Episode 6: The Awakening
Abigail opened her eyes slowly.
The first thing she saw was the ceiling of the academy infirmary. Silver stars floated across it, glowing softly like real stars in the night sky.
She tried to sit up.
"Don't."
She turned her head.
Cameroon was sitting beside the window, his arms crossed.
Abigail frowned.
"How long have I been here?"
"Three hours."
"Three hours?"
"You collapsed."
She remembered the library.
The headmistress.
The strange voice.
The silver light.
"My mother."
Cameroon became serious.
"Yes."
Abigail pushed herself upright.
"What happened after I collapsed?"
"The headmistress disappeared."
"Disappeared?"
"She escaped before the teachers arrived."
Abigail looked frightened.
"And my friends?"
"Outside."
As if they had been waiting for those exact words, the door opened.
Lydia rushed inside.
"Abigail!"
She hugged her carefully.
"I thought you were going to be unconscious forever!"
Abigail smiled weakly.
"I'm okay."
Marcus appeared behind Lydia.
"Good. Because we have a serious problem."
Daniel followed him.
"The entire academy knows what happened."
Ethan added, "And people are saying Abigail is the new Moon's heir."
Abigail sighed.
"I didn't ask for any of this."
"I know," Lydia said.
Adrian entered last.
He was carrying an ancient book.
"There is something you all need to see."
Everyone gathered around him.
Adrian opened the book to a page filled with drawings.
The first drawing showed Seraphina Wilson.
The second showed a baby wrapped in a silver blanket.
And the third showed the Moon Bell.
Abigail stared at the baby.
"That's me."
Adrian nodded.
"The records say Seraphina didn't disappear eighteen years ago."
Abigail's eyes widened.
"Then what happened?"
Adrian turned another page.
"She sacrificed her own magical power to hide you from the Night Ravens."
Silence filled the room.
Abigail's eyes filled with tears.
"She was protecting me?"
"Yes."
Cameroon stepped closer.
"Then why are they looking for Abigail now?"
Adrian pointed to the final page.
A black symbol was drawn beneath the Moon Bell.
"Because the protection spell is weakening."
A loud bell suddenly rang throughout the academy.
BOOOONG!
Every student in the corridors screamed.
The windows turned completely black.
Then a message appeared across the sky.
THE MOON'S HEIR MUST RETURN TO THE TOWER BEFORE MIDNIGHT.
Marcus stared upward.
"That's not creepy at all."
Daniel looked at Cameroon.
"What do we do?"
Cameroon looked at Abigail.
"We go to the tower."
Lydia immediately shook her head.
"Absolutely not."
Abigail stood.
"I have to."
Lydia grabbed her arm.
"You don't have to face this alone."
Abigail smiled.
"I know."
She looked at the five friends standing around her.
For the first time since arriving at Moonlight Academy, she didn't feel completely alone.
Cameroon opened the door.
"Stay close."
Abigail followed.
But as they walked toward the tower, nobody noticed the small black shadow following them.
At the top of the academy, a woman with silver eyes watched from the darkness.
She smiled.
"Come to me, Abigail."
Then the clock struck midnight.
And the Moon Bell began ringing by itself.
