail looked at her friends.
"Why?"
Her father's voice became urgent.
"Because the Shadow Gate is not only a prison."
The chains began shaking.
"It is a seal."
Adrian's eyes widened.
"A seal for what?"
Silence.
Then Abigail's father answered.
"The first darkness."
The entire crypt trembled.
Daniel tightened his grip on his sword.
"How powerful is it?"
Her father replied:
"Powerful enough to destroy Elaria."
Abigail stepped back.
"Then why are the Night Ravens trying to open it?"
"They aren't trying to open it."
Everyone became silent.
"They are trying to break it."
Suddenly, one of the silver chains snapped.
BOOM!
Lydia screamed.
Another chain broke.
BOOM!
Marcus looked at Cameroon.
"Please tell me you have a plan."
Cameroon stared at the gate.
"I have several."
Marcus relaxed.
"Good."
Cameroon continued:
"None of them are good."
Marcus's face fell.
"You had to ruin the moment."
Abigail looked at the gate.
"What happens if all the chains break?"
Her father answered:
"I don't know."
The final chain began glowing red.
Adrian shouted, "We have to stop it!"
Everyone rushed forward.
Daniel and Ethan combined their magic.
Marcus created a protective barrier.
Cameroon released golden energy toward the chain.
Abigail raised both hands.
Silver light surrounded her.
For a moment, the chain stopped moving.
Then a dark hand appeared on the other side of the gate.
Abigail screamed.
The hand slowly pushed through.
Cameroon grabbed Abigail's shoulder.
"Back!"
The gate exploded outward.
A wave of darkness threw everyone across the crypt.
When the dust cleared, the gate stood open.
A man was sitting inside.
Abigail slowly stood.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Father?"
The man lifted his head.
It was him.
Older, exhausted, but alive.
He looked directly at Abigail.
"My little moon."
Abigail ran toward him.
But before she could reach him, her father suddenly shouted:
"STOP!"
She froze.
He looked past her.
His face turned pale.
"One of your friends..."
Everyone turned toward one another.
Her father whispered:
"...is working for the Night Ravens."
The crypt fell silent.
Then the torches went out.
A familiar voice laughed in the darkness.
And Abigail realized someone had disappeared.
